145°F is *definitely not* medium-rare beef! It's medium-well! I'm actually looking at Kenji Lopez-Alt's sous vide burger temperature chart now and he actually says 145-155°F is well-done! I personally find his numbers a little low. However, that's sous vide and this is high heat cooking at 446°F. If the center is 145°F when you take it off, you're looking at a final temperature after resting of about 155°F at the center and even more well done near the crust. Clearly well-done. I can't like this video when the chef doesn't know what medium-rare is. And I don't even like my burgers medium-rare! I did my last sous vide burger to 138°F. The border of medium and medium-well. Cooking ground beef to 145°F may be around as low as is safe with high heat cooking, it's kind of pushing the limits there, but it's not medium-rare beef. As anyone who has ever measured a steak would tell you. 145°F is medium-well beef! Good for burgers, perhaps ideal, but it is *not* medium-rare! These terms have meanings. Look at temperature charts. 145°F is never given as the temperature for medium-rare beef. Yeesh.

I'd say if you're stuck in a place where you can't really grill (I'm in an apartment with no terrace) and can get it for the right price, it'd pretty damn good. Pretty easy cleanup, though I've got a few specks on the side which are extremely resistant to scrubbing off.

Here's my experience with indoor grills. You can either have one with fierce heat, which is going to give you good results, but will also fill your kitchen with all the smoke and smells of grilling, or you can have a "smokeless" grill, which means they keep the heat low. No smoke, but subpar results. I don't think it's possible to have both.
@AlanMolstad
2 жыл бұрын
Ok,,,,ummm>>> I got to share something with you about how a person can get some great meats grilled, and not have any smoke. First...here at my house we mostly only use this same indoor grill to grill steak, and many of them are very thick. and frankly, this grill is far better than any other way to grill meats .....including anything you do outside. I think what is key is that the meat drips dont fall on anything that is hot...and thus you get a far better grilling experience. 2nd...I live in northern North Dakota, and for about 6 months of the year its not safe to be outside standing around cooking, so this indoor grill is perfect. 3rd.....I think that with this design you actually do have high heat temps, and little to no smoke. Remember the idea is to be "smokeless.. = ..smoke-less". The only smoke you see with this grill is from the meat itself, and its not from the most common source of smoke being the drips that might land on hot coals or some type of heated burner. 4th....I wish the price was lower...I wish that so that guys who are not sure about this grill would have a chance to get it and see that what guys like me are saying about it are true. I wish you well my friend. If you have any questions, just ask!

We had some thick pork chops the other week for a couple of meals. The first time my wife made them just on the stove in a pan ,.....what a let down! Then the next time we had the same type of pork chops I got the indoor grill going...The difference is like night and day! The meat was so good that I had to tell my wife- "You out did yourself again!" Meats made on this type of grill are way, way better than just dropping the slab of meat into a hot pan on the stove.

The instructions states that you need to pre-heat the grill at least 10-12 minutes... If you have done so, you will hear the sizzling of the food when you place them on the grates. The product also claims that fatter foods will still smoke but not as much as a traditional grill. This is a great electric IR grill. You did not follow instructions to get the best results.
@andymill8552
5 жыл бұрын
Suggestion: Do your homework (read the instructions). Make a new video, retest and pre-heat this time. Every other KZitem test I have seen for this grill clearly shows that it sizzles and has perfect grill marks. Also the grill is not advertised as 'smokeless' but as 'smoke-less'. (subtle difference) The latter means 'less smoke' and not 'no smoke'. So many errors in this video.

The grill works perfectly. So well in fact that I picked up a second one. They definitely sizzle if you let the grill heat up long enough. I have this grill because my apartment's stove vent is up so high on the ceiling that my fire alarm goes off if I try to pan-sear a steak. This lets me grill anything I want without the fear of terrorizing my neighbors with the smoke alarm. I've cooked shrimp, salmon, chicken, burgers, steaks, asparagus, corn on the cob, potatoes, and it's all turned out fabulously tasty! Sure, if you have a sweet BBQ grill on a deck in your backyard, there is no reason to have this, but if you live in an apartment and you love to grill food, there is absolutely nothing better.

I have this and this cooks my steak very well. There is a reason why she did not hear that sizzle....as with any grill, the key is to let it PREHEAT. With this do it for about 10 mins or more. When you put your steak on the grill you will hear that sizzle and grill it as you always do. Steak comes out as if you were cooking on your outdoor grill. I use this during the winter time or when I just don't feel like using the outdoor grill.

Couple of things.. 1) I own this grill.. it says let the grill preheat for at least 10 minutes before putting your food on.. I can assure you she didnt wait for the grill properly preheat first.. hence why there was no initial sizzling.. and ultimately why no great grill Marks either. With that being said.. it does seem to take longer than it typically would using another means of grilling. 2) she said "her cooks" indicating she may own a restaurant or something... so you'd think she'd know to let the grill preheat.. but man did she look like a fish out of water trying to handle the tongs... Having said that, I am not trying to imply this grill is any good. I am seeing a lot of it being listed on ebay as certified refurbished - a clear sign this unit has some quality issues or does not function as expected. Also, there is a very similar unit made by Tenergy, even pictures are almost identical and it sells for less. Not sure who stole the idea from who. Likely, they have a very similar build and quality.

Infrared radiation isn't ultraviolet radiation. The eyes and skin doesn't have sensors that inform the brain about intense ultraviolet radiation. That's why ultraviolet is so dangerous when you like directly at the sun or when you are sunbathing without sunscreen. When you start feel pain from ultraviolet radiation it's too late. However infrared is relatively safe. The eyes and skin can detect it easily and can be avoided instantly before any irreversible damage to eyes and skin.

Next time will use only dry seasoning. Salmon filet was very good. But I had to cover with large led due to oil from fish was all over.

Some of the comments about this review are profoundly naive. An average residential gas stove in the US puts out 7000 btu. An electric grill, particularly this one, is rated at 1500 watts. Which converts to a bit over 5000 btu per hour. You’ll *never* get the grill marks you can with a good griddle. Having said that some have claimed that as she is a chef and owns her own restaurant she knows what she’s doing. Well no. Her reviews are awful in general. She holds her hand at least six inches from the surface and claims it’s not hot until she actually takes the temp. This Philips IR grill focuses the heat on the surface. It tells you this on the manual. I would also point out *most* celebrity chefs have agents. It’s mostly a marketing game now. Jamie Oliver has (had) many restaurants and can’t make fried rice. Rachel Ray didn’t know what she’s talking about when she made carnitas.

Nothing will replace a BBQ but this is great for winter “grilling” and I have a kitchen in a house that for some stupid reason doesn’t have an exhaust pipe for the range fan/vent over the stove.... we have exhaust pipes that go through the ceiling and the roof for the vent fans in our bathrooms and laundry room but not over the friggin’ stove!!! 😡 Anyways, I just picked up a used one for $20. I think it’ll be worth it 😎

It's a smoke-less grill. Not a smokeless grill. Therefore, some smoke should be expected. By the way, Costco has this exact unit right now (Oct 4, 2020) for $99.

Eater... If it wasn't for your brand, I would almost think this an AD as I flipped through it. Wear a nice blazer in the kitchen everyone. A New one. Let's Have a real indoor grill shootout review. Top 3, done correctly.

She is not host material LOL why do you guys bring in these random ppl who don't know what they are doing? And expect good results?? Didn't even let the grill preheat... Pretty sure I remember these products aren't actually "smokeless" they are more like smoke-less its says so in the box and such if you actually show it. Bad reviews yo~

I'm surprised that this thing was $300. Should be under $100 by now since this was made over a year ago. However, you can get an indoor electric grill for waaaay cheaper than that. Might as well use the Foreman or a knockoff to get the same result.

I have this grill and loveee it. Its the only large appliance that stays on my counter. You didn't preheat it for 10 min because i get very nice grill marks. And you hear the sizzle, no sizzle on yours.The chicken was dry on the ends because just like an outdoor grill you, when cooking thick chicken breasts, its better to slightly pound the meat on the large side to level it out for the same width. Sorry, your not very good at cooking, those burgers looked horrible not because of the grill, but the cook. Steak is unbelievable on this grill too. Preheat the grill for at least 10 min. A shame some ppl in the comments said they are happy they seen this video because they were about to order because of someone who looks like they set this grill up for failure because they can't cook or read directions. I love mine .

You have to be objective when reviewing things like this. This isn't supposed to be a "grill killer" or replacement. It's a narrow market. To me this thing is a fairly neat idea as my lease says I cant have an exposed flame grill. I can buy this and it's fine and I could buy an even more expensive electric flameless grill...

Eater by far your weakest channel. I like the host personality, but the testing for every gadget is terrible. Please stop. You are misinforming people by testing poorly.look at America test kitchen for how you should test things.

It didn’t smoke it steamed.She saw steam. It couldn’t smoke with out a fire,unless it was burning. At the end of the video she said it didn’t smoke but, if you start watching at 4:38, She said that it did smoke.😑🤷🏼♀️

seems like she just plopped it down without preheating the grill...even a real outdoor grill needs preheating...even a frying pan...i've seen others test this after pre-heating, and they get great sizzle when they first put on their meat

I can't believe you put the meat in cold iron and say "there's no sizzling sound". Everybody knows to preheat your pan before put the meat. I will never watch this show again

People that eat ground beef, hamburgers that is undercooked are really asking for it and not sure why. If you want bloody then eat steaks, hamburgers are somewhat dangerous cooked like this gal did. So what if you get by with it for years, its that one time that will get you.

How about spend $30 and send your ass outside and grill, Philips can barely dig themselves out of the hole and they're trying to tap into the BBQ business.

I don’t get Americans obsession with rare burgers! You can eat beef rare because bacteria doesn’t penetrate the muscle the way it does for chicken. If you grind up that meat, unless it was handled from the get go to be used for tartar, it needs to be cooked through!!! It’s so disgusting.

Your burgers were a little thick so you might have needed more preheat time, maybe 10 minutes?
@trashpanda5947

AFAIK a big reason for the flavor of grilled food comes from the fact that fat and meat juices drop down on the coal, burns and then evaporates as smoke. That smoke then affects the taste of the meat. A smokeless grill seems like an oxymoron to me.
