My dad had the 5.9 r/t. However he did about every performance upgrade you could think of under the hood including supercharging it, ended up over 600 horsepower at the wheels. Man was that fun to drive. It had bigger 20 inch tires on it with a lot more grip than stock and you could still spin the tires if you hopped on it at 45. Then his new girlfriend decided she didn't like it and he sold the truck 3 weeks later. I've refused to speak to her since.

I had 2 Dodge Dakotas, first one I drove in high school. My dad bought it new in 96, it was a 97 model year. SLT trim Extended cab, 3.9 liter V6 2wd with the chrome package and was red. It was a 5sp manual. I had it like 2 years and had to have the transmission rebuilt several times. A number of years later I bought a used 2002 Dakota Sport which was the base model. It also had the 3.9 V6 and a 5sp transmission. I loved that truck and I drove it from 2007 to to about 2017 when the head gasket blew. Sold it to my father in law for 700 bucks and he fixed the head gasket and drove it another 2 years. It was black so the clear coat looked like shit because it was peeling off, I guess Dodge had a clear coat problem with those years cause every black dodge Dakota from around that year I've ever seen had peeling clear coat. After about 2 years of my father in law driving it he had a break line rust through on him so while at the local auto parts store getting a brake line he was offered 2k for it by another customer so he sold it.

my dad had a red 99 durango with a 5.2 (318) magnum engine that he ended up driving for a couple of years before i was born and kept on driving it until 2011 and ended up selling it. he took out the engine and rebuilt it because he planned on using the engine again in a durango that he found on craigslist. he ended up buying a silver 99 durango with all of the same options but it had no engine, my dad ended up plopping the freshly rebuilt engine into the silver durango. that was when it became my childhood truck because i have the most memories in it. i always remembered the durango as really tough and unbreakable, he used to tow medium to large sized campers with no problems and 35 foot boats in the summer. the only thing that we had problems with was the heater in the winter, it only blowed out Lukewarm air, otherwise it was a good truck

Had a 98 Dakota V8. The engine / transmission was shared with the RAM. Nothing wrong with that. Picked up the stage 2 mopar kit, and it would go like stink in a straight line. When the video started, fond memories arose. Then I remembered how bad the brakes were with its 3 channel ABS. I started to wonder how bad those brakes would be after 15+ years, and then you had the braking moment. Yep, that's a Dakota.

Yes, the Durango shares the Dakota chassis, driveline, and all. You ought to drive an 03 or newer 2nd gen. Last of the hardworking small(er) pickups. I've got the 4.7 which is just an awesome engine for its age. it's like a mini Hemi, but with a bed plate, so you can really beat on it and not worry. Long as you change your oil, it will run a good long time. My 03 has the overhead computer with garage door buttons and six way power seat which was a really cool thing to have in a pickup that cost way less than 20,000 new back in 03. Less power than that dinosaur 5.9, but similar torque and way better fuel economy.

Brings back nightmares of my last Dakota. 1997 Sport, regular car, V6, 4X4. We bought it for $500, it leaked from almost every seal, had rust holes you could pass a beer through, part of the windshield was starting to delaminate, and the odometer only worked twice in the 4 years we owned it. But we couldn't kill it, no matter how hard we tried. We beat the hell out of that truck off road, and took it all kinds of places, for hunting and fishing trips, while we lived in western NY. When we moved in 2014, from NY to PA, we traded it to my ubcle for a 3 year old side by side fridge, and he then got another two years out of it, before it caught fire, due to a busted fuel line, on his way back from church. it then went to another member of the church, who had a good body, frame, and engine in his, but needed a new trans and transfer case. It had all the normal issues that one would expect from a truck with close to 250,000 miles on it, from rot holes you could reach through, and unlock both front doors, to the peeling clear coat, that mainly seemed to affect the green or red Dodges of that time period. (And yes, the two times that the odometer worked, the first three numbers were over 220,XXX.) About all that was still solid on it was the frame. And thanks for the band memories. trumpet player from the early 1990s here. As I had a 1973 extended cab F250, guess who always hauled the drums, and larger Brass instruments, to the games.

My parents once had a 2002 Dodge Durango, which is basically the SUV version of the Dakota. If I remember right, it had pretty much the same engine offerings as the Dakota, which were a 3.9l Magnum V6, the 4.7l Magnum and the 5.9l Magnum V8 (LA derived). It was a nice vehicle, albeit a cheapish interior. It also had a tendency to nickel and dime my parents, and the abhorrent MPG the thing got with the 4.7 were the primary reasons my parents sold it off with only 47,000 miles on it for a Toyota RAV4. Pretty reasonably capable off-road though, and had plenty of grunt. Even did towing. And that V8 sounded pretty nice, I'd say. A few favorite stories I have with it involve the one time my dad and I were trying to use it to inflate an old UAV parachute by dragging it along. He had me drive it down the road while he was going to take a picture, and the parachute got snagged on a car's tire (one sitting on the side of the road), and began DRAGGING THE CAR ALONG. We later, wisely, found an empty lot to perform the trick. Another was the one time I took it down a back road and got the damn thing up to 80 MPH around a corner. I about shit myself there. DAD STILL DOESN'T KNOW ABOUT THAT...

after reading your road and track review about the Dakota I think you got a not so good Dakota. I say this because my 2000 dodge dakota SLT quad cab with the 5.9 and has 169000 miles on it mine is still like brand new. My dash is not cracks ( and is the same dash that came out of the factory ) and my suspension is great and also it don't pull left or right under breaking and my clear coat is still on and not pealing. For the Dakotas I think it all depends on the owner and how much they care for the truck. All that is just my opinion with all do respect

Dakotas came with several engines. Originally in 1986 when they were released as a 1987 model year you could only get a 4cyl engine or a 3.9L v6 carbureted which was a LA engine not a Magnum, in 1988 they came out with the upgraded Throttle body fuel injected 3.9L v6, the Magnum V6 came out in either 90 or 91 and raised the horse power from 136 to 210, the torque remained about the same at 240 ft lbs. Also as the V6 magnum became available the 91 Dakota had its front end changed and extended to fit the 318 V8 aka 5.2L the same engine you could get in a Ram in the 1980's. then in 1997 they released the new version of the Dakota that would last until I believe 2004, which offered the 360 Magnum V8 in preparation for 1998 with the release of the Dodge Durango, essentially a dodge Dakota with 3 rows of seats and no truck bed. At which point your engine options would be either a 3.9L v6 Magnum, a 5.2L v8 magnum or a 5.9L v8 magnum. Also the difference between the LA engines and the Magnum engines, was simple.. Higher flow heads, and intake manifolds. Along with slightly better exhaust manifolds and more complex emissions systems. The LA engines still used the old SMOG PUMPer systems that pumped fresh air directly into the exhaust manifolds to help burn all of the fuel by increasing the oxygen. I've owned 3 Dakotas and a Durango.. And I can tell you, BY FAR, the absolute most reliable one is the 1989 Dakota, with the throttle body injected 3.9L LA V6. You cannot kill this engine, nor does it burn oil or antifreeze at 300,000 miles. The Magnum engines I owned did not hold up so well.. about 200,000 miles and they needed bottom end re-builds speaking of the 3.9 and 5.9. Also I might add I owned a 88 PowerRam 250 with a 318 v8, I turned into a mudd truck many years ago, and I held that pedal to the floor in 1st gear for hours day after day with that truck and it would not die... the frame eventually gave out, not the drivetrain. HOPE that helps with the dodge info lol. If anyone has a problem with these trucks I have already fixed it more than once just ask.

Hard to believe, but it had a kind of cult following in South Korea. When it was new, it was the largest and most powerful pickup truck(actually the only import pickup. Ssangyong made one based on a Musso SUV, but it was much smaller) sold in the country and benefited from tax laws which classified it as commercial vehicle. So it was popular among outdoorsy DIY guy type of fellows.

Durango shares frame, suspension, drivetrain, with the dakota, everything from the front doors and seats - forward is the same interior and body as dakota. Gen 1 Durango are just Dakota Wagons. Also are best Durangos haha.

My friend Kyle has a 97 Dodge Dakota Sport that's purple. If you want to buy it because it says sport and you think since it says sport, it's fast, don't. I've driven it and it's just a flat incline in speed and it's not really exciting. But it's a regular truck, it's not supposed to be quick.

Knoebel's Grove is the shit son... My (now wife) is from Florida, but she came to Pennsylvania to visit me, and I took her there. I now live in Florida, and having seen Disney, Universal, Busch Gardens... the magic of Knoebel's just isn't in the big places.

The Dakota V8 in 2000 was the 4.7L OHC, and prior to that was the 5.2L OHV V8, which is essentially a fuel injected 318. The Ram's small V8 was the 5.2L until 2002, when it received the 4.7L It was like Chrysler was trying to follow the Ford modular V8. The first and second gen Durango were based on the Dakota, and are littered with Dakota and other Chrysler parts bin parts. A PT Cruiser would be fun with your Neon past. In the spirit of Lee Iaccoca and the K car, what else can can we build off this compact front wheel drive platform? Can we enter the new millennium with our own Y2K compatible retro car, which evokes the hot rod past, but is really a compact 5 door hatchback?

+CJ DASHCAM Holy shit, a 3 speed? Get the fuck out of town! The only 3 speed vehicle I've ever had was an 80s Saab. Granted though, I did love that it only shifted at 25 mph, then again at 45 or 50 and you were done shifting. Kind of nice lol.

***** Honestly I think the 7, 8, and 9 speeds are a bit much. There should be like 4 or 5 lower gears, then maybe a 75mph + highway cruising gear.
