Techniques for control over sound in music for left hand alone/why the length of physical articulation remains significant when using pedal. (nb see the comments for a higher quality KZitem link)
In piano playing, it's often impossible to hold notes for their full marked duration, for conventional legato. This is especially common in works for the left hand alone- where the pedal has to be used to keep notes sounding after release . However, it is a big mistake to assume that the length of physical contact simply has no effect whatsoever, as long as the pedal is down. If it were so simple, it wouldn't be so difficult to create a convincing illusion of two hands, whilst using just one. There are both direct and indirect effects of contact length that need to be appreciated, as having a very real effect on the sound produced. When using the pedal to "cheat", arguably it's only all the more important to avoid any hurry to release notes- to allow for the best chance of controlling the sounds that are layered together.
Possibly against my better judgement, I allowed Mr Chuckles to take part in this video, although it remains to be decided as to whether he'll be back in the future.
