I used to listen to loud music too, but not so much for depression but instead for when I was frustrated and angry, and I had no other means of channeling it. When I was 17 (I'm 20), I eventually noticed that I had recently lost a significant amount of hearing capability in the sub-bass area. You don't realize it, but those frequencies are used so much in music and provide so much color to the listening experience - it gives it this certain warmth to it. Before that, I'd always hum the bass line while listening to music, whereas most people do the melody. All music since has been, maybe, roughly 20% less enjoyable to listen to, but I've expanded what music I listen to and have focused on other aspects of the music to sort of adapt. Now I'm more interested in vocal music, and try and use my mild theory knowledge to try and analyze stuff and it's provided a deeper appreciation for music, and I've somewhat rekindled my enjoyment. Sometimes, I get a slight glimpse at that deep bass, but it's gotten slightly worse since. My left ear is also about 5% less sensitive than my right, which is quite a bother. I don't have any tinnitus, but I do get the brief ~10 second long bit of it now and then. Wish I could hug you - it's a sad thing.

About 70% of my patients have tinnitus, so I’ll share what I typically tell them during counseling. We don’t know exactly why tinnitus exists, but this is the main theory behind tinnitus induced by noise exposure: in our inner ears, we have little hair cells that are responsible for picking up different frequencies. Some for lows, some for mids, and some for highs. The hair cells responsible for picking up the highest pitches are the closest to the outside world, and therefore are the most vulnerable. Similar to phantom limb syndrome, in that when a person loses a limb, they might still feel like it’s there - the theory is that when those hair cells are exposed to noise and start to die, the brain still feels like there needs to be stimulation, so it creates it’s own in the form of tinnitus. If the damage is to the hair cells responsible for high pitches, tinnitus is typically high pitched sounding. Same for mids and lows. A few things: •Both “tin-i-tus” and “tin-eye-tus” are acceptable pronunciations •You can have tinnitus without having hearing loss, but the majority of people with tinnitus do have some degree of hearing loss •Get your hearing tested. Even if it’s normal, it’s good to get a baseline, so if something changes, any hearing loss can be tracked over time. •Invest in some good custom earplugs. $300 can help save your hearing. •99% of the time everything’s okay, but unilateral (one sided) tinnitus is a red flag for something possibly more serious, so really, please get your hearing tested. •There’s no “cure” for tinnitus, but so many things can reduce the amount of stress is causes (avoid silence, get a sound machine/sound apps, CBT, hearing aids if necessary, and reduce alcohol/caffeine/sugar intake) Source: I’m about 6 months out from completing my doctorate in audiology (the study of hearing and balance), and I am currently doing my clinical fellowship. For legal purposes this isn’t medical advice etc etc

I've personally have had tinnitus I think since I was a child but didn't notice it till I started studying music production, as one of my teachers did a lesson about how important it is to take care of your hearing. 2 years on from having that lesson I've learnt to live with it, and to take as much care as you can while making music, e.g. not making heavy techno kicks for hours on end, and wearing custom ear protection when going to raves and clubs, even though it still makes my ears ring after. However, what helped me was thinking that many other producers and DJs from around the world are going through the same problem, and hopefully one day they will be a solution so we can all hear the sound of silence again.

I've tried for most of my adult life to talk people into wearing ear protection. I pretty much gave up. After a few live shows as a teen, I couldn't handle the ringing ears. It sucks so bad to get home from a huge venue and try to lay down and get a little rest.....but you can't sleep because of that high-pitched never-ending whine. I just decided very early on to start wearing ear protection when going out to hear music. When I started playing in bands, I would often have my own bandmates ridicule me for wearing plugs during practice. Practicing in a small room with a live drum kit is unbelievably loud, and there's no way I was going to subject myself to that kind of torture. I'm so glad I held my stance and did the best I could to keep my hearing intact. So much of my actual job now revolves around working with sound and mixing for video production - and outside of age, I know I can still make good decisions during production because I can actually hear clearly. Take care of your ears guys. You'll be so glad you did as you get older. If you really LOVE music.....then don't rob yourself of the ability to enjoy it later in life. Just. Wear. Plugs.

I wish I never let my mom raised the television volume to 67% while I was sitting 8 inches away from the TV screen. Five days ago, I sat too close to the television set for 15 minutes straight with really loud music from the TV blasting directly at my right ear, and I didn't know how loud it was until I immediately remembered that this could ultimately cause a permanent hearing loss. So I quickly lowered the volume 15 minutes after the loud exposure, and I instantly noticed a decrease in hearing in my right ear. An hour after the loud exposure, I experienced a tinnitus that is still going on today. I wish I was brave enough to tell my mom to not have raised the volume of the television set too high because now I think I made a huge mistake. I was already experiencing ear problems since a month ago, and this recent incident concerns me a lot. I've already went to many doctor appointments, and I was recently told to wait for my hearing to come back, but it hasn't returned. My parents don't take my ear problems seriously because I've been worrying about it for over a month now, which was the reason why I wasn't brave enough to tell my mom to lower the volume of the television set because I thought she was going to get angry in disbelief. I'm 19 years old, and I'm still very young. I definitely did not deserve to lose my hearing. I always loved my hearing. If I don't get my hearing back in my right ear, then what will I do now? Hearing aids are far too expensive, and I loved listening to music and watching KZitem videos before I started to experience ear problems. I'm not sure if I'll ever enjoy these activities again.

@@klokateer39 For me it was an intermediate issue. I still hear a very faint high pitch when I am tired. Back when I was 20ish the soundwave was pulsating like you mention. I then eliminated all headphones from my life. First year was a bit of hearing and here and there, more or less the same. Second year also, then again didn't fully quit but I generally reduced them to only on work out. Third year I had an unrelated surgery so I had to recover and this is where I really dropped them 100% I think. Also I stopped putting strain on the head, mostly tried living calm since then. So more or less in a process of healing time did its thing, over a gradual period of time the cells apparently renew in a barely noticeable way. If in 2014 the issue was quite recurring, often even during the day I had these soundwaves like a UFO came to abduct me, I swear I thought it's a plan or something. Over time the frequency and intensity reduced, maybe it's also due to aging, that was a possible explanation since the frequencies get reduced as you get older. But then again whatever did it, did it. Now I barely have something like that. Only very late at night sometimes when tired i can Hear the high end sines. Yup that’s how tinnitus is a bitch! I had some audio therapy to help manage my tinnitus and was taught that the more you think about it, the worse it gets. It really is all in your head so if you can ignore it, you’ll find it much easier to deal with. I struggle mostly with sleeping. White noise from fans overrides the ringing, but I know others use the sound of waves, whales, rain or whatever relaxes them but can also drown out the ringing.

I don't know how many people missed that and I am sorry. but that is how volume works, and plus. when I am not working on music it seems to me I like everything quieter as well, my video games, youtube or anime is turned down to microscopic levels, I still have my full hearing and I am 22. I feel your pain. I mainly get flareups if I have been in a loud environment for more than a minute or two, but aside from that, the ringing is pretty much always there. I definitely did not take good care of my hearing as a kid since I often listened to music at loud voiumes while wearing earbuds, and that's probably one of the worst things you can do for your hearing outside of being in extremely loud environments without hearing protection. I have also been to a couple of extremely loud concerts that fucked my hearing up for like two weeks straight, and I'm sure that permanently damaged my hearing in both cases and probably made my tinnitus worse to a degree. There's a trick you can do that aids in relieving tinnitus symptoms temporarily. I recommend looking up a quick video on how to do it since it's kind of hard to explain with words, but basically you just cup your ears with your palms while your fingers are wrapped around the back of your head with the middle fingertips touching, and then you thump your index fingers against the back of your head at the base of the skull where it connects to your spine. You will both hear and feel the thumps inside your head and your ears, and for some reason that seems to reduce the ringing sensation, albeit temporarily. I know that sounds really weird, but it totally works for me and plenty of other people who try it. It comes in handy if you're having flareups or it's keeping you from falling asleep. I always do it just before I lay down in bed or after listening to music. It just helps make flareups more tolerable.

I sometimes worry when people review headphones or earbuds, they say they don’t get loud enough. I literally can barely even handle 75% volume, it starts to just hurts, mostly with earbuds, because the driver is so small. It can’t handle that volume well, so it sounds bad too. Maybe they mean that it’s not loud enough when they sound best? That’s a weird way to phrase it though, they should describe it as distortion. I’m really glad apple implemented a volume limiter into their iOS devices, because a lot of times I’d actually turn the volume up all the way when I meant to change the brightness or swipe away the control center, because I missed the spot just barely, so it would startle me and hurt my ears a little from how loud it is. Plus, it makes me feel better about listening at max volume, if I want to do that, since the max volume is now at that 75% mark that I’m comfortable going up to sometimes

This video & message is so important, most people will give you a strange look if you call them out for ruining their ears. I count my fitted earplugs to my most valuable posessions, best money I've every spent. As a music producer & DJ, my hearing is my income basically, so its even more important to me. But if you think about it, having hearing loss or a tinnitus is not only really annoying, but NOT REPAIRABLE. I think a lot of people don't realize that, at least I didn't for a (too) long time. I could wear my fitted plugs for hours without ever be bothered by it - unlike regular ones, these are designed to not alter the hearing experience, but equally lower all percieved frequencies the same amount. Just as if you would turn down the volume of the outside world. And you still feel the bass - win win situation for me here :D So people, save up for fitted ear protection - your older self will thank you.

I developed mine after taking a high dose of ibuprofen last year (yes, this can cause this in some people). At first it really freaked me out and I was super depressed about it, but several months later I've learned to live with it. I normally don't notice it at all during the day, it's at night when everything is silent that I hear the high pitched ringing. Yea, it's annoying and sometimes distracts me from sleeping so I've learned to leave a fan on to divert my attention from from sound.

I have had tinnitus since 17 - 18 hard to pinpoint when exactly I just noticed it in bed one night, and it seriously built my depression further knowing I will now always have several frequencies of high ringing in my ears (10000hz - 16000hz). 24 now I'm dealing with it, there are things I can do to mask it but, I am genuinely sad I will never hear pure silence again. One of those things you don't miss until it is gone. I can't even enjoy the sounds of nature as much as it gets quieter and my tinnitus gets more overbearing. I don't know about others, but if I don't attempt to mask the ringing and I sit in silence I start experiencing head pain until I turn a fan on or produce physical sound. Please protect your ears!

I hope it will disappear when it gets resolved because I find it more annoying than the high frequency one. Also It's harder to cover up where it matters for me. I've had Tinnitus for a couple years as well. My advice for everyone? Avoid loud music on earphones, especially the ones with noise occlusion. I was torturing my eardrums, and then i would wonder why i had a headache the next day. I have high pitch ringing much like the one showed on the video, it's a bit lower, but not by much. I also had noise sensitivity for at least 2 weeks, the noise of plates would immediatly cause discomfort for me. It got better with time, the ringing is still there though, it never bothers me, i got used to it.

Life saver bro. I'm still 23, Although I am aware of tinnitus, I been listening to music only at full volume since I was 16 - 17 and even today. No prolonged frequency sound or whatsoever. Nor have I experienced it once unless that frequency was being generated from an electronic device in the surrounding. But I have been paranoiac lately: Everytime I hear that whistling sound I assume it's probably my ear getting impaired as I been listening to music too loud from 10 pm to even 6am in my earphones or headsets for a very very long period of time. Having my introverted personality, "I am also that guy who never takes his earbuds off. Playing loud music so he can't listen to no one talking shiit. Or just not wanting people to approach me". But honestly, I can't go a day without the "bloody" earphones. Lol. Now my ears are always tired and seem to never feel at rest no matter what long of a break I take. I'm just happy and fortunately no annoying sound yet. I been thinking it's a myth for no apparent reason. (I guess it's because people say they been listening to music that loud for only a year or two or even less, but I have been doing so for 6-7 years now) so I guessed their problem wouldn't be 100% coming from loud music whatsoever. But when it's not too late yet, I will always remember this video of yours whenever I want to reach for my earphones/headsets, or get in front of my studio monitors. From now on, I will be taking appropriate measures for the best being of my dear ears. Thanks for sharing this emotional videos I was almost in tears as I'm feeling so bad for you and your music experience. I really hope you start getting better and better as the days go by. Being in my mid-30’s, a musician, and an OG 90’s bass head I’ve been taking my hearing as serous as possible the last few years. Clear high SPL has always been my game. I’ve never been clinically diagnosed but I do have intermittent tinnitus in the “white noise” frequency range. Then sometimes I get the high pitched ring out of nowhere. It’s not constant and when it happens I can usually make it go away by actively ignoring it, but I take all of that as a sign to protect my ears more and more as I age.

Also I’d like to say this. It’s a Damn shame that you younger party goers have to resort to wearing ear plugs ( I never have but can only imagine it dampens the experience of listening to loud music somewhat) as if the clubs had the speaker systems set up properly with quality gear you wouldn’t damage your ears. Case in point - the ministry of sound - when in its hay day (mid to late 90’s) the main room sound system was literally awesome. It was so good that you could stand in the middle of the room and feel the bass going through your body yet still be able to speak to the person next you without shouting their ear off. It was like having a warm cuddle of bass, the sound in there was astonishingly good, the system was one of the finest I have ever witnessed - props to the engineers at MoS back then. Quality. The pills were pretty good too.

I don't understand your comment yet. Does sound loudness damage hearing or improper tuning of sound? Did sound system back in your day not damage hearing due to them being set up properly, albeit still loud? Or were they at just the right loudness? Thanks for elaborating.
@WesleyCrushers
3 жыл бұрын
The point is, when you have your system/space set up properly, you don't need to push it so loud, because it sounds amazing and exhilarating even at lower volumes. No need to compensate for lack of quality with quantity. That doesn't mean that if pushed too loud, your ears won't get damaged. Too many decibels and your hearing will suffer no matter the "quality".

I now listen to music half way even if I’m in a loud environment. Especially now that I make music, I mix and master everything on half volume because the lower the general volume is, the louder the mix is when the volume is turned up. Sometimes I would get 7040hz (A8) buzzing in one ear, and A is my favourite note. I used to get that buzzing once a month, but since I started lowering the volume and spend most of my time in silence, it’s been treated fairly. That’s what worked for me; it’ll be different for everybody. It definitely differs if you are a musician/producer or a music listener and the type of headphones you wear. Another factor too is that whenever we make music/beats, we can get carried away with listening to it for hours on end and we can’t get enough of it. Shortening the time that you listen really helps too! I never performed live yet, but now I’m aware of my hearing for when I do!

I would wear earplugs for the louder up tempo stuff, al so stuff that I didn't know as well, but for ballads, and for songs I knew like the back of my hand, I would either pull them halfway out, or pull them all the way out, enjoy the show like that for a while, then when your ears start to feel that like slighty itchy discomfort, just pop em back in for another song or two. That way you can kinda get the best of both worlds I feel. Also they make "flat eq" earplugs, which if you're going to lots of concerts and just want to the the edge off 10-15dB or so, but not lose too much of the high-end, I'd DEFINITELY recommend.

Had tinnitus for as long as I can remember. Not sure what caused it initially, but I had really bad ear infections as a kid. Almost got tubes in my ears. Headphone use and working in NYC for a few years more than likely both contributed as well. A few weeks ago I randomly had a massive Flare up in my right ear, and it was two different tones shifting every few seconds with pressure in my ear. But this felt different, as if it was on top of my usual ringing. It was driving me nuts, I couldn't sleep, I couldn't focus, and after some research I tried to look for causes. I noticed that apparently some people with TMJ experience tinnitus. I noticed that I could force the tones to shift if I opened or closed my mouth so led with that. Went to my dentist, and he confirmed I have TMJ, with my right jaw being worse off, and gave me a night guard. Immediately followed up with an ENT, explained and he prescribed me prednisone for the inflammation in my jaw. It did not help, and I got bad side effects from it. No ear infection either, which also pointed to TMJ being the culprit. Ended up basically having an anxiety attack to the point of needing to go to the ER (I've never had anything like that happen before), in which they did nothing. I completely believe the prednisone made me that way, never taking that stuff again. So I followed up with an inner ear specialist, they ran a hearing test, turns out I have some high frequency loss in my right ear, and she ordered an MRI. She believes it stems from my migraines. Everything came back normal thankfully so that pretty much confirmed to me it was my jaw causing this new type of ring. So I put ice on it for about 20 minutes, and the two tones pretty much went away almost immediately. Hasn't returned, but since then I've had a kind of chirping ring going on. Can't seem to get rid of it, planning on seeing a TMJ specialist and maybe seeing if there's still something there. Still have ringing of course but that nonstop two tone was horrific. Stuff is no joke, take care of your ears, and know that it may be a symptom of another condition.

Yeah others with tinnitus just need to have a better mindset about it, it's all about how you perceive your tinnitus. Mine doesnt bother me, it's just something that's there and sometimes its comforting so I try to focus on it when I'm in an area where a lot of people are talking (which is an uncomfortable sound). The only times when its unpleasant is when I THINK its unpleasant and over focus on it. Your brain will naturally block it out if you start perceiving it as unimportant noise (which you should), just like how you stop feeling your shoe around your foot when you dont think about it.

I have near perfect hearing, just a bit of loss in the lowest frequencies, so I usually don't listen to loud music. In high school, I was in drumline and they made us wear earplugs. While annoying, I'm grateful. Now, I'm putting together a cover band, and I made sure to get earplugs for everyone. They thought I was being silly, but once they heard the drummer in the rehearsal room, they were very grateful. I so still have very occassional tinnitus, I think it was due to my old phone. I would wear headphones, and when I tried to grab my bus pass behind my phone case, it would blast the volume unexpectedly...multiple times -___- If I'm super stressed, it also pops up, but otherwise, I can still hear very well.

Thank you for this. I often listen to loud music in my headphones for sometimes up to an hour on full blast while I’m working out or laying in bed. Its nice to know that I can still listen to loud music , but now I will definitely start giving my ears a break more

I listened so crazily loud on my earphones and headphones for 20 years (starting at around 10) I am astonished my tinnitus isn't a lot worse! I was (and partly of course still am) so additcted to powerful, emotional music that I used to completely turn up the volume while even pushing the plugs with force into my ears! Sometimes in silent rooms I just want to die because of these high noises, knowing they will never go away.

I found out, and became aware, that I had tinnitus like... 4 years ago. It gave me constant panic and anxiety attacks because I was not in control of it, and that was my whole anxiety reason to be... anxious. To not have control. I suffered about 5 months like this and eventually I became used to it. It wasn't easy. In my case I believe it's something biological, not cause by loud sounds. My gf listen to really loud music and I'm hoping your testimony and mine may make her reflect on what she's doing. Thanks for sharing, very instering video

I've had tinnitus for over a decade, most likely due to anxiety from my mental disorders. I hear the high frequency sound in my right ear most of the time and it fluctuates - more stress louder ringing, especially when I have a panic attack its very loud and in both ears 🙃 so the sound you expose yourself to may not even be the cause, depends on the individual

Lol. I thought I had tinnitus. Turns out it’s a weird ass form of pitch recognition. If I hear a noise, I can save it and bring on a type of tinnitus by thinking about it that matches the pitch of that sound. I noticed this when I was going to sleep. I realized depending on what I was thinking of, the tinnitus sound would like change. If I was thinking about nothing, it would just go away. If I didn’t really wanna hear it, it would go away as well. I kinda have this with colours as well thought. If I think about a certain colour, mainly in dark rooms, it looks as thought somebody is flashing a tiny light in that colour within the room…..thought I had laser eyes when I was like 7. Was able to teach my brother how to do it though, so I thing it was some weird illusion brought on with my clock that I had as a kid, that made me expect a red glow, and when I got a new clock, I could still prompt that, and other colours as well. And my brother was able to learn it cuz he was like 5 and stuff. So Yee. It really depends on what actually causes tinnitus. I can’t tell if hearing loss causes nerves to fire weirdly. To absence of a certain sensory input that was once experienced, causes the brain to produce expected information to fill in the gaps. Maybe your one ear experienced a loss of lower frequencies, and that noise is just it trying to fill in an ambient room hum or something that it expected. Just did a quick google search, and yeah. Ambient room noises range from 3-60hz, but average between mainly 40-60…..average those out and you get 50hz. Which is suspiciously close to the 49, you stated at the beginning of the clip. Especially if you grew up in the suburbs and than later moved to an urban environment, it’s almost exactly an average of 50. Now, I didn’t check citations on those claims, and I’m really curious as to how people react to what I just theorized. But, given my experience, it somewhat makes some logical sense.

woah ok seriously, no joke, while I was reading this reply, I suddenly started hearing a tinnitus ring that lasted about 10 seconds. Whenever I get that, usually maybe once every few months it is always brief... Coincidence? I don't know... But when I am in extreme silence, if I really focus I can hear what almost sounds like a super high frequency "searing" noise. Sounds more like its coming from inside my head. It's like seeing... You can see a "film grain". And I have had times where I defocused my eyes and sort of zoned out looking at lights, and the room would get redder and redder until I moved my eyes and refocused. That happened a few times. And sometimes I swear I can smell the thing I am looking at. I think memory, and actual sensory output are closely linked. It isn't sound that is in the air, its just air pressure moving toward you from vibrations. At one point it enters our brain and then an electrical signal converts it into something we can sense. Maybe some people are able to generate these same electrical impulses without sensory input, maybe thought alone, for some, can do this. It might also be related to synesthesia, many people have very mild forms of it. And the latter part of your theory, the filling in the gaps sounds interesting. When humans lose a limb, the body sends signals there which are perceived as pain, it's called a phantom limb. Maybe when the brain sends signals to burnt out receptors in your ear, the damage causes it to be perceived as a ring. Also I have tons of audio and electronic equipment in my room. All give off some frequencies probably. Maybe we are just narrowing in on Frequencies flying around our homes. There must be a broad range of them. But... That ring I just got at the start of reading your comment, that was definitely a ring in my head. That was so weird lol.

@@JunkBondTrader yeaaaah. What tf is that? It’s like, if you defocus in a very specific way, you hear like some weird super high pitched fuzzy sound that like builds, and than like actually fizzles out. Like it sounds like rain on the tail end. It legit sounds like being in a big ass forest during a storm or something. Like a whsssssss and than weird metallic rain or something. Also, I swear nobody is talking about the visual static, and the broken stuff that happens if you decide to zone out a bit. I honestly feel like these are things everybody can/ has done, but either don’t notice, or have no idea how to casually bring it up. Like, “uuuh. My vision looks like when you film in a slightly dark room on an iPhone….but like reaaaallly high Rez. Just, sorta grainy sometimes, if I pay attention to it.” Or like, “if I kinda really zone out, I can make it sound like I’m actually chillin in a forest when it’s windy out….uuuh. Nope. Just me. Ight. Imma head out.” It’s not like normal imagination where it’s like the Lecroix of sensory experience. It’s like an actual thing happening, but it just sounds like it’s coming from your ears and not from your environment. Maybe it’s a calming thing. Like, when you get time to chill, mr ape brain is all like, “ooga booga. Found shelter from fast water cloud.” When, in reality you just zoned out for a few seconds. I’m also wondering if it is something related to creativity. Mainly the observation side of it. If I’m in a new environment, I will casually find myself keeping tabs on everything in the room, so I can figure out where tools are, and so I can also replicate the place later if I wanna draw it. But it just sort of happens regardless, so I’m assuming it’s a means to figure out “what the heck is going on around here”. Since it’s like an automatic thing, maybe I did that when I was a kid with just existing in general and this sorta gave me enough tools to make stuff through rough replication. But also made me notice these sensory glitches in the process. The only reason why I’m sorta stating it might be universal thing is because, they way u described it was eeeezxxactly the same as what I experience. I was pretty vague about it. But yeah. Those were the details. Normally if I hear about synesthesia, it varies more between people. Which makes sense. If it’s based on association, people are different, which makes sense. But if people are different, why are we experiencing the exxxact same things. Super weird.

I was born with a hearing loss, so I never fully understood how I could damage my own hearing more Not that I have, but I did start to realize that I would play music at obscene volumes so I myself could feel what it’s like to have the energy at the expense of my family’s sanity, and when I got hearing aids with Bluetooth connections I’d play at the highest volume because I assume I was never in danger While mostly true, I noticed I would stop listening to music and this inaudible ring would stay for a period of time after and it felt genuinely uncomfortable, so I’d put music back on to void it out. Now, I try to manage and listen to it at a sustainable level to avoid that- thanks for telling people about this man!

i used to use music to cope with outside stress and depression, and i played them so loud to the point my ears would ring. ever since i heard the ringing even though i sit in silence, i researched and that’s when i learned about tinnitus. i tried lowering my volume from then on, but from time to time i would still play them really loud since it was one of my major coping mechanisms. now i’m ending my teen years with high pitched ringing in my ears when i sit in silence. yes there’s regret, but i honestly don’t know how i would’ve coped with it in silence either way. but now i’ve been taking care of ears better, because i realized that once i mess them up, i wouldn’t hear and enjoy music just as i used to lol stay safe and take care of your ears guys ^^

I got my first earplugs nearly 20 years ago. I still have very nearly perfect hearing. Everyone else, all my producing and DJing friends, and even just occasional partygoers, everyone in the same age group as me, even people 7-8 years younger than me, they've all got a LOT of hearing loss. I told them their hearing damage was already setting in, but they wouldn't listen. I'm probably one of those annoying fun busting people. Whether people got smarter? Doubt. Why are the gigs so damn loud? They'd still be super loud if they were 12db softer! How hard would it be for someone to occasionally walk in the crowd with one of those $30 SPL meters, and just check. And i wasn't really fond of the plugs you could get back then all those years ago, they sounded bad. But if you can endure the fit of 3M EAR HiFi, those actually sound good, and the new Alpine PartyPlug sounds kinda mostly OK too. And of course the more things don't sound as they should with them, the more hearing damage you've probably already got, but it's not going to just stop there.

I have some notable high frequency loss in my right ear, and it’s because of two years playing 250+ shows a year in a rock band with a poorly rigged budget in ear setup. I only got monitoring in one ear… the one that can’t hear 14+khz now while the other still goes to 17khz. But, I was always the “bring earplugs to loud shows” guy because I’ve always been sensitive to loud high frequencies, they fatigue my ears quickly even at reasonable volume. I suspect my loss would be waaay worse otherwise. When I monitor my mixes producing, I naturally tend to keep the volume low so that my ears don’t get sick of high frequencies and I start inadvertently *darkening* my mix because I’m annoyed. So I’m grateful high frequencies give me headaches haha, it’s probably helped preserve my ears 🙏

I've been into experimental stuff and harsh/rhythmic noise music for a long time and I even started my own project several years ago. Of course, it basically exists for loud listening. I didn't worry about my hearing much, I got either ringing or low-frequency noises after a gig or a loud listen, but they went away really quickly (and aren't much of a concern if they do). However after one gig it lasted pretty much for the whole day and that's when I decided to buy IEMs for playing gigs and cut down on the volume and/or durations. My hearing is still quite good and I can hear more frequencies than people at my age typically do, but maybe I just got lucky. Not going to risk anymore though.
