I bought the 120 set a year or so ago. I’m fine with that! I’ve learned through my years of pencil buying…do your self a favor..you won’t ever find a set of pencils that are like prisma except prisma. The same with the rest of higher end pencils. @@danettetrostle7173 You know what's funny? I have the original Berol Prismacolor pencils (well other than colors now gone) and saved up for new sets. I got a few other prisma sets (from art stores) and was so disappointed in their performance, that is what got me looking for alternatives! 😆 I have almost every set of artist pencils from every top company- both regular and watercolor. We had a very high end art store close so I got most of them at 75% off or more at the time. I have had unusual opportunities to get many off brand sets also to compare with. Prisma are good in some situations on some paper but others are better where prisma isn't. Plus to be honest, I don't care how expensive the pencils there seem to be better batch runs than others in most lines of pencils. So you did fine in your quest for pencils! But I've had Prismas forever (although never the whole set) and just started with the smallest of Polychromos. I live close enough to stores that sell open stock. I got the 120 Bruts and the Kalour Macarons during the last Amazon day sell and quite honestly the few good ones did not make the purchase worth it. lol I cringe at the fact I could have better spent that $$ on rounding out my Prismas or adding Polychromos. I have a very large pencil collection. As in HUGE. I probably have 12 sets of Kalour and several sets of Brut. Interestingly, a few of the Kalour sets and one of the Brut are really great quality- so different I had to keep checking to see if I mixed them up. Yet, other sets are not great-even some of the exact colors. I have 2 sets of Brut macrons. The first set was wonderful. The 2nd set is awful. Same company. Totally different experience. The Kalour sets in cases that are newer have 2 collections with great quality. Similar to Prismacolor. The others not so much. Kristy Partride has a great video on using crummy cheaper pencils on sanded paper iirc. She uses some kind of blending medium. Great way to use up meh pencils.

I had the 240 set originally. I MATCHED those 240 colors EXACTLY to the first 240 of the 520. I *assume* that 241-300 from the 300 set match to the 520. Assuming all is true, the last 220 colors of 520 are "brand new" (outside of any pastel from Macaron set that changed color names/numbers). As for Brutfuners, the squares I loved, the 520 I did NOT. That set contained different pencils in their line, like the 180? I swear the squares were a different "line", acted more buttery than the 520. So I am pro Kalour 520, pro Brutfuner squares, against Brutfuner 520

Pablos are lovely and have some unique colours. They play very well with Polys. They layer forever. You can't smush them together like Prismas, you need to use a build up of light layers. I have the 520 set as well as 8 other Kalour sets (probably more than that)big and small. Honestly, some of the sets were scratchier than others speaking of the same exact colors being different per set. My set of 520 is surprisingly creamy for the most part compared to other pencils I have used. For reference, I have almost every set in colored pencils (as in multiple collections from each brand) from Caran D'ache, Derwent, Berol/Prismacolor, etc from high end to lower collections in each brand. I have about 4000 colored pencils give or take some. This set is what I call middle of the road. It is great for most coloring and hobby level artwork. The Kalour blender is excellent btw and blends well. The performance is not top of the line but on the upper end of hobby/beginner quality. The colors are pretty and enjoyable to work with (with a few exceptions). Kalour has consistency issues so one box may be amazing, and the next one not so much. I think this is a good deal since dupes mean you don't have to lament no single colors available yet. As for artwork, I go with high end pencils. For color fix of joy, these are great depending on paper used as with any pencil. I keep mine in a huge page case with each page zipping out. I put the metallics in another case since I use them less. As I organized by chart, I put them in right spots in the case.

I like to use pencils on black paper or on top of watercolors. This calls for opacity, and although I have only tried a couple types of cheaper pencils (Staedtler, Castle Arts), it was immediately apparent that they would not be suitable. As if the secret to why I have so many WIPs right now is the lack of the exactly perfect color I can't find in one of the other sets or couldn't make with a blend from the different sets. lol. I think this is why I keep not getting my first set of watercolors... the fact it's a new rabbit hole of "sets." This will help me remove the 520 Kalour set from my cart instead of just moving it to "later" every time I go in to buy something.

So true what you said here. But I wish someone would make an ASMR video of fun or quiet talking while messing around with one of the giant sets. Stacking all of the trays up and measuring the height, putting all the trays out on a big table just to see all the color, moving the pencils and the trays around to get all the yellows in one spot, blue on another, and then laying them all out and step back to look at the rainbowie goodness, scribbling on different paper types, but not really coloring a picture. Just focusing on the sheer mass of what would feel like infinite pencils, while showing off individual pencils that are pretty pinks, rarely seen greenie-yellows, unusual purplie-browns, and comment about 'this one would be great for skin,' and 'this one would make a good color for a squirrel' and go through while showing the odd or different than usual pencils up close. And showing some of the ones that have unusual names, or color names that are just way off the mark, such as 'friendly purple' only it's not got a bit of purple and is really an aqua blue. Yeah, odd idea maybe, but I'd like it because I want to live vicariously through the eyes of someone who owns this huge set. And all that I wrote is the sort of weird stuff I'd do with a giant set of pencils like this 520.

He one are actually fun as a base under colour that shines through as highlight, I learned that from a colorist, I think it might have been Jennifer Stay, on here with highlighters so I tried it with coloured pencils and pens, I like the effect very much, so it's all very much personal preference in colour. I like just looking at a lot of coloured pencils, markers, pens, paints etc... I find it inspiring, but many prefer to keep their pencils etc in storage boxes and find etc.. Again it's personal preference, there's a saying about one man's meat is another man's poison, well it's the same with colour, I have high end pencils, but I would put prism a midrange, and not all that exciting as they break and the wood splits ever since they let the quality slide. I like the motor pencils for myself and if I do work for sale I use my Faber Castel and Caron dAche or even my Derwent ink intense... But I do enjoy the challenges each brand brings to the art table. I don't have the Kalour 520, only the 300 - but the yellow 520 Brutfuner's are terrible quality - lots of scratchy ones and smaller cores. Also only numbered no color names. I would use the 300 Kalour over the yellow box 520 Brutfuner. I definitely don't see a reason to buy a 520 set after buying the yellow 520 Brutfuner and even the 300 Kalour. How do these compare to the Brutfuner and the Fellissimo 520 sets? Same cores in all 3?

I did talk about the Brutfuner. Felissimo sets I didn’t mention simply because that’s $900 to purchase those and not really worth it. That said, no, they aren’t the same cores. They are very different pencils among all three. As I mentioned in this video, however, I don’t recommend these over Brutfuners set.

I think if you really want the Kalour, the 300 is a good enough amount. Like, 520 colored pencils? That's WAY TOO MANY. Edit: You said these exact words in the video. 😅

Is the separate metallic tin that you can buy the exact same metallic pencils that are in this 520 set? Or does the separate metallic set have additional metallics?

They have some overlap BUT names and numbers are different.

These pencils are horrible I returned them immediately and just reordered my set of the 150 Prisma. Prisma is the best hands down!!! I will never fall for a budget pencil I cant hold in my hand and try it before I buy it!!! Sorry to all who have wasted there money, these pencils are best for kids!!!!

I love PRisma. I still call Prisma a great "budget" pencil. Also, I LOVE your name lol

Yes I like my brutfuner much better than Kalour I only have the 240 Kalour but hate them their color is dull and you get a huge wax built up

Yes, the filler builds up too much for me, so I can't get much out of a skin tone.
