Some of the Muslims (and Christians) in the comments of this video are upset that I had an Ismaili on to give an overview of Islam. In case you didn't know, Ismailis are a minority denomination within Islam (they account for less than 1% of all Muslims). Moreover, many Muslims believe that Ismaili's are heretics. Why have a heretic on to explain Islam? A couple thoughts. First, the point of this video wasn't to promote any particular branch of Islam. The point of the video was to outline the basic tenets of Islam. Anyone sufficiently educated in Islam could have served this purpose (including an atheist). I chose Dr. Andani because he's an expert in Islam, is a gifted communicator, and teaches students for a living on this very subject. His denominational background does not determine his ability to explain Islamic belief. Second, this complaint is nothing more than an ad hominem. Even if it's true that Dr. Andani is a heretic (something he vehemently denies), it doesn't follow that any of the information he actually presented in this video is inaccurate. This is similar to folks that only listen to overweight chefs. Just because a chef is skinny, that doesn't mean that you can't learn how to cook tasty food from them. Lastly, I want to say that, as Christians, we ought to be engaging with the best that our religious (and non-religious) peers have to offer. Just like there are more plausible and sophisticated forms of Christianity, the same is true for Islam. I had a great time recording with Dr. Andani and learned quite a number of things throughout his presentation. We're currently developing ideas for future streams where we take a look at the theological inconsistencies of the most popular Dawah bros. That should be a lot of fun!

Wow... Hello Capturing Christianity and your comments are excellent. One individual in the comments basically said " are you ready to burn in hell" !! All because of your invitation to Dr. Andani. I have no problem with your inviting various scholars on your channel ( be they Muslim, or Catholic or atheist). As long as the discussion is fairly respectful. I've watched other channels where the participants are very judgemental and seemingly hate people of other religions. I "turn away and run" from those channels. I know that Jesus was sometimes confrontational with individuals. But Jesus could perceive the intentions of the heart. We usually can't do that. Anyhow... However, the presentation becomes more accurate and I like his take on the evolution of Islam from a puritanical movement into a confessional religion by the 9th century. I think this goes accurately with the new scholarship on the origins of Islam. One major disagreement I have with his interpretation that the Quran represents Muhammad preaching . Some elements of the Quran seems older than Muhammad and may be a Christian heretical hymns (for ex Sura 97 which modern Muslims believe it refers to the Quran while some linguists believe it is a Christian hymn ) … also Khalil doesn’t incorporate the findings of Ahmed al-Jallad who recently argues that new discovered inscriptions point that Arabia was already monotheistic two centuries before Islam thus contradicting the Islamic narrative that paints Arabia as pagan (Islamic narratives about Muhammad was written close to 200 years after his death). @@johnbrzykcy3076 they hide and/or try to reject authentic Islamic sources because those are embarrassing. For example, Muhammad married to Aisha when she was just 6 and had sexual relationship with her when she was 9. He was 54. Muslims try to hide that because that would make Islam "look bad". He also had and traded black and white slaves, and he had sex slaves. He also went flying to Jerusalem on a "flying donkey" (yes, flying donkey, with a human face 👨). He also said the sun sets in a murky spring. Hr also said the devil/Satan pees on people's ears and noses and even farts. Islam commands Muslims to dominate the whole world, and that can only be achieved by force. Muslims don't care if you actually believe in Islam; they just want you to convert so that everyone is a Muslim. Muhammad himself would ask people to convert even if they didn't like Islam, and he would also bribe them (with money, sheep, donkey). Islam allows pedophilia, bestiality and even prostitution. I think you can understand how bad all that sounds. Muslims don't want you to know about those things.

You’re doing a brilliant job, Doctor Kha Andani! So necessary. Especially on this particular channel - KZitem. Radical perspectives, which can transform into intolerance and violent forms of expressions of faith take root exactly from social media, and mostly through KZitem. So,It’s critical that in secular modern societies where school textbooks still do not address Islam as they should, that people just as informed as you are, and as academically accredited as you, come forwards with alternative ways of learning about Islam. From there, when “truth” is explained by some, individuals, especially youngsters who are attracted to Islam, they can critically and, hopefully constructively, ask questions. I’m a firm believer that more than having answers, it’s important to ask questions, and that space for conversation about Islam and Muslims needs to be available on KZitem.

A Muslim would say that they respect and believe in the Jewish Scriptures, but, what they won’t say unless you press them is that they don’t believe that any Jew or Christian has a correct translation of those Old Testament Scriptures. They would argue that we have imperfect translations because if we had correct translations then those scriptures would match the Quran. Wow. How can you have a reasonable discussion with them when they believe that? Ask them yourselves. Also, textually, the Quran is an amalgamation of Judaism and Nestorian Christianity. The Quran confuses Miriam (Moses’ sister) with Mary, the Mother of Jesus. It has Nestorian errors in it, too. Islam contradicts the Divine Revelation already given to the Jews and its fulfillment, Christianity. They deny that Jesus is The Prophet, the Son of God. The Quran has similarities to the Bible because Mohammed used them to write the Quran.

@warriorgoat5939 The Quran has similarities to the Bible "because Mohammed used them to write the Quran"... Muhammad did not write the Qur'an. It (all the liturgical stuff) was already written by monks, poets in Syro-Palestine. Now, the parts of the Qur'an that deals with "guidance" for the new community of believers, ie quasi-laws, would have been written down during and after Muhammad's lifetime by this preacher or that preacher. "Muhammad" is a filler for all this. We must be mindful of the use of the name "Muhammad" when it comes to the production of the text of the Qur'an. I hope I was clear.

@@paulthomas281 Thank you for this correction. The Quran wasn’t “written” by Mohammed. But, the claims are that they are the quotations that the angel spoke to him from God during 23 years of his life. It is claimed that the Quran is the Word of God. Yes, men wrote the quotes and sayings of Mohammed down into the Quran later. My point is that any basic critical textual analysis show that Mohammed’s quotes or what the men later purported that he said was obviously, at least in parts, from the two great religions already in existence, Judaism and Christianity. There is no claim by Mohammed that the quotes came from texts that he read or had before (supposedly he was illiterate). It just so happens that it looks very similar to the two religions that he would’ve been in contact with in his life. That’s why there are similarities. He didn’t just borrow from the Jewish and Christian Scriptures. He also borrowed from some of the pagan religions of the area. If Muslims believe that Jesus was a prophet, then why did Jesus use and quote from the Septuagint and Masoretic texts that we still have today that support the Jewish faith and contradict the Quran. The Jewish scribes are meticulous is transcribing the scriptures word for word throughout every generation. The Qumran findings verified that the translations of the Jewish scriptures of the first century Essenes matched the texts used today by the Jews and Christians. If the Muslims believe Jesus was a prophet, why wouldn’t Jesus have corrected erroneous translations in his day? Muslims can’t historically have it both ways. My original point stands - Muslims say Jesus was from God and the Jewish and Christian Scriptures (which have obvious contradictions with the Quran) are from God. BUT, they won’t tell you unless you push them that they don’t believe any modern Jewish or Christian Scriptures are valid because they have been corrupted, they believe. If they weren’t corrupted, they claim, they would match the Quran’s theology. This hidden belief was told to me by a Muslim convert to Christianity. The Jewish and Christian Scriptures can’t be correct AND the Quran (of course religious Jews don’t believe in the Christian New Testament/Scriotures either). So, my point is - don’t be fooled by a Muslim who acts like Jews and Christians are just Muslims who need correcting. Either God revealed His Word to the Jewish prophets and Jesus OR only to Mohammed. God can’t contradict Himself. I believe Mohammed created a religion to unify the pagans and people of his race to antagonize the Jews and Christians. It’s an imitation of what came before. That’s why it “looks” textually and theologically “similar.” A good Muslim will follow what their leader did, Mohammed used the sword/violence to force conversions or death to unite the diverse tribes of his area. You might bring up religious violence by Jews and Christians in history. But, I would simply look at the founder’s actions himself. Good Muslims following the entire Quran are obliged to physical war against the non-believer (Infidel). Jesus never promoted violence. Christians who follow their leader are obliged to conquer the world for God by love and grace. Huge difference.

Everywhere we look on the world, if Islam is the predominant cultural influence we find oppression. This oppression doesn’t exist through dumb luck or happenstance. In part this oppression exists because of the oppressive nature of Islam. The guest in the video spoke a lot about mercy and empathy. We can examine the Quran or Hadith to make a judgement on the merciful nature of islam. However, we can also look at the life of Muhammad and ask if he was merciful and empathic. If we look at the historical Muhammad we find a racist, a war criminal, a murder, robber, a person engaging in ethic cleansing, a slaver, a rapist, a pervert. Yes, Muslims can point to some good deeds or statements of Muhammad this doesn’t resolve his war crimes. Cameron, I was waiting for you to strap on your inner journalist. When Dr. Andani said that the Qu’ran was written within 20 years of the death of Muhammad, I was waiting for you to ask, “How long after the original writing is our first manuscript?” I get that you wanted to have a perspective on Islam “from the horse’s mouth” so to speak, I was waiting for you to challenge at least some of the perspectives. I am surprised there was no pushback on Dr. Andani’s suggestion that he could approach an academic discussion without bias! Is this really possible?
@KhalilAndani
Жыл бұрын
That’s a nice straw man. I never said academics are without bias. I said nobody can be neutral. But academics with respect to a religion aspire to be neutral. Second i cited two studies that conclude on the basis of first century Quranic manuscripts that the archetype text of the Quran dates to the 650s. If he had pushed back I can easily defend what I said because I’m grounded in scholarship not polemics.
@davidpdiaz
Жыл бұрын
@@KhalilAndani Unfortunately, I never set up a straw man. The fact of the matter is that all people, including scientists, and even you, are influenced by your worldview. Such biases represent the potential for skewing not only the conclusions of scientific research but also the framing of the research itself. For example, the sources researchers have read and referenced (or not read and not referenced) in the process of completing their review of literature will dictate how the study is framed, designed, and conducted. This naturally leads to the following question: “Has the process of searching out, reading, and selecting these sources been influenced by prior beliefs and biases?” This is a legitimate question that may have an impact on the methods, procedures, data, and conclusions of the study. When conducting their review of literature, scientists often choose to read only (or predominantly) studies that agree with their own bias. This may affect how they choose what sources will be added to or left out of their final report or viewpoint. Furthermore, this type of selection bias may be completely invisible to the person conducting the research. He or she may not be aware that their bias is influencing critical decisions in the research process. Hopefully, the peer-review process identifies these biases so as to suggest changes in design or otherwise control potentially negative influence on the research, but that is not always the case. I believe that you may aspire to be neutral. However, there is always bias present in research. The way you phrased your discussion of 'neutrality' led the viewer (at least this viewer) to think that you had bias under control. It may be true, but your representation of it was lacking sufficient explanation.

What I noted is that bias is rampant in research and most likely affects everyone, including you. One's interpretation of the literature is typically heavily influenced by their worldview. You played this down to the viewer, and I think you could have handled this much differently. Bias is more evident in historical studies than you let on when talking about 'neutrality'.

Excellent observations ! I don't even like the word "religion" so when Muslims say it's the true religion, I usually ask myself, " what is Truth?" From my understanding, the absolute truth is not necessarily a "religion" but God Himself. I'm just a simple Christian believer so I usually don't know how to respond to a questioning Muslim. Usually the doctrine of the "Trinity" is the first question. I think a reasonable answer is that God is a loving God and His characteristic of Agape love is eternally evident in the relationship of God the Father and Jesus the Son. I appreciate your comments. @@johnbrzykcy3076 Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. This is how God’s love was revealed among us: God sent His one and only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him. And love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as the atoning sacrificed for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God remains in us, and His love is perfected in us. By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit. And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. And we have come to know and believe the love that God has for us. God is love; whoever abides in love abides in God, and God in him. In this way, love has been perfected among us, so that we may have confidence on the day of judgment; for in this world we are just like Him. There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear involves punishment. The one who fears has not been perfected in love. We love because He first loved us. If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen. And we have this commandment from Him: Whoever loves God must love his brother as well. 1 John 4:7-21

Overall, a fine interview and presentation. However, about 50:00 in, Cameron described Muhammad’s intent as something similar to the Protestant REFORMATION and Dr. Andani instantly conflated the concept of REFORMATION with RESTORATION. Respectfully, this is very misleading in the grander scheme of things. For a movement to be a “reformation,” that would mean it acknowledges that the true and primitive form of a tradition is still retained within the tradition itself and has simply become convoluted to the point of obscurity and even disagreement. “Reformation” is simply an effort to keep tradition in check and in agreement with Holy Writ. On the other hand, for a movement to be a “restoration,” that would require a movement to operate under the assumption of corruption of the preceding tradition(s). A “restoration” really does believe the true and primitive form of a tradition has been lost and forgotten and needs to be put back together. Even if the historical Muhammad believed more in reformation [and I do not believe he did], the Islamic Caliphate that followed him CLEARLY believed it was a restoration of true and primitive monotheism. This is called the doctrine of Al-tahrif. So, be careful to not conflate terms for the sake of critical empathy.

Al Rahman can't be equated with Agape, the reason why we can say that God is essentially an Agapic self giving love essentially it's because of the notion of the most Holy Trinity, it is in the essence of God to give himself to himself through his three hypostasis or persons, because the Father gives himself fully and perfeclty to the Son is that he begets him eternaly, and the Son Gives himself to the Father perfectly and eternaly so that from both is the Holy Spirit proceding eternally, and the Holy Spirit gives himself to the Father and the Son perfectly and eternally and the three of them are not three but one God. For that reason we can say that God is Agape because it is the very essence of who he is to give himself to another, that's why he creates in order to be participated, and he can be participated because he primordially gives himself to another. In Islam you don't have that trinitarian theology that supports God as Agape, that's why many Christians don't buy the notion of the God of Muhammad as loving or merciful.

I like your scholarly and biblically based reasoning. When I listen to any Islamic channel, the greatest percentage of comments are focused on the doctrine of "Trinity" in Christianity. I've never read the Quran but from listening to Quranic verses, they simply don't compare to the " Agapic self giving love" that is evident between God the Father and Jesus the Son. Thanks again. This is similar to the beliefs of Swami Vivekananda and Mahatma Gandhi. "My idea, therefore, is that all these religions are different forces in the economy of God, working for the good of mankind; and that not one can become dead, not one can be killed. Just as you cannot kill any force in nature, so you cannot kill any one of these spiritual forces. You have seen that each religion is living. From time to time it may retrograde or go forward. At one time, it may be shorn of a good many of its trappings; at another time it may be covered with all sorts of trappings; but all the same, the soul is ever there, it can never be lost. The ideal which every religion represents is never lost, and so every religion is intelligently on the march. And that universal religion about which philosophers and others have dreamed in every country already exists. It is here. As the universal brotherhood of man is already existing, so also is universal religion. Which of you, that have traveled far and wide, have not found brothers and sisters in every nation? I have found them all over the world" -Collected Works of Swami Vivekananda, II, pp. 366-67 "Religions are different roads converging to the same point. What does it matter that we take different roads, so long as we reach the same goal? In reality, there are as many religions as there are individuals."
