Uh Oh - All is not well in the land of Mavic. In part 2 (Here's part 1: • DJI Mavic 3 - 7X 4K Sa... ) of our zoom review, we explore questions raised with our first review and discover significant issues that make the 7X telephoto camera unusable during some key settings.
With the new DJI Mavic 3 released, we have anxiously been awaiting it's arrival on our doorstep. So, here's part 2, answering the question, "How good's the 7X telephoto lens?"
Second impressions - the 7X focal distance gives the drone a tremendous reach and its remarkable in a variety of settings - opening up possibilities that were not possible on a drone of this size before. The footage is silky smooth and has a very cinematic feel. But there are some cons too - some big problem cons. Though the footage is technically 4K, it's pretty soft, especially compared to the down sampled 4K from the main camera which is tac sharp. There are other significant limitations 7X camera - most notably the absence of most of the app functionality (only auto, no subject tracking) as well as only 30p video and no ability to shoot RAW stills - just JPEGS. Add to this, what I hope is a problem in the production of our specific drone (and not an issue with the whole Mavic 3 line) - namely what appears to be a misalignment of lens elements that makes for horrible, unusable sunrise and sunset footage. Part 3 (and a replacement Mavic 3) are coming later this week to help us answer that question for sure.
After part 2 of our review, what do you think? Is the 7X zoom in the DJI Mavic 3 is just a gimmick, or a useful tool in your film-making toolbox. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
