Kexin's routine is so timeless, even in today's code of points her 2011 routine (the hardest version) is still more difficult than Nina's 2019 routine, just shows how awesome her bar work is

After all gymnasts came back from HK and Macau tour, each went back to her hometown for celebration before going back to nat'l team training in Beijing. Sept 10 was Teachers' Day in China. He Kexin visited her primary school, Heping North Road School in Dongcheng District of Beijing. She presented flowers and kissed the principal of the school. What a champion! Jiang Y, Yang Y, Deng L also visited their hometown schools.

He K is quite humble but more talkative than Yang Y, who is really shy. Jiang Y was the only one among the 6 gymnasts who was injured during the Olympics. When head coach Lu Shanzhen visited his hometown he told provincial team coaches that they shouldn't overtrain young girls and cause injuries. He even said that he saw 7-8 yr olds who had serious injuries. He was kind of taking a swipe at his colleague Xiong Jingbin, who coaches Jiang Y and Deng L. He was featured on Dream Weaver 2008.

lizzle is absolutely right about Fei. Although there was intense internal competition to get on the Olympic team, the gymnasts were like sisters-they trained and lived together for so long it's a closer family than their own parents. Remember when He K lifted Yang Y after Yang did a great routine? He K thought that Yang Y won gold on UB and congratulated her. He K has class. So do the rest of the team. They have good relations with Americans, especially Shawn.

Some history: Chinese gymnastic teams started only in 1953 and weren't admitted to FIG until 1978. In 1979, they participated in the first World Champs in Ft. Worth. Ma Yanhong won gold on UB, the first Chinese world champ in gymnastics. In 81, the Chinese women won team silver while men won team bronze. A huge achievement considering how crowded the top women teams are--USSR, Romania, East Germany. Then Chinese women slipped behind from 1983 on. In 84, Ma Y won gold on UB again.

I don't think Fei would be jealous... Cheng Fei is such a sweet person and very humble (I actually met her briefly in 07), she feels only disappointed at herself, she said she never expected to fail so badly (or something like that) google quotes for cheng fei EF... what's more she prefers less media attention herself, she was always very shy of interviews and when asked to do adverts apparently she said 'but I have to train'... so I don't think you need to worry about her being jealous.

Her family didn't move to Zhejiang. She was selected by Zhejiang province and trained there. It is very common in China. Li Shanshan from Hubei, but she failed to make the provincial team there. I am not sure whether Jiang failed to make Guangxi team or not. But Guangxi team was tradinally strong for sending top athletes to the national team, such as Mo Huilan and Li Ning.

Tea, He Kexin is coached by the team of Liu Guicheng(male) & He Hua(female). The woman in the video is He Hua. I didn't know that she was hospitalized. He K's father had a minor heart attack and was hospitalized before the Olympics but recovered. He's mom is a researcher in the prestigious psychology institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences. You see, not all Chinese gymnasts are born in poor families, although a majority of them are. He is a native of Beijing for sure.

In case you never heard of Dreamwaver 2008, it's a Chinese documentary on the prep for the games, filmed over 7 yrs from 01 to 08. It featured 3 gymnasts under Coach Xiong, incl. Jiang Y, Deng L and Nai Ruoyu. Nai was severely injured in late 06 and didn't make the Olympic team. They were little kids in 03. Jiang Y said she was 12 then-consistent with her being 17 this year (Nov 1 is her b-day). Xiong was a tough coach-he made Deng L cry many times.

Kexin's primary school in Beijing is getting many times the number of applicants than they can handle. And the attitudes of parents are changing. Nowadays many rich parents are wary of spoiling their kids and are sending them to military schools. Not all gymnasts were born poor. Fan Ye, Nai Ruoyu, Liu Xuan, He Kexin are from relatively well-off families. BTW, each gymnast gets paid anywhere from 1.5 million Yuan ($220K) to 5 million Y ($730k), depending on endorsements and awards by local govt.

Jiang had severe foot injury last winter but recovered. Right before Oly she had a wrist injury which affected her vault. Jiang, Deng and Yang will train for AA. Chinese fans are worried that Yang will grow too tall, but she said she wanted to be like Khorkina. Yang's parents are very tall. I saw footages of He K's floor and beam-not bad although she fell on a layout on beam. They say she can do DTY on vault.

In 00 Sidney, Liu Xuan won gold on BB and Ling Jie/Yang Yun won silver and bronze on UB. The team won bronze and with disqual of Raducan, Liu (4th AA) was elevated to bronze on AA. After 2000, the women's program went downhill again, with Zhang Nan's AA bronze the only medal in 04. The team finished dismal 7th place. From the late 80's til now, the men's program has been mostly dominant except the shocking debacle in 04. That's why women's team gold in 06 World Champs in Denmark was a pivotal

Teagarden, He K is the only double gold medalist in women's gym this time. Yes, it seems she enjoyed the limelight. CCTV invited all Chinese male and female gold winning teams to imprint their hand prints and they will be preserved permanently, just like movie stars in Hollywood. At the event, He only wore one gold medal whereas all other gymnasts wore all their medals-Yang Y wore one gold and two bronze and Cheng F also wore one gold and two bronze.

Tea, you didn't miss much on what Coach Xiong said in Dream Weaver 2008. The video on KZitem didn't have English subtitles, but the DVD sold in China gives you a choice of 7 languages incl English. Xiong is a tough coach. I dont think Deng can switch to Lu's team. On CHN natl team, each coaching team consists of a male coach and a female coach. Xiong is the former coach of Lu Li, the UB gold and BB silver winner in 92.

He trained in Beijing most of her life. Last year Hubei team "borrowed" her to compete in the City Games, which is a competition between different cities. According to a sports official, when she transferred from one province to another, her birth date was erroneously recorded--the basis of American uproar. BTW, Liu Guicheng/He Hua also coached Mo Huilan, Fan Ye and Li Ya. Now He K isn't polished on BB, but that coaching pair is well known for coaching BB--Mo and Fan were world champs on BB.

Tea, I didn't know there is KZitem video of them on HK tour. They must do very simple routines on tours. Jiang used to be roommate of Deng in natl team dorm. See Dream Weaver 2008. In Olympic village Deng was roommate with Kexin. It seems that Deng really likes Kexin. Everyone there recognizes that Deng made great contributions to the team gold, competing on 3 of 4 events, although she didn't get into individual finals. As to Liukin and Kexin scoring high with falls in prelims, I agree w you.

FYI, Jiang Yuyuan was the breadwinner for the family since age 9, when she got on the provincial team. BTW, $250k-700k is VERY good money in China. Most people even with advanced engineering degrees don't earn nearly that much in lifetime. These teenagers are already earning it. BTW, I don't care about age issue either. If a 12 year old is good enough to compete, let her do it.

I agree that US, Russia and Romania will come back in London with vengence. Most Chinese predicted that Romania won't let their tradition die and Izbasa kept the flame alive. The Chinese team will be strong with or without CF. The team gold really galvanized their program. A few years ago Lu was worried that parents aren't sending their spoiled brat princesses to training anymore. Now gymnastics schools are getting double or triple the number of applicants.

You are right that Chow doesn't overtrain Shawn. She trains only 26 hours a week and stayed away from injuries. Read Moceanu's website and she's very impressed with the way Chow trains Shawn. Yang Y was happy with her performance but she said she wanted a silver instead of bronze in AA. Shawn increased her FX start value at the last minute and beat Yang on FX. Shawn's total score was only 0.075 over Yang at the end. BTW, none of the gymnasts were underage. Dream Weaver 2008 proves it.

Anyway, Jiang Yuyuan, Deng Linlin and Nai Ruoyu were coached by the same coach, Xiong Jingbin. Even without translation, you can see that he's a very tough coach. Jiang and Deng are on the gold medal Olympic team and Nai was injured and got out of the national team.

After 84 Olympics, the Chinese women's program went to nowhere. Men's program suffered to with retirement of Li Ning, Tong Fei, etc. Late 80's saw the women's program rebound a little bit, with Yang Bo on BB and Fan Di on UB. In 92 Barcelona Lu Li won gold on UB and silver on BB. The mid-90s saw a golden age in Chinese women's program--Mo Huilan and her team silver in 95. But they had little competition experience and faultered under pressure. Also, their UB was overshadowed by Khorkina.

The latest news is that she's still with the team, although she's been criticized for gaining weight after the Olympics. Reports said that she gained as much as 20 lbs after the Olympics, but she's losing weight now and has shed 10 lbs. The other athletes seem to be in good shape, although even the "underage" He Kexin said that she had a difficult time competing with younger gymnasts. They are also keeping an eye on America's next generation gymnasts like Jordyne Wieber and Rebecca Bross.

I read a few posts on Chinese blogs. They really know gymnastics, unlike our blogs which don't go much beyond "Shawn is hot" or "Nastia is hot." Actually the new Code of Points will heavily favor release moves (He K's forte) and devalue pirouettes and turns (Liukin, Yang and other Chinese). He will benefit from the new COP. However, on BB it will devalue some somersaults and deduct points for imperfect connections while awarding jumps. Not good news for Shawn.

I just find it weird that so many people are convinced that the chinese gymnasts are underage even though they did not find any hard proof to support that. As for London...I know that most of them will continue to train for the time being, but there are also rumors that Li Shanshan might be considering leaving. It was widely rumored a few yrs ago that Belu may be hired as Chinese head coach. Then Romanian president asked him to stay and he was given the head of sports ministry position. The Chinese also dispelled rumor and said that Lu S will remain head coach. Anyway, now the Chinese women's program is in better shape than men's. The men don't have AA gymnasts after Yang Wei, Li X and Huang X retire. With 5-3-3 format, you really need AA gymnasts for team competition.

USA had almost home court advantage in Beijing-you hear chants of USA all the time. BTW, the Chinese aren't nearly as nationalistic as you think. Anyway, I don't know the latest whereabouts of the Chinese gymnasts but they should be back to training in Beijing now. Most Chinese bloggers think that Li Shanshan won't be in the future lineup because her only strong event is BB and she won't have a place in 5-3-3 format. Head coach Lu Shanzhen wants to concentrate on training AA athletes. Women's AA is the only event among all 14 gymnastics events in which China has never won a world or Olympic title.

Mobius, I watched a short clip of He K on BB but don't remember the link. She did a nice layout but fell from the end of the beam-meaning she was straight but too much power in the somersault. She said she will train as AA gymnast. Mcksimmons, I watched Hall of Fame show on CCTV and don't know if it's on KZitem. 5-3-3 format means that in team finals after 08, each nation can only send 5 gymnasts total, 3 competing in each event, all 3 scores count. Very bad for gym powers like China or USA

Chinese head coach Lu slammed other coaches for overtraining their gymnasts. Lu borrowed a lot of American ideas like more competitions instead of training to get used to spotlight and so on. Shawn is popular both here and in China. Her bubbly face and big teeth helped. She's got some Chinese nicknames like Minnie Mouse, Power Pack, Mortar (for her muscle-packed power), etc. Liukin is too cold. Shawn stayed for the closing ceremony and took pictures with Chines team. Liukin left early.

Former BB champion Yang Bo said after watching the team finals that when she was competing the girls were always as if they were inferior to their male counterparts. Now they are equal. In all sports except gymnastics, Chinese women did better than men. Did you know that China is the only country other than USSR that has men and women's teams on top of the world at the same time? Japan was all men and Romania mostly women (except a few male event specialists like Urzica, Dragulescu).

Too bad that gymnastics got too risky--there are paralyzed Chinese, American and Russian gymnasts. Re East European gang, I agree. Most Chinese gymnasts still come from poor families bc tuition in gym schools is cheap and they get a salary once they get on provincial team.

BTW, female gymnasts are actually more popular than male gymnasts in China, just like here, although their male gymnasts had more success historically. If you look at Asian gym programs, females do a lot worse. Look at Japan and S Korea. The only Asian women's team ever to reach the top is China.
