@Metal-Possum

Jtek says hold my beer. The Shiftmate is a recognised hack to mix and match different ratios, even mentioned by Park Tool among others. Modolo do (or did) offer adjustable indexed road bike shifters that were compatible between the various Shimano and Campagnolo (up to 10spd) all in one shifter. As for front derailers, they're all the same cable ratios, some bikes come spec'd with a SRAM front derailer paired to a Shimano shifter for various reasons. I saw it a lot on road bikes with FSA front derailers, because they wanted to make the bikes as cheap and miserable as possible. All of this stuff is less mtb specific though, and probably better suited for touring and commuter bikes.
@nwimpney
4 жыл бұрын
@@Metal-Possum Yeah, I made pretty much the same thing myself, except that I put a screw on mine to fix the cable position so it can't slip. I'm pretty sure the Jtek just relies on friction to hold it in place, which isn't ideal IMO. Under normal circumstances, it probably works fine, but if you upshift when not moving, the cable can go slack and, it could easily slip a bit. I would also expect that in long term use it would probably very gradually move over thousands of shifts back and forth. Maybe people just think it's normal cable stretch, or whatever, and re-adjust their barrel adjusters as it goes. I haven't had to adjust mine since I built the bike 2.5 years ago, so I think it's a pretty successful hack.

Regarding the last question from Stan: To me it sounds like an enhancement to use AXS system with HYPERGLIDE+ cassette and chain. Best of 2 worlds?? If anyone made this experiment in reality and not just guessing I would love to hear the anwser. I think SRAM and Shimano made a blunder and now the systems are finally compatible! Also the freehub issue is involved here (SRAM XD vs Shimano Microspline). If microspline is better then even more enhancement of the combination!

The 12 speed cassette spacing is different between shimano and sram. Sram has 0.1mm more between each cog, which will add up to 1.1mm of difference on the last/first cog, which is enough to make your shifting wonky.

On my hard tail I converted from 3x8 to 1x8, running a shimano 11 speed clutch derailleur with a wolf link, sun race 11-46 cassette and 11 speed chain. Needed a sram 8 speed shifter to match the pull ratio with the mismatched cassette and derailleur. The pull ratio ended up being 1.18:1 on the derailleur and the shifter is 1.2:1 so was close enough. B screw tension was imperative, pretty much didn’t need any at all, more tension made the shift really laggy. No more dropped chains, shifted well, was a reasonably cheap conversion for an entry level $600 bike till I could afford the full sus upgrade.

For those who are looking for a clutched 9-speed system, I can safely say that it works 100% with a SRAM 9 speed shifter, and shimano's 11 speed rear derailleurs. Based on the info that used to be on BikeGremlin (that post was removed), the pull ratios match perfectly, more so than Sram shifter to Sram derailleur even. I tested this twice, once with a SRAM X0 9 speed Gripshifter with a XTR M9000-GS, it worked flawlessy. My current spare bike is running a SRAM X7 9 speed Trigger Shifter with a M8000-GS, and shifts are perfect out of the box. Both of these were on Sunrace's 9 speed 11-40T cassette, and were trail proven many times. There are some people (on the interwebs) that swear by using a shimano 9 speed shifter, together with a cable-botched 10 speed rear derailleur and claim they work, but judging from the pull ratios, I do not see how it can shift better than the SRAM 9 speed + Shimano 11 speed Rear D combo. If you need any help with this setup, or pictures, let me know.

From someone that has actually mixed and matched Shimano and SRAM 12spd components and ridden them extensively (rather than just talking about it on the internet...and made a video?!? - Com on Henry, try it!!!)...findings are: the shifters seem to pull *slightly* differently, aligning with the slightly different spacing on the cassettes. So, for optimal performance, pair shimano shifter with shimano cassette and SRAM shifter with SRAM cassette. My desire was shimano shifter with the sram cassette (who wants to buy a new rear wheel to change to shimano derailleur?) - but the alignment was slightly off either in 2nd or 11th/12th gears - 1st (the big cog) was surprisingly fine. It worked, but made a slight noise, trying to catch. A spin of the barrel adjuster would clean it up, but got annoying to do. So, eventually I put the SRAM shifter back on, paired with Shimano derailleur and SRAM cassette. So, for those with Eagle that hate the derailleur (I went though four clutches and loose bodies), the quickest upgrade is swapping in a Shimano XT 12spd derailleur with that existing setup. But, I'm just a guy posting on the internet... :)

Thanks for the great content..... my question is very similar to the last question of the video so it has been addressed to an extent.... So my bike has a sram NX eagle drivetrain. I am wanting to upgrade my wheelset, which in turn gives me the chance to change to either an XD driver, a microspline driver or stick with a HG driver. I have been thinking of trying to change to a lighter cassette so this seems like the time. I live in South africa and the only options available are Sram, Shimano, Sunrace and E*thirteen. I would love to get the e*thirteen as its basically the lightest however it is more than double the price of a GX or a XT cassette here.... my question is should I stay within one "brand" to get optimal performance or could I change to an XT cassette and chain and then over time upgrade the shifter and deraileur to shimano xt.... Would this adversly affect the performance of the system for the period I ride it with XT cassette and chain and NX chainring, shifter and deraileur? Thanks in advance #AskGMBNTech

I just completed a 1x conversion on my old Cannondale F5 hard tail. XT mech and shifter, Shimano 11 speed chain, OneUp Components 34t oval chain ring and the Sunrace 11-50 cassette. Sure enough the B tension is wound all the way in, but it shifts up and down the cassette without issue. If you didn't mind sacrificing a bit of top speed then the 11-46 and a smaller chainring will give you the same low gear for climbing.

All levels of SRAM Eagle 12-speed groupsets components are interchangeable with each other with one exception: NX cassettes require a Shimano HG driver while GX and up require a SRAM XD driver. An NX cassette will still work with GX, X01, and XX1 everything, just need to pay attention to your rear hub type. This interoperability is a feature that SRAM advertises.

Henry why don’t you satisfied your “scepticism and nervousness” (your words) by trying 12sp mismatch combos as a project rather than just opinion. You maybe surprised how well it works under load for the current 12sp drive chains. I’ve done it in out of desperation after braking a gx derailleur and did not bother swapping back. Better to be out riding than waiting on parts if possible. Like you I was sceptic about content showing shifting in a bike stand. This tickled my interest in what may work, so I tried most combos between sram gx, xo and shimano xt, slx and the main noticeable drop is in chain / cassette mismatch, the rest is minor; but it is still better than shifting half a decade ago. If a pure drive chain is rated 10/10 ; I would suggest than the worst you’ll get with mismatching most components is a 7 and with just shifter derailleur it would be a 9. Very subjective, but it would make an interesting tech project. Also some other brand 12sp cassettes would be worth testing as it would help people with a tighter budgets in replacing parts for ex sunrace ( I preferred their 11 sp cassette above shimano, but not their 12 sp offering). Thanks for the Tech show.

I got a 2019 Rockshox lyrik 27.5 and was trying to mount my guide calipers to the fork with an old post mount adapter (don't know the brand, says 40 mm though) but it doesn't seem to be matching up correctly for my 200 mm rotors. What adapter do I need to correctly match up the calipers to fit the rotors with this fork? Thanks for the help love the show!

This may be a bit of a dumb question but can you use a 12speed derailleur on an 11 speed cassette? I’d imagine you can bring it’s not under or over number teeth recommendation.

Shimano m6000 1x10 groupset or Sram SX 1x12 groupset with the NX cassette? Both are 50 tooth. Terrian is Slower, super techy with steep climbs.

Hi, I thought of trying an oval chainring on my XC MTB. But if the clutch is on and the chainring oval, am I not going to loose some Watts because it moves the derailleur cage back forth and all the time? #AskGMBNTech

Yeah, I think 12s cassetes from Shimano and SRAM have the same spacing between sprockets, so changing cassetes should work fine, even though it's not the optimal setting. The problem is when the shifter is from another brand, cause different shifters might have different pull ratios.

Please help, recently converted to a tubeless setup on my Grand Canyon AL SL 8.0. Alexrims M25 (TL Ready) and Schwalbe Nobby Nic 2.35 Evo (Tubeless Easy). I used the Muc-Off Tubeless kit with their valves and everything seemed to be ok. Following day did a 18.5 mile road (mostly road) with rear psi 35 and front 30psi. No problems. Next day went out again on the road so upped psi to 38 rear and 35 front. 5 miles in and BANG, rear tyre popped off, sealant everywhere! Any ideas why it came off? Thanks

Shimano 12spd RD simply don't work properly on any different cassettes than their own 10-51. There is a mid range shifting issues due to derailleur path. In stock setup it's unwilling to mate to any cassettes that don't have 51T largest cog. Eagle and anything that's 10-50 or 11-50 won't work. Somehow reliable solution is Sunrace 11-51, but the best option is basically running shimano 12spd cassette.

Look into Jtec problem solvers. I got a jteck 6 and am planning on mounting a SRAM x9 10 speed to a Shimano 10 speed road friction shifter.
@nwimpney

I am curious about those. I made my own converter, but mine has a screw to keep the cable from slipping. It looked like the jtec just relies on friction? If so, it'll probably need occasional tweaking as it slips and lets off a tiny bit of slack.

#AskGMBNTech I'm currently using a gravel bike as my only bike but sometimes when I'm doing trails or going of dropoffs on it the chain drops and gets tangled in the crankset when pedalling afterwards. currently running sora r3000, is there any old school mtb trick to prevent this happening or will changing the derailleur to on with more tension like an acera m4000 help with this problem. I would like to avoid the move to 1x as I prefer the range of a 2x at the moment.

@@superorion271 I haven't tried it myself, read it's good with 2x setups. My Marin Gestalt has a SRAM Apex 1x10 with Sunrace 11-42 cassette and 42t chainring. #AskGMBNTech G'day Doddy and Henry, I own a 2019 Canyon Spectral CF9.0. I love the bike but have noticed a few annoying little niggles lately. Firstly I am getting a creaking sound coming from what I think is the handlebars. They are Canyon's carbon 800mm bars and the creaking generally happens when you pull on the bars during a climb or intense acceleration. I have tried using assembly paste on the stem where it joins to the bar and the fork but it hasn't stopped the creaks. What could the cause of this be and how can I fix it? Everything is torqued correctly. The second question I have relates to my brakes. I have SRAM Guide RSC brakes and whenever I brake moderately hard there is a kind of warbling sound which comes from the brakes. I have checked that the calipers are aligned and that the disks are tight. I did notice that on the rear brake where I just replaced the pads (both front and back pads are the SRAM resin pads) the 'pots' seem to be pushing out unevenly. For example each side of the brake has 2 pistons, and one of the pistons on each side is pushing out about 1mm more than the other. The pistons that are protruding more are diagonal from each other so the pads still seem to be parallel. Could this be causing the problem and if so how is it fixed? if not what else could be causing the warbling sound? The brakes are cleaned and the sound is not like usual brake squeal. Cheers from Tasmania, Australia (GMBN needs to come down and try out Derby and Maydena Bike Park!)

Heres one H....will the shimano 12 speed chain (with its special plates to reduce vibration) mesh with sram eagle cassette, chain ring and jockey wheels. Reason is, eagle suffers from bad chain vibration...clearly shimano noticed this and engineered the chain to address it...sram being first to 12 speed, didnt.

Great answers. Simple and short answer to all of the questions would be "KISS - Keep it simple stupid". I've got a question about upgrading the freehub body: I've got a Sram 12-spd system with a 11-50T cassette on an Shimano HG freehub and I would like to upgrade it to 10-50T cassette. Is it just as simple as to switch out the freehub body for a XD-Compatible freehub body or is it more complicated than that? It's an All Terra Boost hub which is under a GT Sensor 2019 which I've got. Thanks. #askgmbntech

As near as I can tell, that depends entirely on what kind of hub you have. Some are really simple to swap (usually DT Swiss, SunRingle, Chris King, Hope, and other higher end hubs), and some are next to impossible (many OEM hubs). Some of the cheaper Novatec ones have swapable freehubs though. If you can find the brand of your rear hub, you can do some research to see if you can get the parts.
