Type O blood was supposed to be called type Zero blood (0) but it's not. It doesn't make sense to move from C to O, but it would make sense to say both A and B tags are absent, hence the use of zero. Right? No. The O is actually correct and comes from the German word "ohne" meaning "without". Though zero is in use some places maybe just colloquially/incorrectly.

I'm also O-. I can't say that I've never gotten sick, but I do seem to be resistant to severe respiratory infections, especially as I get older. When I was a kid and younger adult I caught a cold at least once a year, but nowadays I often go several years in a row without catching one. Also, despite having never gotten a flu shot, I haven't caught the flu since I was a little kid decades ago. I'm not really convinced that this is due to my blood type, though.

Thanks! Interestingly, the Levine PhenoAge test which uses normal blood born markers to estimate biological age, gives a lot of weight to MCV (mean corpuscular volume) and RDW (RBC distribution width). As we get older these values get larger, especially RDW. Speculation, but routinely donating blood as we get older may be one way to slightly increase turnover of RBCs and thereby have a slightly, on average, younger population of RBCs, and other factors in whole blood. Also, keeping RDW youthful (lower) may be one way to aid microvascular circulation.

The medical recommendation is to be fully vaccinated. The association between being unvaccinated or not boosted and long covid is strongly positive according to the findings. Nobody likes getting a shot, but neither I nor my MD spouse have ever been infected or ill from covid, and we are up to date on our covid shots. That makes us a minority of less than 10% to escape this disease here in the US.
