I have adopted a philosophy of ‘be kind or be quiet’. When we are made to feel bad about ourselves it’s harder and harder to find the motivation to move forward in a positive direction. Thank you for being so open and honest. It’s rare these days.

I’m a scientist and extremely data driven. The thing is, studies consistently show that shame is not generally a good motivator to encourage behavior modification. Anyone who thinks that they’re being helpful in anyway by shaming others to do anything is objectively wrong. Good on you for being a badass and motivating and encouraging others!

The science on metabolism and fat storage has a long way to go, too. It's a very complex system and it seems like we are just scratching the surface with regard to how it works. The sociology and psychology definitely have a lot to say about the damage that fat shaming does, though. That is definitely clear.

Shame is a really interesting topic. People self shame all the time. They feel shame if they over eat, live in a double wide, don't have nice things, loose a job and go on some type of assistant. Alcoholics have been historically shamed for drinking to much and and other addicts fall into that category also. Maturbation shameful, we've all heard the term walk of shame. Athletes feel shame for coming in 2nd and sometimes it falls on the shoulders of one person. A kicker that missed a potential game winning field goal in the superbowl. The soldier that turned and ran in the heat of battle or the guy that dressed up as a women to get a seat on a life boat. I'm guessing feeling shame has some benefits and the external expression of shame towards other might just be a deep seated fear of becoming that which they are fighting not to become. We have changed our precipitation of behavior in relationships to shame. We now have the slut walk, along with big is beautiful, Party like a rock star, food challenges, and greed is good. Today we can even shame people for shaming other people. Is it okay to shame other? I would think not but is it okay to condone or celebrate negative behavior in any manner that is detrimental to a person's health? I don't know that answer. The practice has not been studied but it is being tested and we'll see that results.

I'm at least open to idea that social approval or disapproval has a big influence on behavior. I'm thinking primarily about prevention. A good contrasting example is drug culture which is not socially acceptable in a place like Japan, but it is in most of the US. The result is very few tragic drug stories in Japan compared to the vast number of destroyed families and lives in the US. Once an individual has gone far down the road of hurting themselves, a different approach may be called for, but there's a danger imo of throwing out the baby with the bathwater by oversimplifying our conclusions. I therefore think that one of the best policies is go case by case treating people as individuals meaning to stick with people you actually know and let others deal with all the rest. In this medium it's almost impossible not to oversimplify a fairly complex issue, so even my best effort falls short. I certainly don't agree with the talking heads who care more about ratings than people and on close inspection fall short of exemplifying any kind of values which they claim. I think we'd all be a little better off if we learned to ignore them more often than not.

Standing ovation Cory. ❤️ One day I’d like to refuse my shame. It’s not just hurtful, it’s damaging. If a parent or teacher said such things to a child, it would be considered abusive.

Maybe I can relate somewhat as I grew up in a household that seemed to have one parent (closer to none tbh) who never said "I love you" to me ever, but countless times said, "I wish you were never born" idk, but maybe that's partly why the mountains are so inviting. Cold Kills Nature is Neutral and Mountains Don't Care. The wilderness does not disappoint me because it has no obligations by which to let me down. There is never malice behind any wilderness hardships, but every new discovered wonder is a life bonus. It might not exactly be a requited love, but in some mysterious way my spirits are often lifted by my days in the wild.

There's been a lot of that going around in somewhat recent months especially...sadly As a pseudo-nomadic traveler, I experience a type of isolation, but it's incidental, not really by design. I actually meet new people more often than many others do, which is part of it. I do confess that it would be a much harder way to live if I hadn't learned to mostly (not 100% there yet) to disregard the presumptions that people often make. Most of them will never matter to me one whit, but the few exceptions consistently learn that I am one who defies expectations.

You have inspired me in a big way. Even in the very early days of your hike, when you could barely walk and breathe at the same time, your determination, good humor and positivity were utterly amazing. A couple times when you apologized for crying, I was thinking, “Now THAT is true courage, to keep pushing on while the tears are running down your cheeks.” And doubly courageous, to honestly share your entire ordeal, tears included, with us. YOU ARE AMAZING.

Cory keep saying your mind. I am now 70 years old . 20 years ago I had open heart surgery. I weighed 400 + pounds and the Dr told me if I didn't lose weight I would be dead with in 5 years. I was 50 years old at the time. I changed my life to eat healthy, walking daily and trying new things that motivated me. I weigh about 225 now and am in Spain walking the Camino Santiago for the second time. I have lived to see my 4 children get married and enjoy time with my 5 grandchildren. You keep on being true to yourself and keep speaking out. You are an inspiration to many people. God bless you. Hugs!

Dear Sweet Cory, you are probably about the ages of our kids and so my heart is tender towards you, plus you are an awesome young man that should decide to NOT read any of that negative stuff, you don’t even want it to enter into your thoughts. Let your thoughts remain mindful of your journey and not anyone else interpretation of what they think you should do or not do. My husband is 75 and I am 67 and we are backpackers and so many people tell us we are too old to hike, we’ll get hurt, die on the trail, etc etc and we just snuff out that negativity by proving them wrong and realizing that they are just transferring their own fears onto us. I suspect you need a new shirt that says, “How you make others feel about themselves, says a lot about you “ or “What you say about others says way more about you, than the people you talk about”. Block the ugliness and surround yourself with just the supporters, that dear young man is not being mean, it’s being wise !

I love you, Cory. You are an awesome young man that I would be proud to call family, friend, son...whatever. I've watched your journey since the beginning and have always tried to be positive and uplifting in my comments to you and others. This was a great rant and so timely. We have more than enough negativity in the world. Shaming for any reason is bad and unnecessary. Unconditional love and acceptance is what we all need. I have a metabolic condition that predisposes me to obesity, diabetes, heart problems, reproductive problems...and the list goes on. Many people, my immediate family included, think I just eat too much. My son lives with me and he has told them that they are wrong. In fact, he has told them that he's concerned about how little I eat and tries to prepare meals that are healthy and appetizing, that I will want to eat. Please, everyone, don't jump to conclusions about others by what is visual. You don't know what they are experiencing or going through. Mamas tell their children that if they can't say something nice, don't say anything at all...at least that's how I was raised.

Thank you for speaking out about this. My grandson-now 16-was, a few years ago, fat-shamed by his doctor. Guess what? He refused to go back to that person! Fat-shaming, or any kind of shaming, is a form of judgement, which I was taught is wrong. I have lived my life this way, by trying not to judge others. It actually only makes things worse. Our society has gotten so far away from kindness; it’s really sad. Second Chance, I was/am not massively obese but I loved watching you vids from that first day you posted. Seeing someone commit like you did was TRULY inspirational and I thank you. I think I have a basic understanding of the fat shaming logic in humanity and don't believe the vast majority are intentional but rather ingrained in our DNA. Thoughtful words. It's difficult to make it clear that there's sometimes a baby in all that ugly, murky water labelled as "fat shaming" I'm giving away my age, but we did a lot of fat shaming directed toward the US Navy when I was a young Marine in the late 80's. By the early 90s being fat in the Navy became officially shameful by policy and huge numbers were effectively booted resulting in a more lean fit US Navy. As a somewhat specific case, I don't take that to be an example to follow for other cases, but it's something to think about.

Extremes are rarely the right answer. On this issue there is extreme fat shaming or extreme fat acceptance. There is also such a thing as rough love which seems to be a nearly forgotten thing, but it doesn't work too well by waiting years and years before applying it. Sadly, being in an era where too few people, even family members actually talk face to face anymore, it's hard to envision things getting better before they get worse, but we can try. As for me I'm all for cutting out this social distancing BS and sharing more hugs with people of all sizes. 🤗 That's one thing that could help imo.

Shaming for whatever reason is not okay. It doesn't motivate you, it knocks you down. It makes you feel like you are not good enough. Worst of all, It sticks with people for life. My story; Back in the 1970s, there weren't many kids that were overweight. I was one of maybe 3 kids in school. I was teased to no end. It got so bad, at the age of 13/14, I started to lower my calorie intake to lose weight. I mean I would maybe eat 400 calories in a day and go biking / hiking. By the time I was in highschool, I was teased so bad I ended up quitting school. I just couldn't take it anymore. It didn't make me want to lose weight, it made me really depressed. So much so I wanted to hurt myself. It really sucked. Little did I know I had a few medical conditions that went undiagnosed. I gained 100lb very quickly. Eventually I pushed doctor after doctor to help me find the cause, and we did. With some meds / diet changes, I was able to start losing weight. I have lost about 125lb over the past 2 years. The "Fat Shaming" from my youth is still with me. I wanted to join the YMCA, and I had to work with a therapist to be able to do it. I was so afraid that that "Fat Shaming / bullying" would return. How sad is that? Eventually I did join and the experience was great for the most part. in my 50s now, and looking back I think it's sad that I lost all those years.

We are all innately of equal value. No add ons or subtractions. Comparison ultimately means nothing yet is at the root of shame for really everyone. I think we just need to close our eyes, smile and breathe self-love in and out. Its something to count on. Whether self imposed or coming from the outside we are simply equal to whatever comes in the way. Shame is also a shadow with no actual teeth that can and does motivate and propel but absolutely needs to be dismissed if manipulated and mean spirited. We don't require any extra help to feel shame for sure! Heartening sights and the love of being with them dispels unnecessary conclusions. Here's a quote that I've referred to over years; Cultivate attitudes of friendliness toward the happy, compassion for the unhappy, delight in the virtuous, and indifference toward the egregious...that's from a yoga sutra.

There are so many pulls on healthcare. Recreational drug abuse, alcohol abuse, smoking... there are tons of "lifestyle" health issues that cost millions of dollars. Fat shaming is one of the last acceptable prejudices. Please don't let it get you down. Get out and explore but do be careful. Regardless of your size... some of the things you do out on trail are not exactly wise (i.e. not caring enough water, etc.) You still have to adopt safe practices and be careful exploring solo. Have you ever listened to the “Maintenance Phase” podcast? It totally shifted my perspective on weight and weight loss. I’d highly recommend for everyone!

It definitely doesn't work. Not even sure why Bill Maher would bring the subject up since he's never had problems with being overweight. Also, that study is a bit depressing because I believe the abstract determined that being obese is less strain on medical costs because the life expectancy is lower meaning healthy/fit people live longer and are more likely to face other medical/health related issues later.

Unpatriotic? Good grief! I would say that personal pride and individualism is a big part of our national identity so whatever, those things don't seem to be about size to me. Thanks for releasing this-- it is not talked about enough. This experience matters and we can ALL do better to support each other, right? That's patriotic!

Shame is a weapon used by those with power. Shame does not produce results. I see this with my students all the time, they have been shamed by adults and teachers for their entire life. &%&% the haters.

Indeed. If people are naive about something, a gentle reminder may work. It took some while to recognise smoking wasn't healthy for example, and the knowledge of that fact has helped reduce smoking. But too much "being aware of" something creates stress, and stress only works to solve short term problems. It's an instinct to avoid dangers such as animals or cliffs, but that's all it's made for. Long term it makes you try to avoid the problem, going in circles, depression, chaos and just a whole load of further problems. It just makes the whole thing worse. Be it body fat or other issues. In my experience, all that can drive you forward long term is positive ideals: What do you dream for, and what do you long for? You can build danger avoidance into such ideals, but it still has to be made into a positive idea, something that you want. And only then does it become something your subconcious mind will want to work with, something that can last. We are not driven by our consciousness but our subconciousness, and we need to be aware of that. Our consciousness can only work as a rudder, not the whole boat. I love your huge rants, by the way.
