Handbooks for the Asian standard issue bench lathes often leave out an important lubrication point. These lathes have a separate lead screw and drive rod for the apron. The drive rod passes through a keyed worm on the back of the apron. This worm drives the gear for the auto feeds. Every month you should reach behind the apron and smear grease on the worm and it's mating gear. It's important to remember that an air hose is not your lathe's friend. It will blow chips and swarf on to all the exposed gears on a lathe, no matter where they are. These chips get into the oil and especially grease and wedge themselves into the gears. This can get so bad that it will break gear teeth. Open quick change gear boxes are bad to have this happen as the gears are usually out of sight/out of mind and close to the chip pan where compressed air will bounce the chips into the gears. Cheers from NC/USA

Hope the Lurgy moves on soon. My preferred oil for slideways, and slow moving items is Shell Tonna T68 ( M2 or M3), the "T" refers to added tackifier, ref resists washing away by coolant. Other grades are available to suit colder or warmer climates, ref ISO 32 or 220, the 220 is good for vertical slideways. Obviously there are plenty of alternatives. Great vlog, thanks for sharing.

Engine oil probably isn't the best lube for machinery, because it is formulated to operate at very high temperatures, using it is better than nothing but it's not as good as fine machine oil available at most engineering suppliers.

No! Engine oil has detergents to clean the carbonated particles in the combustion engine. You cannot use for your lathe. Use ISO 32 or 68 oil.

Over winter I've wrapped a cloth sheet round the whole lathe to prevent airflow and fresh condensation on the cold metal, helps a lot was well as oiling of course.

Thank you for your fantastic video and it helped me to complete a nearly full oiling up. I say nearly as I have a later ME10 than you cna I have a back gear with an oiling hole covered by a allen set screw. I have yet to find the right size Allen key to be also to complete the oiling. Kind regards

Good video as learned of one Boxford oiler that was new to me....oops! I find the magnetic scarf pick up easier to clean if I use some cling film on the magnet. Thanks for the videos.

Hi Alan I do not seem to have success using an oil gun such as yours. The never seems to penetrate the valve. Is there a trick i do not know? John

You use the nozzle to push the ball bearing in which opens the seal then pump the oil in

Your videos have been very helpful, not much info on the older boxfords. I have an early csb with the sliding motor mount. Pardon the inuendo but mine have nipples that stand proud, do you know what type of tip is needed to oil them?

In not sure but. It sounds like an oil gun like a grease gun but pumps oil

@@enotsengineering yup you are right, been looking through videos and found one explaining how to adapt a grease gun to take oil. Hope your feeling better :-)
