Yes I was truly shocked by how low it was myself. I expected it to get 8 -10 million or more with Tennant. It shows how badly damaged it is. It was the 60th, the most popular modern Doctor was back and it was on here in the Uk on a dark cold winters night, there was a massive audience out there of many millions. There are at least 65million+ in the Uk now and all it managed was about a million or so more than Whitakers last story. The fact it was an adaptation of a classic Tom Baker comic story as well, should have got older fans back, but it seems that thankfully they are not as stupid as RTD and the BBC think. This show was killed stone dead by Chibnutz and Whitaker. Its really obvious now.

But the female Master / Doctor and rewrite of the backstory etc meant they lost me more or less for good. The only way I would go back is if it was written with a male and made like it was in the Hinchcliffe and Holmes era. And not a single mention of gay / trans / bi / lesbian / colour issues, just story and adventure with the Doctor as the hero and his companion along for the fun to help out. Most of the Capaldi run was good, but Moffat was clearly running out of fresh ideas. I still value him highly, it was a good showrunner. However Capaldi's final season with companion Bill and her constant "I like other girls, I'm special!" preaching was already annoying and it was a prologue to the Chibnall's terrible tenure. Scripts quality already decreased back then. But even before Bill, they tested the waters with female Master and since reception was mostly positive, they moved further with their plan. Now RTD is back and instead of getting glorious return of Classic Doctor Who, it seems we got Chibnall 2.0, just this time with slightly better writing. "The Message" is still there though.

Writing was so so so basic and i think the identity political message was the reason in the mind of Russel when he wrote this instead of entertainment being the reason for the script thats where Chibnal failed and thats where RTD2 will fail. When you write for the message the entertainment storyline is not there it's substance and depth are taken away because you dont have entertainment in your mind when you are writing for the message. Sure the message is still there but its not pushed on us its left for the audience to to interpret but in this day in age its rammed down our throats instead and thats what has happened here hence the basic story line and as you say none compelling characters. Dont get me wrong i have nothing against how people want to identify i actually would date Yasmin Finney she's a really pretty lady and seems really nice in interviews but i just dont think Identity politics belongs in a fantasy realm thats all. He has gone full on Brie Larson / Zeggler now.....I just saw the ratings for this one and it was not that amazing. They are raving about it being high, but it was only 4. something million peaking at 5 million. A million or so more than J.Ws last story, so all that time away, the 60th and the fact that Tennant was back never got it up to double figures or even close. I would have thought more fans would support it, especially after all the positive noise in the media and papers with talk and buzz and reviews. So it seems to me the show is still badly damaged and all the trans pushing in this one wont help it....

He was always woke, though back then BBC mostly wasn't, so his preaching was limited by them. Still, even then he managed spread his ideology a bit, just in a more subtle way. "[...] Nancy, the young woman who told him not to answer the phone earlier, finds them [Children] food this way, waiting for families to hide in shelters before stealing their food. I mean Chib basically done that to OG Who making the first Dr not actually the first Dr and ret conned all of their work so seems fair that it can be done to all his crap. However this is the BBC and someone said Disney is now involved? That said, a show/franchise is not entitled to _anything_ , it is not a being with a soul, it is just an artwork like any other that is entitled to nothing be that praise or fairness or even engagement. Critics could never be called fair but some can be considered more in line with the consensus of the majority of viewers or more valid to those with similar tastes. That's what the critics/criticism really is for. To guide the viewer/reader in finding things to their taste and avoiding those that are not. It's only beneficial to an artist if they are looking for popularity and how to better tailor themselves to that popularity. Unfavourable criticism can either be taken on board to improve popularity or rejected at the expense of some loss - big or small of your audience. It seems clear anyway that RTD is not looking for faithful criticism to improve. He is set on his own path but at the same time he *does* want to whine about the criticism. As do a lot of these studios/directors/entertainment industry persons having seemed to have forgotten that there is no social contract that says that a thing an artist creates MUST be loved and admired by all. Meanwhile anyone and everyone is quite free to say all the things they like about the work. The ball is in the court of the artist to consider whether numbers matter more than their message . . . but a message read by no one is of little use.

The overt messaging in this episode was absolutely off the charts. Even the original comic strip was clearly 'problematic' to RTD. In his version of the story, the Meep are turned evil by a 'psychedelic sun'. In the original comic, they turned into evil mutants because their planet was infected by the radiation of 'the black sun'. But obviously, the public can't be trusted *not* to infer that a black sun is some kind of coded racism instead of simply a millennia-old way of symbolising darkness and destruction (the same comic introduces Sharon, the Doctor's first black companion, and at no point did I ever think of her as anything other than a decent human kid), so we'd better say 'psychedelic' instead, even though that makes no sense whatsoever. It seems that if you want to rewrite the dictionary, all you have to do is stick a photo of David Tennant on the cover and the public will lap it up.

Yes I read all those Tom Baker comic stories at the time. Brilliant and Sharon was a black girl and pretty cool, she more or less filled the role of the trans. And as a kid I knew what a black sun was. It was a BLACK HOLE!!!! Pure and simple, a sun is star. And when it collapses it becomes a black hole, so calling it a black sun is pretty much covering both ends of its life cycle and very sci fi.

Yes the comic is a classic. There is a whole slew of Tom Baker adventures in comic form from the late 70s and early 80s. You can now buy them a s compendium graphic novel and there are some great plots and ideas. RTD knew this and mined them for this plot about the Meep as he knew classic era fans would more than likely get it as they would have read it back as kids. It was a way to say to older fans - Look I understand! Here is some classic Doctor Who comic come to life. I get it and I am a fan! Then went on to crap all over men, the Doctor and push the Trans button repeatedly. Every other scene revolves back to that and mentioning it in some form or another.

Noticed almost all the positive reviews come from younger millennial types. They seem to think it’s the best thing ever while a lot of older fans either skipped it or lambasted it for “the message” being ever present. Plus pointing out and correcting the Dr, despite being a woman at times, he still can’t get it. Isn’t the Dr like around 1000 years old with who knows how many incarnations since the retcon with the Timeless Child? You’d think with that much age and experience they’d get a helluva lot more than someone with less than 100 years of life and only one perspective. Bringing Tennant and RTD back reeked of desperation to me. Yet no one was willing to undo Chinballs damage. That would’ve fixed a lot I feel. What is interesting is the ratings. It did not do that well. Peaked out at 5 million. Which is incredibly low when you look at the fact there is at least 65million people in the UK at the moment. It did better than the last Whitaker story by a million or so, but it never got 8 - 10 million which I was expecting as Tennant was massively popular as the Doctor. Looks to me, its as you say, younger woke types watched, but far less older viewers or long term fans. Those ratings show how damaged this show truly is. I gave this a go as I wanted to see Tennant as the Doctor again, instead of a nasty anti male female. And for a few minutes here and there it moved me and made me sad over what we have lost. Tate was incredibly annoying as ever, but that is her thing. The trans person looked ridiculous in some shots with the other women as she he is much much taller and heavy of frame and looked female in some light, and like a bloke with a bad wig in others. The trans crap was as subtle as an avalanche in a brick factory. And just when you thought it was over and they had got it out of their systems, it was back in another scene. When Rose was out of the way the show improved, then she is back at the end, to slag off men and the Doctor with Tate. That scene just brought tears to my eyes. Tears of despair and rage. The new Tardis console room looks good though, I liked that a lot. Its a fan design rip off homage from a few years back and looks incredible on screen, compared to the crappy backwards single level rocks and crystal version. The story itself is lifted straight out of a Tom Baker era comic, and adapted. But BTrek is right, it did feel a lot like many of RTDs early shows, the same street at night from Stolen Earth, Journeys end, Cybermen v Daleks stories, and a huge disaster that resets like it never happened. There are some bits of this though like Tennant running round in his new Tardis that were lovely, the rest was woke dog crap as I expected. I just wonder if it will improve in the next one with Rose not around. But there is no hope again once Ncuti is there, he is going to be full on gay promotion an dont watch Doctor Who to see that, so I suppose I will go back to my sad lonely life. I am trying an experiment tomorrow with some video editing software. I am going to cut out all mentions of Rose, Trans etc as I can, remove any mention of the Doctor being a woman as well, then I will watch it again and see if it improves, it will be better I am sure, even if it is a bit too like some other RTD stories of the past...

Are they going to do that and how will that sit with a family tea time audience? I keep thinking of Mckellan as Gandalf. He is gay, and yet played Gandalf totally straight and asexual and never once felt the need to add lib his sexuality into a scene with Gandalf as its not in the books. This is actually a fine example of a Chibnall episode: turn everything up to 11, with loads of virtual signalling, explosions, loud music and little substance. I wouldn't call it terrible but it was poor from a man who wrote such gems as Midnight and The Stolen Earth. If we are going to be told The Message every week from now on, I won't be sticking around.

I think Steven Moffatt wrote midnight, but yeah so many good stories by R T Davies, like how do we go from episodes like "the waters of mars" to this?

RTD sure knows how to make a fun and cohesive story. That’s something Chibnal didn’t know how to do. Say what you want about the gender commentary, but this episode is a major jump in quality from the usual Chibnal garbage, from a script and directorial standpoint.

Welcome Back Boss! You are the best Doctor Desperation reviewer on the planet! It really is a shame that where Doctor Who felt timeless and fresh its now going to be STUCK in this insane time period. I could watch David Tennants original run now and it would feel new. I will probably never watch this episode again, or the ones that follow it, but if I did, it will probably feel as dated as if I was watching an old 50s sitcom or an old 70s cop show. You just look at them and think "Wow! I cannot believe people talked and acted like that!" In 60 years people are just gonna roll their eyes and go "The 2020s were a WEIRD time"
