Love Larkin Poe. This girl has a gift for what she does. A lot of people can “play” an instrument, but very few can play with soul!

I want to thank you Megan for such a useful series of videos. I've watched all of them. I was very confused when I started to play lap steel as self-taught, but then you taught how to find our pathway, and that's much more than notes on the lap steel. I encourage you to keep giving piece of advice, because those are priceless for us. We need them! Ps: I was lucky enough to see your opening act for Mississippi All Stars in Rome, Italy. It was amazing. THANKS AGAIN MEGAN & REBECCA! ❤

I am so happy I found your lessons. I have a big advantage over a many who are new to lap steel - lots of slide guitar (regular guitar) in different tunings. I think your advice about learning by ear is crucial to developing your own style and truly expressing yourself.

Learing how to learn is probably the best skill someone can teach. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this, Megan. Watching YT Videos on how others did cover a song is also a great inspiration to me. Then adapting those covers to my own style and abilities.

Hi Megan, I am a 71 year old dobro player who recently switched to lap steel. I started playing about the time you were born, but still consider myself a beginner. My heroes are Jerry Douglas, Mike Auldridge. Cindy Cashdollar, Josh Graves and Carlos Santana. At the top of that list is now Megan Lovell. Wow. You are amazing! I hope you will continue doing the DIY series. If you do could you consider doing a video on Sam Cooke's Bring It on Home and The Peter Gunn theme? BTW I have never written a comment to any other musician. Thanks, Zee

I bet it's handy to have perfect pitch and I'd bet both Lovell sisters have it. I don't feel left out that I don't have it as much as I feel grateful that they do and they use it so well.

perfect pitch is pretty rare but you get good in time. it won't be perfect but it will be more than close enough. good luck.
@BlitzsieLDiscoLSnow

To be honest, perfect pitch is nice and all, but slightly overrated. With enough practice you can hear whether a note sounds the same as another, no perfect pitch involved. Just like you can start to hear when people are singing/playing out of tune. I don't have perfect pitch, and my learning by ear could use some work, but during my classical clarinet and music theory lessons I did learn how to judge note distances, relative pitch. Which is more important in music than perfect pitch. Most orchestra's tune their instruments to 440 or 442 hertz, while other, more olden-style musicians may go for 432 hertz. Perfect pitch won't help you in deciphering the notes more easily, but relative pitch will tell you whether the note is a whole, a half, or more steps differing from the previous note. Then all you need to do is figure out the first note through trial and error, and voila!

I hope a lot of guitar players see this. I discovered a "miracle." I read an article that interviewed Derek Trucks. He mentioned that he used a "PYREX SLIDE" I got myself one and it enabled me to play slide. The weight of the pyrex slide was just enough to work well with a standard .10 string gauge, and it's easy to play a lot of cool things on slide with standard tuning

Hi Megan, so my frustration as a beginner lapsteel player is the left hand technique: 1) holding onto the slide (i have a slide like yours and sometimes I feel like the slide is going to go flying out of my hand at any moment!) 2) muting strings particularly when playing individual notes - I have a hard time keeping the previous string I plucked from ringing out - AHHHHHH! Having said all of that, It's a blast to play especially when I have little victories :-) Oh yeah, your Larkin Poe music is pretty cool - well done!

Hey Megan, glad to see another DIY SLIDE video. I've been playin' drums for about 15 years, actually I play hard rock and progressive, but i approached guitar and bass though my brother and band mates and last year I bought a lap steel, i was really curious and it's been love at first sight. As you said in the video, youtube is an encyclopedia of things, if you can search in the right way and I'm having lot of fun learning to play the lap steel. Thank you for the video. Rock on Greetings from Italy

" Apache", of course, is best known - world wide -by the UK group The Shadows and, interestingly, I've always thought that Hank Marven - their lead guitarist - must have been influenced by lap steel guitarists . Back in the UK in the 50s there were still a number of groups playing Hawaiian music, and one particular lap steel player, Dutchman Wout Steenhuis, was featured a lot on UK radio.

Thanks Megan for sharing your lap steel knowledge! I tried to participate in the challenge you launched. With the challenge you have an extra motivation to practice. As a beginner to lap steel I am a little bit disoriented due to the many variables involved: tunings, steel bars, playing with picks or not, stopping unused strings, and many other issues(slants, bendings)... and yes, playing in tune :-)

Megan, your insights into learning on the lap steel are really quite intriguing. I have pretty much the same approach when teaching myself something new on acoustic guitar. I used to exclusively follow tabs, and still do to an extent for more complex pieces, solos, or when I can't figure something out by ear. Generally, when tackling a new song I'll try to learn it by ear, at the same time I'll check out a bunch of KZitem videos (i.e. tutorials, various cover versions) to get inspired. Once I've run through the gamut, I like to break a song down into parts, and then add my own embellishments and try to make it my own interpretation. Very cool stuff, thank you for sharing your process! I think I may still have a couple of guitar tutorial DVDs lying around somewhere myself collecting dust! 😆🤘

Wonderful advice, just learning the instrument, (3 months now),staying in open E for now while I get the hang. I love your learn by ear and make it your own advice. Then your not spending all of your time trying to determine the tuning or follow some pro musician's lead. I picked the lap steel up to be able to add to collaborations this wonderful instrument voice. At first I was trying to play the whole song like I would a rhythm on the guitar. But then I realized I could just add little "comments", with the lap steel and that helped me at least not ruin the song for the rest of the band lol. If you get a chance see how I did Tequila sunrise

Just out of interest, Apache was written by Jerry Lordan who also wrote Wonderful Land which were both massive hits for The Shadows back in the early 60s. Jerry also had a big hit himself with Who could be bluer and this was the first 45 that I ever bought. The second was Mess of Blues by Elvis which had a B side of Girl of My Best Friend. Coming back up to date, I think Megan is a pure gem.
