What's interesting about this scene, is this is the most respect he has ever shown to one of his subordinates. A leader needs mental toughness and the ability to choose and make a decision without wavering. Even if hes being put under great pressure to change his mind. I don’t have data on how many officers and non-commissioned were fragged while serving in Vietnam, but my captain, top kick, and I were almost killed by some pot head members of my platoon when the top-kick decided to have a full boot inspection because some off the wall brigadier officer was going to walk through our camp. That night one of the soldiers threw a grenade onto the top of the cliff-side hooch which housed the captain and top-kick, (my hooch was next to theirs). Fortunately, for us, the grenade bounced off the top and landed in the downhill protective trenches. My young platoon sergeant apologized for the incident created by one of his platoon members (I never asked him who out of respect for his honesty) as they liked me, but they were upset over the ridiculous inspection when all they wanted after being out on the dusty road all day long was to rest and recuperate for the next day and not to placate some tin-starred officer. Discipline had already become a real problem by late ‘67/‘68 in the ranks due to drugs being used by our soldiers and the ridiculous containment war strategy of our armchair government leaders. All of a sudden this official looking guy storms into our barracks screaming his friggen head off calling us every name in the book. He preceded to pick up one of the trash cans and dropped kicked it!!, This trash can was galvanized steel , just like the one in the clip. I remember it clearly, he terrified us all.
