This episode really shows how great Matt Smith is as the Doctor. So many people were worried that he was too young (myself included when I saw the first photo) but when he's talking to Amy he really seems like a tired, old man. The Doctor is usually so bright and active, but I love moments like this where we see his real age coming through

I suddenly remember, Little Amelia line in the first episode, when the doctor told her, he will be back in 5 minutes, and she says, in a very sad voice, "Everybody always says that". Oh boy, that line suddenly got a lot a weight behind it, because I'm pretty sure, that was what her parents told her before being suck in by the space crack.

The fairytale of Amy Pond! No really, It was a fairytale. about a girl, travelling with her imaginary friend, falling in love with a boy who waits 2000 years for her and never growing up. series 5(and also series 6) was a modern fairy tale and it worked perfectly in doctor who. because doctor who itself is a fairytale. as great Neil Gaiman once said: "Doctor Who has never pretended to be hard science fiction … At best Doctor Who is a fairytale, with fairytale logic about this wonderful man in this big blue box who at the beginning of every story lands somewhere where there is a problem."

+WolfGratz I think he's mostly right about his own favorite doctor(second doctor). Patrick Troughton's era was really fairy tale-ish(he even met with fairy tale characters like Rapunzel). of course I agree doctor who has been many things in last 50 years, from hard sci-fi to spy thriller and romantic drama and many other things, but in its core, when you think about it, the idea of an old caird man with a magic box travelling around the world and picking up young girls to show them the wonders of universe, at least on paper is a fairytale.

@anonymes2884

+Liam Catterson It's a beautiful moment and the great thing is, after you've seen the end of the episode you can rewatch the scene and _also_ see the other level of the wiley old Doctor basically writing himself into her subconscious so years later she can bring him back. Which is also, to me, an allegory for how the Big Finish audio dramas and the various stories and novels kept the Who flame burning from '89 to 2005 - when the universe didn't have room for him anymore he literally survived in words. Then there're the additional undertones about the wonders of childhood and staying in touch with the person we were, even as we grow and change. Epic, multilayered series arc.
@aureliaansah1462
7 жыл бұрын
+Anon Ymes Yes! I love that he was "writing himself into her subconscious". That scene, as well as the scene where Amy remembers him, are my favourites. (As well as the children mimicking his alien dance moves :D) Do Americans know the wedding saying, "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue"? Knowing it makes those scenes even more goosebumpy!
@anonymes2884
7 жыл бұрын
+Aurelia Ansah Good question, it hadn't actually occurred to me that in the US they may not have that old "wedding...thing" as Rory puts it, definitely makes it a more resonant moment, agreed (i've a feeling they do because i'm sure i've seen it in films and TV shows). And yep, the whole episode has great moments dotted throughout but Amy remembering is near the top for me too, one of those scenes where everything - the music, writing, acting and editing - all just work perfectly together. Added to which, one of the things I like about the new series is how they treat the TARDIS as a ship but also almost an elemental force and when the glasses and chandelier start shaking it's like the entire universe is rumbling back into alignment as she reappears. Love that daft blue box.
@aureliaansah1462

+Anon Ymes I agree. That haunting score, Moffat's script, Karen's performance & the editing, all towards the climax of the TARDIS appearing, are beautifully perfected. I love it too. :)
@IDidntSetAHandle

Firstly - yes, amazing moment. Love it. Smith nails being old and young at the same time in that scene. Secondly - not to be pedantic, but where's the "sad"? The line is "The daft old man who stole a magic box, and ran away...". And the music score's title follows the earlier line, "Mad man in a box". Alright, I was pedantic. But only because I think the 'sad' implies a lot. Please point me towards it if it's there in Series 5, because there's plenty of other times you could call the Doctor the "sad old man in a box" (c.f. "The Girl Who Died") - I just don't see him doing it himself here, but it would be interesting if he did.

Some of the plot being a bit convoluted and complicated is gonna be a big part of Season 6. Everything eventually DOES get answered, so don't worry. Moffet does tie up all the loose ends in case you were worried about how parts of this finale came across. He just likes the idea of multi-season arcs instead of keeping them contained like RTD did.

I remember reading 'Neuromancer' for the first time and feeling like it was a headlong rush through something I only half understood at any given moment, it felt like something new and exciting - pretty exhiliarating when it works but it's a very delicate balance between carrying a somewhat perplexed but engaged reader/viewer along and losing them completely.

Confusing is Moffat's middle name... He never met a paradox he didn't like.....
@anonymes2884
7 жыл бұрын
AFAIK Moffat's first published Doctor Who fiction is a nice little 7th Doctor story called "Continuity Errors" in which the Doctor badly needs a particular book for some adventure but runs into an obstinate librarian. Turns out she's obstinate partly because she's had a somewhat tragic life so he goes back to fix her life so she'll end up happy enough not to stop him borrowing the book (which is about as "Doctor Who"ish a solution to that problem as you're likely to come across IMO). The story's only about 15 pages long IIRC but it contains the seeds of a lot of his future Who writing - basically, the Moff has apparently always loved the timey-wimey (as do I so it suits me down to the ground).
@anonymes2884

+Dave F You mentioning Children in Need brings "Timecrash" to mind too (which I think has already been reacted to) - that might be Moffat's first _screen_ outing for the bootstrap paradox and in some ways it's even more blatant than 'Space' and 'Time', partly because it's simpler and so a bit more obvious as to what's going on (in fact 5 basically says it to 10 in dialogue).

Very enjoyable debut series from Matt Smith, I enjoy your reactions Sesska, I don't normally comment on things like this, I just get annoyed when people think they are being clever and give spoilers ruining your enjoyment when they think they are trying to be clever, If you were going to a cinema to watch a film. with a friend and they had seen it already would they spoil it for you?, of course not so why do it here.I think that's my role to police the comments!! Just joking. Be interested to hear your season 5 review thoughts and how it compares to previous seasons (getting American now) i.e. New doctor,new companions,new tardís design, new show runner etc. Be interesting to hear your top 5 episodes of the series, I suspect it may be more difficult then previous series. My personal favorites are The Eleventh hour due to the challenge of launching an all new cast and story arc big pressure Steven Moffatt (new show runner) was under at the time and the two part angel episode oh and obviously Vincent and the Doctor, oh and the Big Bang, ah what the hell they were all pretty much above average and as you say the Easter eggs were subtle but worked magnificently. Wonderful reaction. And unless I missed something, a little early too. Thank you. :) The first time I heard "Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue." used to describe the TARDIS, my jaw hit the floor. And Rory, even a plastic duplicate of him raises loyalty to an artform. But we still need to find out who was behind the TARDIS exploding, what's River's story, and will the Ponds survive? Next season was split in two with a big gap in the middle. Thus the 7th episode is a mid-season finale. And there are 14 or 15 'webisodes' this season ... some little more than teaser trailers (but still fun) while others are standalone vignettes. But the two during the midseason break I think are important (one was actually filmed a couple of years later to retroactively fill in a plot hole that had developed). I liked the prequels to ep 1 and 7 too. (This is difficult without mentioning titles. I don't know if you consider them spoilers. Anyway, check with your supplier.) Thanks again for the last four reactions, they were great, and I'm looking forward to the next season. :)

Been awhile for me. But I can remember that I consider this one of Doctor Who's best episodes and definitely one of my favorites.

So glad you loaded this up tonight rather than tomorrow. You've mentioned your allergy sniffles a few times but I never notice them, unless you somehow manage to edit them out. Someone pointed out that this was the first series since Doctor Who returned that the series finale did not feature a change in the cast. The Eleventh Doctor, Amy and Rory are all there and ready for the Christmas special. What will happen to them then??????

Was surprised to see this up today, I'll consider it a birthday gift to me. :D Really enjoyed watching your reactions this whole season, and look forward to what's next. Though, I think you should watch minisode "Space and Time" that takes place between season 5 and 6. :)

God, the greatest finale in Who (in my opinion at least). Such a beautifully written piece from start to finish

Well, there's something to mull over. Technically, Amy and Rory would now be older than The Doctor. Kind of, but not, but still kind of. It just goes on from there. I don't think I'll ever get enough of watching you be so confused, entertained and invested at the same time. I can't properly express to you just how much you rekindle the feelings of watching all this for the first time. But suffice it to say, you do. :) Thanks again. Always looking forward to next time!

Great episode. I enjoyed it not just for the big scenes but the minor moments like the way Amelia looks particularly like grown up Amy when she's pissed off, the way her family react when Amy goes into one at the wedding and of course River offing the Dalek (I just think we should have got the actual shooting). I think I might get out my boxset and watch the whole thing again.

+ WolfGratz Or Rory's background conversation as Amy strides up to the TARDIS. "It's the Doctor, how could we forget the Doctor ? I was plastic and he was the stripper at my Stag do...". Arthur Darvill's delivery is so casual and matter of fact, it's the perfect tone for the line.

Yeah I really, really like Arthur - actually I prefer Rory to Amy.

This two-parter was hammer down on the feelings for sure. My "allergies" flared up watching it too: watery eyes, sniffles, all of it. But it was a brilliant ending. My summation for a friend of mine who felt just as confused and befuddled as you apparently did after part one was "Now you know exactly how Rory has probably felt the entire time he's been with the Doctor." :-D Amy and Rory were my favorite companions, and that says a lot since I was a huge fan of Sarah Jane during the 4th Doctor's days.

I'm about to start the reaction which I can't wait for, but yeah to people saying this is the end of good Doctor Who... no. Stop it. Season 6, to me, is particularly incredible.

Great reaction - Don't feel bad if it seemed too complicated - Steven Moffat who wrote this series, said that he needed a flowchart to keep all the time travel stuff straight in his head!

I haven't watched this video yet, but I will. I just wanted to comment on your newest Doctor Who reaction. I just found your channel a couple days ago, and I love your videos. I've watched all of them, up until Silence in the Library so far. I can't wait to see more of your reactions. And, as much as I wish I found your channel sooner, and was able to participate in the conversations, I love that a: I can't accidentally spoil it. And b: I don't have to wait long to see your reaction to the day of the moon. Pandorica. And many others. Thank you. :)

I'm almost caught up. Just watched your reaction to "Day of the Moon". 11 is my favourite Doctor, and I loved you're reaction to him. I think his interaction with Amy, Rory, and River is one of the main reasons. The actors have such a natural chemistry. I also wanted to say, that I get why there is so much debate on what is the best, or worst of Doctor Who. Everyone has very different, but strong opinions. But as Whovians, we are all one fandom. Probably why you get so much love on your Doctor Who videos. For me, it's like getting to watch them all over again for the first time, vicariously through you.

sesskasays you said during your reaction to the runaway bride that your a wedding planner just a quick question what do you make of Amy's wedding dress I worked in a wedding boutique for a couple of years although I worked more in the menswear section in what was called the three T's (tuxes tailcoats and top hats) and I thought it was gorgeous

Glad you enjoyed this finale! It is probably as timey-wimey the show gets so don't worry, it's not as confusing from this point on. Can't wait for you to start S6, which includes Torchwood Boy's favourite episode!!! There are about 8or9 great episodes for you to react to, so don't worry at all about the show not being as great
