Fear Her is not actually a bad story. A child's loneliness and withdrawal from reality, domestic abuse, the dead father personified as a Devil-like figure - there are some pretty deep themes for a story that was intentionally written for children. If you're looking at the 'worst episode of Doctor Who ever', how about The Wedding of River Song, The Name of the Doctor, A Good Man Goes to War, Let's Kill Hitler - any story written by Moffat between 2011 and 2014. Chibnall at his worst is nowhere near as memorably bad as Moffat was: he's just boring.

In fact I'd say his run started going dowen the toilet with the whole River Song story in series 6, when he started writing like RTD, aka toilet writing.
@adamj.cuthbert7528
2 жыл бұрын
@@TheRealMrsB Series 3 had a lot of great stories: The Shakespeare Code, Gridlock (one of my personal favourites), Human Nature/The Family of Blood (a masterpiece of television), Utopia (not so much the other two parts, I'll give you that, but they still have their moments); I also quite enjoy Smith and Jones, and The Lazarus Experiment. Blink is vastly overrated: it's not the worst episode of the series - that goes to 42 by Chibnall - but it's far from being Moffat's best story, which is still The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, in my opinion. Series 6 is where the show crashed and burnt; it has many excellent stories - The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People (an underrated gem), The Doctor's Wife, The God Complex, The Girl Who Waited - but the worst series arc, which was a convoluted, nonsensical mess. Series 7 can be skipped entirely: it's a complete waste of time. However, it did feature the last great story until Series 10's World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls, which was A Town Called Mercy. Series 8 has a couple of good stories, same for Series 9: the main problem with both series was Clara Oswald, who dragged the entire show down. I like Heaven Sent, but it's only good, not great. It works well as an encapsulation of many of the tropes Moffat has explored throughout his Doctor Who career, and in that regard I compare it to something like Ultra Comics by Grant Morrison, which also summarised many of the tropes he's explored in his career, condensing them into one tight narrative. Chibnall is a bad writer, one of the worst, and his tenure has been awful from day one. In saying that, however, he's nowhere near as memorably bad as Moffat at his worst. Nobody would remember The Timeless Children, if it hadn't rewritten the show's history since 1969: it would be completely overlooked and forgotten, like every other Chibnall story. Moffat at his worst at least elicited a strong emotional response. Chibnall's stories leave you feeling bored; not angry or upset, just bored. I dislike Moffat more than Chibnall because he had no excuse for not doing better. Chibnall doesn't have the same amount of talent.

I remember when Dr Who was a straightforward, easy to understand children’s show. I grew up watching it from 1963 in fact, and as an 8 year old, I knew who was who and what was going on. Now I’m much older and I haven’t got a bloody clue what’s happening. I’m not ready for the nursing home yet, and I suspect that Dr Who is not meant to make any sense anymore. It’s almost as if the writers have all dropped acid and the actors are just ad libbing their way through each episode as if they were doing some sort of experimental theatre workshop.

I haven't watched this new series, but you do have a valid point about how the modern series showrunners are very often far too invested in making a show that is trying to demonstrate how 'clever' they really are. A lot of it involves the time-travel aspect to the series, using it in ways that the original series didn't, but in doing so, and in becoming obsessed with mining and subverting the mythos of Doctor Who itself, they don't see that this is _not_ good storytelling. The series is at its best when looking forward, finding original new stories and places to visit, and not being distracted by its own history and mythos. I think it is very fair to say about the Doctor as a person that he never looks back. He is always looking forward. From the moment he left his homeworld he shed his past and reinvented himself as 'The Doctor', on a mission to explore the universe of time & space, while offering help to those in need of it.... That's really all you need for 'Doctor Who'. But it has been forgotten, and for a long time now alas.

As the Managing Editor of venerable old Films In Review, I would like to say that I have been waiting with great anticipation for 4 days for your review and you did not disappoint. Hilariously accurate and devastatingly on-point. The show is so badly written now that the viewer is inclined to begin to believe that he has developed alzheimers because he cannot understand what's happening on the screen. I was most shocked, however, by the incomprehensibly poor greenscreen work which was so full of matching errors it seemed like special effects equivalent of online dating. I wonder if they did not go into the newsroom studio and put the actors in front of the weathernan's greenscreen just for S&G's after they gave up on the script. Even worse, there was no seeming attempt to really match the people into the CGI, just click on the green, it is replaced by the CGI and add a little halo effects to try to blend an obviouly studio-lit group of actors into a CGI planet surface created by - and I really believe this - consumer-level CGI landscape creation programs. I very much appreciate your videos and look forward with huge anticipation to each one. It's like not being able to take your eyes off the fatal car crash, trying to deal with the graphic and tragic horror of it all, and then getting a catharsis when the cop shows up and mentions that the people killed were a bunch of Nazis on PCP who just got through raping somebody's grandmother. Suddenly the crash is enjoyable and you look forward to the next one. Thank you for keeping even we professional producers and reviewers sane, because the deeper you are professionally in this business, the less possible Chibnall's era becomes and the more likely you are to start fearing that you have developed dementia as you watch people on the screen you cannot recognize saying things you cannot understand. Thank you.

In a nutshell, Chibnall was "borrowing" plots from other writers again. Time slipping Dans date was copied from Donnas story with her VR family in Forest of the Dead. Having the Doctor and Yaz appear as other characters in scenes from peoples memories seemed a rip of of the Big finish Story 'Zagreus' where past doctor and companion actors appeared playing different characters in a psychic flashback. Even his "timeless child" story arc seems ripped off from Andrew Cartmel's "The other" plot idea. This man hasn't had an original thought in his entire life, and for some reason nobody at the BBC seems to mind that he is copying the brighter students homework and presenting it as his own .

Nicely restrained review for the the worse Doctor Who episode in history. So far! Your good friend from Tardis Zone, Noel, gave it an 8/10. I know these things are all subjective but he must have taken cannabis before viewing 🤣 which is probably the best way to view present Dr Who. Joking aside, we are back into The Timeless Children territory. For some reason people think Chibnall is going to wrap this version of the Doctor up in an alternative Universe, separate from the one that contains Doctors 1-12. God, I wish that would happen but something tells me that Chibnall ( the narcissist) wants to put himself through the canon of Doctor Who like the word Blackpool in every piece of Rock. The damage was already done in the Timeless Children, so revealing the Doctors parents as well won’t be as bad but it’s still bad. No longer Dr Who but Doctor Known. However, people like us knew how awful this garbage was going to be. I can’t for the life of me understand why others thought this would turn out to be good. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me! Fool me thrice, I’m a masochist. Noel(despite Once Upon Time, that further destroys canon) is looking forward to next weeks Weeping Angels episode. Whoopee! Can’t wait. Maybe, it’s just me but the Weeping Angel was moving while being observed. So unless, Dr Awful, The plank and comic relief were all blinking at exactly the same time, that should not have been able to happen. Can it! It’s Chibnall! Rules don’t matter to him. Still, apparently it’s an 8/10 from Noel. Which, like episode 3 itself, is totally , totally baffling!

Under whatever attempt it makes to rustle up so razzle, seems like a lot of empty treading water, giving characters meaningless scenes in the past that cant advance anything actually happening, filling up the time until the more engaging story next week. I expect Maxine Aderton's script to be a step up and I think she may actually get the Angels and deliver something memorable, at least in part, but then it will be downhill to collapse with part 6, and there is no way these ratings are going to do anything but keep sinking. The BBC is coming close to two options for this show- 1-Having RTD come in, tear out the entire Jodie run, and somehow making it clear that THIS WAS NOT THE DOCTOR, and there's some kind of massive gaslighting/mind screw campaign going on (perhaps with a scene of the cast dancing to "Dem Bones"), or 2-Close the show up for 5-10 years to let the worst of stench die down, salvage what remains, and start again with a competent production staff. Anything less is not going to get the fans back. Anything less is going to confirm to the nominal fanbase that they're not having the Doctor regenerate, they're peeling the skin off the Doctor like Buffalo Bill and prancing around and demanding that we respect the rotting skin-suit.

Damn - I missed this one, too. There was a rerun of Geraldo Rivera's "Al Capone's Vault" episode that I just had to watch - again.

Now that I couldn't care less what happens to the main characters, I found this episode torturous to get through. It was just irritating noise. Chibnall offered a disjointed, incomprehensible structureless script to an already overloaded plot featuring as many irrelevant hooks as possible, Daleks, Cybermen and Angels plus a plethora of characters I don't even want to know about. This is the antithesis of say, Heaven Sent. Chibnall must be the worst writer on British TV to date. The ironic thing is, he thinks he's being clever. Add to this the incompetence of the production team who can't edit, commission decent actors or produce worthy CGI and you have something that was a disgrace to have ever been broadcast. Horrible.

Chibnall seems to be absurdly, absolutely unsuited for Doctor Who. He tried leading it in his own "new" direction with season 11 - and it was as bland and moralising as it can be. Then he tried RTD approach of season arc, Master behaving in crazy close to Simm fashion, epic emotional finale. Timeless Child twist broke the lore and the fandom. Now Chibnall tries to copy Moffat - confusing flashy apocalypse tied to Doctor personally, fast pace, new uber dangerous villains and parade of old ones. But it doesn't look like homage, it's just a repetition of bits that worked before. It's almost sad - that he is so uninspired.

This was a pretty crap episode. Its obvious there's going to be 3 episodes which aren't episodes at all but rushed connective nonsense to fill the episode count.

Well Bowlestrek makes everything sound awful so actually you missed quite a lot. The weakest episode of the story but the ep 4 was the best episode of the era

Talk about a yo-yo going up and down at a rampant pace. This episode managed to make The Timeless Child almost tolerable (almost but not really). Good news for Colin Baker (although he supported these rotten decisions) but within a huge part of Dr. Who fandom The Twin Dilemma will no longer be considered the worst Dr. Who episode ever. So many new candidates like Orphan '55 etc...Once Upon Time was dreadful and best.

As ratings hit an all time low.... BBC Executive: "It can't be the cast, the writing, bad green screen or the save the earth and woke messages being crammed down the throats of people that just want good entertainment... You know what we need?? We need more Daleks, Weeping Angels, Cybermen....all at once... that will fix this train wreck!" Can none of these people be fired? One of the biggest problems is the commitment to overcompensating for not being as diverse or woke in the past. Except now the story is an afterthought to support that message... Boo hoo hooo we are sooo sorry we didn't have more women and ethnicities.. WHO CARES, just stop already! Just make the best show you can, with the best story and cast you can. They took almost everything that made it Doctor Who successful and removed it. They must all hate Doctor Who and are trying to wipe it from the face of the earth.

Wow..... It's nice to see the show emulate the classic effects at least. Also...... after the pandorica the universe was reset based on Amy's/maybe the Tardis and/or Doctor's mind.... but all this past shite survived somehow.
