Matt Smith said in an interview that he loved doing this story as he had two classic companions who already knew the Doctor and the TARDIS and were familiar with all the wonders of the universe. So you didn't need these scenes of the Doctor explaining everything.

This is my favourite SJA story; I’m a very nostalgic person so I loved all the flashbacks and emotion behind these episodes. Plus 11 is my favourite Doctor so that definitely helps. I grew up watching Classic Who with my dad even before the show came back and his favourite Doctor is Jon Pertwee so I watched Sarah Jane a lot (her debut is actually my favourite classic story) so seeing her return and then get her own show gave me so much joy. I have so many fond memories of watching the show with my dad laughing about some bubble wrap monsters that I’d almost forgotten about. Thank you for bringing them back to me ❤️

If it wasnt spotted, this was written by Russell T Davies, who left Dr Who at the end of Tennant. So this was the only time he got to write Eleven. There was also a bit of a fan hoo-ha at the time when the Doctor told Clyde how many times he could regenerate. It was thought to be meant as a retcon, but I always took it as The Doctor trying to be positive for the kids, and not let them dwell on the finality of death.

Finally watched the whole reaction. That was great! Excellent reaction Jess! And yes, Jo Grant was a Classic companion. This marked her return to the Doctor Who universe after roughly 37 years. Moffat was pleased with the 11th Doctor’s involvement in SJA and encouraged Russell to allow Amy to make a cameo in this but sadly it couldn’t happen. I love the scenes with Sarah Jane and Jo bonding together and reminiscing over their adventures with The Doctor. Jo finding out that The Doctor saw Sarah Jane more than once is heartbreakingly good. It’s great that she gets to have a private talk and catch up with The Doctor just like Sarah Jane did in School Reunion. I also really like the mention of the Doctor seeing not just companions that met him in his 10th incarnation but also other Classic companions too while he was on death’s door. This is also the first and only time that RTD writes for The Eleventh Doctor. Its the only time that the RTD and Moffat era truly combine. Sarah Jane mentioning the legacy that other Classic Who companions made throughout their lives was a very beautiful way to conclude this story.

'Eleven makes people feel important' such a perfect way of putting it. Eleven has such genuine love for the universe and the people in it and makes people know how much they matter. Compare Eleven here to Ten making Martha feel like utter shit and completely unwanted just because she wasnt Rose.
@whovianhistorybuff
6 жыл бұрын
thesimpsons17 I think a lot of what may shape the doctors personality comes from he views his decisions and actions of his previous self like how when when 11 met the daleks for his first time he was so much more directly hostile to them (I just can't picture 10 whacking a daleks with a wrench) and when he met Clara (proper Clara) he never made her feel like he was comparing her to Amy and it's the same with everyone else from Rory to Craig to van Gogh he did indeed make everyone he met feel like the most important person in the world, whereas 10 almost always seemed to be comparing Martha with rose making her always feel second rate, which is why for me 10 will always be overrated in my book.
@bebskieto59
6 жыл бұрын
thesimpsons17 I don't think that's really fair considering that Ten was grieving. The way he treated Martha wasn't deliberate or out of spite. I know that doesn't justify the way he treated Martha but it was simply out of grief which can do crazy things to people as demonstrated in this episode and make them act differently. He still appreciated Martha and thanked her for all she did for him and in the end, he did show clear regret to how he treated her but he always appreciated her company regardless. Ten had his own way of uplifting companions. Same for Nine and other doctors. Personally I prefer 10 or 11 who tended to be too overly comical and panto but this episode is one of the few times where 11 is more tolerable for me but each to their own. We all have our favourites.
@thesimpsons17

Bebs Kieto grieving.... she didn't bloody die! He has lost companions over the years and moved on. But Rose is somehow special despite only travelling with her for 2 years because RTD did his seasons in pretty much real time with the Doctor being 900 in season 1 and 907 when 10 Regenerated. I'm surprised Twelve even remembers Rose at this point, if you were 2000 years old would you remember 2 years you knew someone when you were 900? Amy and Rory died after travelling with Eleven for over 10 years, Adric died in front of Five. Clara died in front of Twelve. The Doctor always moves on, Ten in series 3 was one of many times he was completely unlike the Character I've known for 55 years
@bebskieto59
6 жыл бұрын
thesimpsons17 It doesn't matter if Rose died or not, it was still a huge loss for The Doctor regardless. Being trapped in parallel world with no wormholes or gaps allowing her to return to Earth where The Doctor was meant that there was no chance of them seeing each other again and the fact that she was thought to be dead in the real world which in a way felt like she had actually died. The Doctor doesn't always immediately move on. Sometimes he goes through the grieving process and it didn't just happen with Rose. After The Doctor wiped Donna's memory, he was affected and hurt by her loss so much that he made the decision to not travel with people anymore because he felt guilty and responsible hence why he denies Christina from travelling with him because he was afraid of her being another companion that gets hurt or lost because of him. It was a similar case with Eleven after Amy and Rory's departure. Honestly, Amy, Rory and Clara died so many times that it lost any emotional impact for me but the fact is that 11 made the decision yet again to stop travelling with companions because the loss of Amy affected him so much which is not much different from the way 10 reacted after the loss of Rose and two years later after the loss of Donna. The point is that people grieve in different ways whenever someone is lost forever or dies which was also demonstrated in this episode in terms of the way Sarah Jane reacted to the news of The Doctor's death by the rogue UNIT agent.

Some Doctors actually treated their companions like crap, particularly the First. And Tenth didn't treat Martha all that badly, it was others' perception of what he *didn't* do. They thought he should have seen that she had developed romantic feelings for him (after one trip) when he didn't.

It was also a pleasure to see Jo Grant again. Her character was unfortunately written as a bit of a dumb blond, coming between two very smart, strong companions (Liz Shaw and Sarah Jane), but she was very endearing and had a good rapport with Dr 3. Also, the chemistry between her and Sarah Jane in this story is great, and very genuine (the two actresses had a similar relationship off set). Thank you Sesska for highlight how great The Sarah Jane Adventures is at dealing with grown up and mature concepts such as coping with death. Haresh's speech was perfect and rings true to how people can react or deal with grief just like that story with Gita washing the walls after the death of Rani's uncle and just like how Sarah Jane reacted with the supposed *"death"* of The Doctor. The denial stage she was in and the grief slowly kicking in was acted so well. This is what most of us experienced when learning about the death of Elisabeth Sladen which makes this moment even more sadder in hindsight because I had a similar reaction to Sarah Jane. The grief was too much for me to handle. Moving on from that sad factor, this was a great reaction. It's great that you got to see 11 again. You got to see your Doctor once again and for the final time. Your excitement and emotional feeling is completely understandable. Sarah Jane and Jo are so great together. Santiago is indeed Iron Fist. I enjoyed the conversations between Clyde, Rani and Santiago. Classic references were also lovely. Memory stuff was good too. I've been waiting for this reaction since you started Sarah Jane. Jo Grant is one of my favorite Classic Who Companions and it was such a delight to see her in this. My only remaining Classic Who wish is to get to see Ace once again (she is mentioned in this episode, if I recall correctly). Russell T. Davies was planning on doing a Sarah Jane/Ace story but when Elisabeth Sladen got sick that was never able to happen. Maybe someday Ace will get to return.

I feel like the unit officer at the end had the most violent human death in Sarah Jane adventures terms, all topped off by the Groske remarking it smelt like roast chicken. Takes the sweetness of the rescue away a little bit when you realize just out of shot there’s three charred corpses XD

Jo Grant is my third favourite companion (Jamie and Ace are hard to top), and she's so good in this. Her departure is definitely the saddest without having melodramatic, over-the-top music (not saying the music's bad, it just forces more emotion to a scene where it could still work without it). The subtlety in emotion in the ending of The Green Death is what makes it so real, and it really felt like 3 lost someone very close to him.

Hi, Jess. I've been waiting for quite a while for you to react to this episode. Great reaction to my favourite episode of the SJA. I always felt the SJA were aimed at a much younger audience, so I only occasionally dropped by when the Doctor made an appearance. So now you have met my two favourite Doctor Who companions from my childhood - my beloved Jo Grant (played by Katy Manning, the only surviving companion from the Pertwee era) and of course sweet Sarah Jane Smith (the late Elisabeth Clara Heath-Sladen). The latter actress has worked with the most actors who have played the Doctor. She was originally a companion of my favourite Doctor from my childhood, Jon Pertwee and, like her namesake Clara Oswald, was one of only a few companions to have witnessed the Doctor regenerating. In Sarah Jane's case, from Jon Pertwee (3rd Doctor) into Tom Baker (4th Doctor). Elisabeth Sladen also appeared alongside Richard Hurndall as the First Doctor, Patrick Troughton (2nd Doctor) and Peter Davison in his tenure as the Fifth Doctor in an episode called "The Five Doctors". The others were Jon Pertwee and pre-recorded scenes of Tom Baker as the latter actor refused to participate. He was known to be difficult to the production crew and often threatened to walk out during his tenure. As you now know, Jo Grant left the Doctor to get married and when the Third Doctor said goodbye to her, it was one of the most heartbreaking scenes in Who's history. I was an eight year old girl at the time and nursing a broken heart over losing Jo, when I was introduced to Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith and I immediately took a liking to her. Elisabeth/Sarah Jane healed my heart and, to this day, Jo and Sarah Jane remain my favourites from the classic series. Now you know that Elisabeth Sladen also worked with David Tennant in Doctor Who and the SJA as well as Matt Smith, the last time the Doctor made an appearance in the SJA. Jo Grant worked with Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton in an episode called "The Three Doctors" during Pertwee's tenure. You saw a clip of it in this episode. William Hartnell made a brief appearance in the episode on a monitor as he wasn't a well man. My two favourite companions, Jo Grant and Sarah Jane Smith have both worked with my two favourite Doctors, the Third (Pertwee) and the Eleventh (Smith). It doesn't get better than that. It was a nice little introduction to Jo Grant and I'm glad you like her, Jess. I hoped you would and I hope will grow to love the young Jo Grant as I do, sometime in the future. Glad to see you managed to squeeze a reaction video to this episode before your break. Take care and I look forward to seeing your next reaction to Doctor Who. Brace yourself!

I've waited for this story since you started SJA. Loved your reaction realizing it wasn't going to be the 10 but rather 11 and then when Matt showed up - priceless! Both Elisabeth Sladen and Katy Manning said after they did this that they really felt Matt *was* the Doctor in real life. He seemed to channel their mutual Doctor at times and then, just being Matt and a little clumsy and goofy, but still highly intelligent, serious when necessary, , and very caring was what the Doctor was all about. They loved him too!

I think we were all waiting for this particular reaction and you did not disappoint. I loved your dawning realisation of who was coming. I love Jo Grant and it was so nice to see her and Sarah Jane together.I believe the next classic character scheduled to turn up was Ace (Dorothy, mentioned at the end) who is one of my all time favourites and my first ever companion. I also think that one of the best moments in the first part of this story is the talk about grief. It's a beautiful piece of writing that sadly became more relevant to the viewers watching this show. Like you, I loved the scene with Jo and 11 and would've loved to see more of them together. 11 is my favourite doctor too (though I am very attached to others. 7 & 8 spring to mind) and I am so glad that he got to appear in this show too. Oh yeah and another Game of thrones connection coming up later this season as well!
