When I bought my first block plane (late 2022), I very quickly realized that most people who use hand planes probably have some sort of vise with which to hold their workpiece while they use the hand plane. I found a very inexpensive, easy workaround -- putting two nuts on my work table. The pressure of the plane holds the workpiece against the nuts so the board doesn't fly off.
It's not perfect, but it's easy and cheap if you don't hand-plane very often.
NOTE: the footage of the work table is from Dec. 2022. I didn't get around to narrating it until a year later.
