Dr. Karin shares her natural remedies for muscle cramps, charley horses and or muscle spasms.
Muscle cramps are often due to imbalances in electrolytes, like Calcium, Potassium, and Magnesium.
A particular muscle may be deficient because it used up the electrolytes faster than the body could provide replenishments. When a muscle is in a chronic spastic state, it partially occludes blood flow in, impairing the replenishment of nutrients in, and partially occludes the drainage of the waste, so the metabolic waste remains too long in the muscle, festering and causing pain.
Can you see how this can lead to an imbalance of electrolytes. This imbalance can lead to trigger points and muscle cramps.
How? Basically put, the fibers in the muscles need electrolytes to be able to slide along each other during the contraction. Morbidly put, this is why rigor mortis sets in when a person dies. The fibers literally lock up together and the body gets stiff.
Before trying any remedy from any website (including this one), check with you chiropractor to make sure it is appropriate for your specific condition.
QUICK FIX FOR MUSCLE CRAMPS
Often drinking a tall glass of water with a pinch of sea salt will cause immediate relief from muscle cramps. Why sea salt? Because table salt is just NaCl and filler (sodium). We need a balance of electrolytes, so just drinking sodium is not enough. Sea salt has calcium, magnesium, potassium and other electrolytes we need. You can through in honey and lemon for taste, to make your own sports drink. Most sport drinks are corn syrup and table salt... how is that healthy?
If you have spastic muscles, you can try a natural muscle relaxer:
Homeopathic muscle relaxer
Looking for a natural muscle relaxer? Formula 303 is a natural muscle relaxer that takes the edge off muscle spasms without causing drowsiness. It contains both Valerian Root and Kava Kava. It is also a great tension headache treatment.
Therapeutic Oils That May Help
Before using any topical therapeutic oil, check with your health care provider to verify it is appropriate for you to try, and do a spot test to make sure your skin will not negatively react to the essential oil.
Essential Oil of Peppermint for Muscle Aches
Essential oil of peppermint is good for tense muscles. It has a nice cooling effect, which also helps diminish muscle aches. Massage three to four drops of peppermint oil into the area of pain.
Essential Oil of Clove for Muscle Spasm
Essential oil of clove is also good for muscle spasm. Clove has a nice warming effect, which helps relax tense muscles. Massage three to four drops of clove oil into the neck and upper back.
Essential Oil of Lavender for Relaxation
Essential oil of lavender is a calming oil. Massage three to four drops of lavender oil into the chest. Combine this with some deep-breathing techniques, and feel your stress melt away.
Essential Oil of Marjoram for Increased Blood Flow
Essential oil of marjoram opens up blood flow, which helps facilitate healing and relaxes muscle spasms. Massage three drops into the area of the body where you are experiencing the most tension (the front pectoral muscles, the upper back muscles, and/or the shoulders).
Again, before trying anything from any video or research, talk with your healthcare provider to make sure it is appropriate for your specific condition, and hopefully that is one of us here at Drummond Chiropractic.
