I love the British ways, you folk are great, there's some really charismatic people here in the USA, but nothing like Benny Hill, Terry Gilliam, the late Douglas Adams, and so many others that can take the mundane and turn it sideways! I've changed basket designs also and get a variety of temps depending on the air flow thru the pellets and how the air is introduced to the gases. The idea is to get the temp you're looking for while using the least amount of fuel, like you stated. And also making the stove run all day ( and night) without having the flame back up into the hopper feed ( happened once when I first started my research prototype. I've since switched from using the stainless bar design (which did work alright) to the design I found on the Riley pellet burner that you can add to your camping cylinder stove. It's seems to work better and easier to control the temperature by just introducing more or less air to your burn tube. If you add more air, it slows down the draft sucking thru the burner, which cools the stove down a little ( had to experiment with just how much air) and if you close the air inlet, it makes the draft more powerful and runs a lot hotter (sometimes too hot!!) So you will need to do your research and experiment a bit. Such a simple design puts out such a mass amount of heat. I don't even think about buying a commercially made pellet stove with all the electronics and motors involved. Too much can go wrong at such a high price. Once this idea is perfected (there are already 3 different models out there already) I think the electric pellet stove will lose its popularity.

David I have watched a lot of videos on rocket stoves, and I have to say I just love the simplicity of your design. So much less bulky than the ones with a burn chamber rising up into an inverted drum. Your design is a real space saver. I do have a couple of questions: 1. Is the distance between the opening at the bottom with the bucket underneath, and the far end of the horizontal feeder tube 700mm in total? 2. Have you done any trials feeding sticks or small logs into the fire rather than pellets? That would probably remove the need for a grill at the bottom. I imagine your design would be incredibly cheap to build. Bravo!

Hello, David. Was wondering if I left a air gap under exhaust leg, but still left attached, would it still provide a clean burn? Help lower stack tempature. Tempature reaching over 1000 degree F. Used 4"x4" X1/4" tubingon lower tube. Installed a hopper similar to the one on Wise Way stoves. Love your design, spot on.

very neat. i've just made a basic rocket stove with a return from the upper mid point on the exhaust to bring hot air tback to where the wood is.. though its just a stove and this is what i was more thinking. can you please go into more depth on the explanation of how it all works. i appologize i am new to this concept. i was planning on using an old air tank with a 3 in gap but this is better it seems. thank you~ Ryan from US, north carolina

Hi David, you mention that the gap in your primary grate is 4mm, and the secondary is 20mm. Could you explain a little further? Would you not want the secondary grate to be smaller gap so as to allow the pellets to break down further? Would a 20mm gap simply not catch the pellets? Thanks!

Sorry David I just rewatched for the 3rd time and realize you meant there’s a 20mm “drop” down to the secondary combustion chamber. I’m assuming there’s a grate between the secondary combustion chamber and the ash pan, if so what is the gap in that grate?

David S so 4mm top grate and 6mm for the bottom? I saw one of your videos measuring the gap on your grate with calipers and you measured 6 - 6.5 mm, but I’m not sure if that video was before or after the one you made saying 4mm.

I just completed one that is almost identical you your design with dimensions converted to inches. I added a ash box below the burn chamber which has a door. I fired it up today using small soft wood scraps from wood working. The flame is following the path of least resistance and going up the feed tube rather that horizontally through the reburn loop. I am not getting the rocket effect and there is a good bit of smoke, fortunately, I tried it in the open rather than inside. There is little draw through the fire basket. I am in SC in the US and finally located a Tractor supply that carries wood pellets and will try those hopefully tomorrow. What else am I missing. I previously built two basic rocket stoves but loved the concept of the rocket stove heater for my shop. Would I be better off with the feed tube on an angle rather than vertical and right above the burn chamber? Thanks for your help.

David, I wanted to thank you for your response to my question about the smoke coming from the feed tube. That was the answer to the problem in part. I now have 15 feet of chimney which works great once the burn is hot. I did some research about how chimneys draft and chimney sizes which also helped a lot. I do have a follow up question along the same line. What is the best way to get the fire started without getting having smoke fill my shop before it starts to draft. I have been using a propane torch to get the fire started. I am working on making the baskets to your specs for pellets. So far I have only been able to get a bag of hardwood cooking pellets. What works best so far is burning wood scraps and using an expanded steel grate formed to fit under the feed tube. And suggestions welcomed.

@@timsears4385 i now use it regulary in the colder months. It burns best with pellets. I have been buying them from Tractor Sply. The soft wood pellets used for animal stable bedding burns great. I also made a tapered pellet holder that is inserted down the feed tube with the narrow end just above the ash drop which allows for good air flow. I use some kind of kindling under the pellet holder to get the fire going. I personally use a propane torch to light the kindling. To prevent the flame from coming up the feed tube I fill it at least halfway up to force the flame to travel horizontally untill the unit begins to draw. I also made a cap with thermal insulation like rock wool for the feed tube. Tempertures in the burn chamber can run in excess of 800 degrees F. When the feed tube starts running out of fuel it will start letting smoke escape which can be controlled with the aforementioned cap which may need to be weighted down. Also i have used clean wood chips but find they tend to get stuck and need to be pushed down or poked with a heavy duty wire rod from time to time. Proper length of chimney is important as well to get proper draw. The whole thing is a learning experience but produces goid heat for my 2 car uninsulated garage shop. Hope this helps.

hey david, love the easy to build stove. i own a sawmill and am looking for a design that will burn chip from mixed scrap waste... like softwood slabs, limbs, end cuts, sawdust... anything that makes it to the chipper.. and of course it will most likely be largely green debris.. i think 4" tube will not be large enough to prevent jambs of the flow of material coming out of the chipper even tho it is fairly small it is nowhere near as small as pellets. so if im correct all measurements would have to be increased .. for example .. if i went to 6 in tube.. all measurements would have to be increased by 50%. and have you ever tried to run it on standard chipper mulch... if so what kind of issues did you run into ?
