Anyways, to the point of the magic of movie theaters - I swear that there's some magic seeing a movie on the big screen. When AMC was showing all the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man movies, it legitimately made me emotional watching them again, even though I've seen them so many times. Do I know the plot by heart? Yes. Did it still cause me to cheer and cry and experience all sorts of other emotions? Absolutely yes. I know for a fact I don't have the same experience watching it at home.

I was born 1980 in the UK & getting to the cinema in time to watch the adverts in the 80's & 90's was essential for most people, much like the American admiration & efforts of Super Bowl ads. They were always funny & exaggerated, & the ad roll would always start & end with a Butterkist ad, with increasingly louder chanting of "Butterkist, Butterkist, Ra-ra-ra!", while there was just a bag of the popcorn being shaken on the big-screen, y'know, to make you want to buy popcorn if you were daft enough to have forgotten to get some already. As a diehard movie goer, you know what I miss? MARATHONS! Or even Double/Triple Features. Nothing beats the hype of joining a crowd who are all so excited to see the same thing on a large scale. My theatre would do Trivia and give out prizes. AMC used to do the Best Picture Showcase where for 2 Saturdays they'd show all the Best Picture Nominees before The Oscars. Even the Star Wars Marathon back in 2015 where they showed I-VII was a blast. They started at 1am, brought free Donuts in the morning, and a concession voucher on top of the trivia. 24 glorious hours. It was a beautiful fan space to get hyped, nap if you need, stretch your legs between each showing. I miss it so much. Since lockdown they're so rare and in select locations. We need them back!

Such an incredible experience, all shared with my 2 best friends, who I'm still good friends with to this day. One of my favorite childhood memories by far. Hey Scott! I started learning ASL (American Sign Language) last year, and it's been incredibly impactful. A member of the Deaf community I have gotten to know is my ASL teacher, who is a movie lover - but something I have learned is how inaccessible movie theatres are for people who are Deaf/ deaf, Hard of Hearing, Neurodivergent, etc. Closed Captioning devices at theatres are incredibly dated or not offered, so members of the aforementioned communities who rely on subtitles can't go to movie theatres; they're forced to wait for it to show up on a streaming service - and then they have to hope the people who make the captions do a good job. Something that could help a whole new community access movies at the theatre: OPEN CAPTIONS! That just means captions on the screen at the bottom of the screen - where everyone can see them. Maybe you can help advocate for a change.

Talking about bad experiences, I had my first really frustrating one on New Years. My family and I used to have a tradition of seeing a movie on New Years Eve as kids before we all got too busy. But I went with my parents to see the new Hunger Games movie with my parents and the experience was ALMOST ruined for me. These obnoxious preteens-teenagers were in the back of the theater (only a third of the way full) and loudly talking and jeering at the movie the whole time. They even through popcorn a few times and kept pelting me in the back of my head, startling me and my reaction would scare the little girl beside me who was already a little scared by the movie. Then when the movie went over midnight, they started taking calls and yelling "Happy New Year" while the movie was still playing. My dad didn't even remember most of the movie but he remembered we saw it when I mentioned it was the one with the teens in the back. That being said, I would still go back. Being in a theater is just more immersive in my opinion. People can come to your door at home or my cats will distract me or any other thing that could possibly happen. And being able to recline in those seats with massive screens and surround sound is better. And I find meeting up with friends to see a movie at a theater much easier to arrange than getting them to come over to your house or vice verse. Honestly, if it wasn't so expensive, I would go for every movie I was ever interrested in. I hope they don't all go out of business.

I have this interesting perspective of marcus theatres. I live in the UK but my wife is from Wisconsin so over the past decade I've been to the local marcus theater about a half dozen times and I LOVE IT. The best thing about it is that for me it makes me nostalgic, it feels like a real cinema. Over here in the UK a lot of cinemas now are within malls or retail park areas, they're cold, lifeless and have no soul. Marcus theaters are the complete opposite. They just give you a cinema feeling. And don't get me started on the chairs. My life hasn't been the same since. Anytime i go to the cinema in the Uk it feels like a total waste 😂 i just end up sitting there like a squashed sardine wishing i was 3000+ miles away. Plus the price, $5 Tuesday??? Unmatched.

When I saw the bee movie in middle school, at the end when the bees win their court case a guy stood up in the back of the theater and yelled “YEAH! GO BEES!” and now everytime I see a movie in theaters I lean over and whisper it to whoever I’m there with when the movies main plot is resolved

W video Scott. I think that being in a theatre with family/friends is way better than just sitting at home, you dont get the full experience that way. One thing I always think of when people say theaters are not as good anymore and theyd rather watch on a streaming service is Spider-Man: No Way Home, i will never forget the experience of everyone in the theatre yelling when all 3 Spidermen came on screen together, at home youll never feel that.

My problem with theaters is that EVERYONE talks and uses their phone. I swear it used to be like 1-10% of people that did that. Now it’s at minimum 50% of people and 90% of showtimes for movies I’ve been to. Obviously the theaters are rundown as well, but I can deal with that, as it’s due to a lack of money.

I'm a movie theater enthusiast too! I just saw The Fellowship of the Ring again in theaters and it was so magical, it was like being a kid again. I can't imagine not seeing Dune (both parts) in theaters. There is just something so special to me about the theater experience. It lets you disappear into a movie in a way that not even a good home theater can. It makes me sad that people are dunking on the movie theater experience. I get the points about the prices, especially with literally everything being so expensive right now but the experience itself is still worthwhile, imo.

Here's the thing, Scott. 40$ to go see Godzilla X Kong, 30$ for a drink for me, popcorn and M&M's for her. It's too expensive. I love the movies. It's a special experience. But it's too expensive now. I can't spend that much money on a singular experience when regularly, interesting films are coming out more and more.

You’re not required to buy concessions (bring them with you if you must have them), and most theatres have some kind of rewards program now. AMC A-List, for instance, lets you see three movies a week for $20 a month.

Going to the movies is definitely one of my favorite things to do. The magic of the big screen and the emotions, is just amazing. I keep all my tickets too, the oldest one is for Star Wars Episode III. Growing up it was such a fun thing for us to do, but we couldn't afford snacks really. Now I have adult money and I treat my parents to all the snacks if they want :)

One of the best movies ever at the theater is Cloverfield. It's just a completely different experience as it's shot in the first person and with surround sound it just FEELS like you're there. I imagine Hardcore Harry is probably like this as well. Also now that you're a dad, you too will soon acquire the ability to sleep anywhere under any conditions. Nothing can prevent you from taking a nap. Nothing.

I love movie theaters. Granted, I feel it should be a special occasion. If you want to watch a new movie every weekend, I'd advise just staying home and watching it online. I know if I went to watch a new movie every week or even just every month, I'd probably get tired of movie theaters really damn fast. But to a person who only goes there once or maybe twice a year, it's an absolutely treat.

I don’t know who Greg Marcus is, but my favorite theater experience was when I saw “The Waterboy” in high school. The theater was FULL! Nearly everyone from high school was there. We all laughed together at the same parts, and the next Monday at school we were quoting the movie to each other (“Gatorade…”) It was an absolute blast! 💥

I might be weird for that but I genuinely love that you can't pause a movie. Sometimes I purposefully force myself to not pause a movie while I'm watching it at home. It makes watching a movie feel like a more immersive experience, like you're actually witnessing someone's story. You're gonna have some pieces missing because you also live your own life you know. + It's fun having to figure out what you miss and it makes you want to watch the movie again to see if what you missed changes the movie. It also forces you to pay more attention to what is said next in case you missed bits in information that could be repeated again but in more subtle ways. Also there's movies where you'll lose 15 minutes doing things and the movie is still doing the exact same thing. It's a great way to already know, that movie is probably gonna be repetitive and boring.

Going to the movies is a great way to do something with others. It is a magical experence. My grandfather owned several theaters back in the 50's to the 90's. I loved going to the movies. It would be tragic if people isolated them selves from others even more than they already do. Of course, the movies need to offer something worth watching. Lately it is hard to find a movie worth watching.

In AZ the equivalent of Greg Marcus is Michael Pollack. We went to the Pollack Tempe Cinemas several times growing up because they had discounted prices, but the best part was that he has a huge collection of life-size figurines of celebrities and movie characters lining the hallways.
