He's pretty sharp for only having three or four years of experience. He just finished the apprenticeship program and he's been working with some of the other guys too they just did one of these jobs.

I know it mentioned before that the push pull wasnt setup correctly, and its been explained already on here..but if you have a running compressor theres a faster way with the push pull,by using the compressor as the " recovery unit".. Hook liquid line of machine to liquid inlet of tank, the vapour of tank goes into suction line ofthe running machine, and hey presto yiu ll have full liquid recovery , real fast, make sure to keep eye on scales as tank can fill real quick, and sometimes generates static on the tank, so bond the tank to the machine, i use a jump lead ..😂.. this method xan be setup real quick and gets most of the liquid out, usually the machine trips on low pressure , indicating most of the easily available liquid has been recovered..then its standard recovery..ive used this on screws, recips etc... remove cores obviously..great videos, one of the most knowledgeable techs on the internet hands down...nice work Rick...👍👍

Build a mini gantry with strut and get a 4 wheel trolly. One end is set in the van and the other outside on the ground. I’d recommend using a tail pipe cutter for those tight spots.

Seeing The amount of refrigerant reminds me of the early days in the business; pre EPA. Hook up the hosees and wrap the outlet hose with a towel to help with the oil and just vent away. We did a few high capacity refrigeration burn outs with around two hundred pounds of total refrigerant. Now seems crazy after all these years.😂

I go with two recovery tanks on big systems, I go directly from the liquid line to tank one, out of tank one to the recovery unit, to tank two.

I wouldn’t get to worried about a few metal filings, everyone goes wild when they see someone cut or drill a line, guys, there are screens in txv’s, filter dryers and if they get to the compressor they collect in the dump.. Be cautious yes, be worried no.

I know, usually I see the guys using sawzalls. But I have a lot of people that never see this stuff and even me when I first started doing the bigger stuff flipped out. 9 years after doing the larger stuff and with a total of 28 years, I realize it really doesn't matter as much. But portraying that on video for the world to see is a lot harder. Thanks for the feedback!

seeing the missing "can keys", for the tough to open ones you can wind the peel tab around pliers, same as the old twist key would do vs. brute force yanking it. that looked pretty easy to open though.

One thing I hate about these compressors is that the oil equaliser pipe is behind , which depending on the equipment OEM can make it really touch to access.

I'll admit I don't understand what push-pull recovery helps with (haven't researched it at all), though I can say the manual for your recovery machine comes with a nice diagram to set it up. (I have the same machine.) It will be interesting to see where the leak turns out to be, if it is revealed in part 2.

more or less, it's a way to recover the liquid refrigerant, while keeping it in liquid state, you're basically keeping the system standing pressure high enough, so it doesn't all want to turn to vapor/gas and take days to recover. probably not the best explanation by far, I'm sure not a teacher. 🤡

Basically you'd want to pump the system down, connect the receiver to the recovery cylinder liquid port, then pull out of the vapour port on the recovery cylinder with your recovery machine and dump the high pressure gas into the systems compressor discharge connection. High pressure in the condenser pushes the liquid out of the system, lower pressure in the cylinder pulls the liquid in. Once all the liquid is out of the system you need to reconfigure your hoses to pull the remaining vapour out of the system.

In a push/pull you are using refrigerant vapor to push the liquid refrigerant out of the unit and into the recovery tank, since you are pulling vapor from the recovery tank using the recovery machine, the pressure inside the tank will be lower than the pressure in the unit you are servicing, thus moving the liquid by virtue of pressure differential. Now push/pull is only worth it in large equipment with flooded evaporators where you can recover big amount of liquid refrigerant, DX equipment push pull is a complete waste of time as he found out. Push pull creates a pressure differential between the recovery tank and the unit being serviced, once there is no more liquid in the unit, then a conventional gas recovery is done, but since there is no liquid inside the unit, pressure should drop fast. One way to tell that you push pull was not complete, is that when you move to your vapor recovery stage, the pressure will not come down, meaning you are burning liquid (flashing liquid).

I think the push pull recovery method probably only works if you can pull liquid from the equipment, if you're pulling vapor into the recovery tank it's not going to condense there (or not much anyway), any refrigerant that condenses through the recovery machine will just boil off in the unit to get pulled back through the tank as vapor? I'm not an expert but that's my thinking.

No you're correct, it was low 40 lb but at the time I didn't know that, that's why I left it in there but didn't mention it later because it all comes to realization after being completed. But not at the time of recording.

yeah, it needs to be fully charged and at resting pressure for whatever gas type it is and maintained at that pressure or you'll end up flashing it into vapor and pumping that in a big circle. the pitfalls of a low system. 🤔

I assume you're referring to the condenser fan speed? The inside is water transfer only. What are you trying to find out with the fan speed? Compressors were shorted to ground, my super heat was fine coming back to the compressors, and my head pressure was normal for the ambient that I was working in?

I'm assuming they were running hot since they are discolored and usually I seen these with vfds has one where they would not ramp up fast enough when loaded causing them to run hot and not trip the hp but enough to cook some oil In this instant id change out the oil entirely and check to make sure that common suction is pitched towards compressors to help bring back oil I've seen tons of comp burnouts and it's always oil

The hardest part on those aqua snaps are those oil gaskets and nut on the back of the compressors to me there the easiest air cooled chillers to work on

What’s your tip to soldering those bad boys in, I had a hard time once on the same compressors ended up having to use blue tip ( 45% silver ) to get the compressor soldered in!

That's a micro rosebud tip right there. It makes it pretty simple, The main thing is heating up your male fitting going into the compressor first and working your way into the fitting.

Worked on many many AquCrap's, buy a new board and have them install updated software. Problems will decrease dramatically. (superheat control issue) One site with 150 ton, 6 compressors, changed 9 of them. New software, no more failures.

Glad i'm not the only one who refers to them as AquaCraps. Once i saw he was carrying out two Maneurops i thought it had to be an aquacrap. Those things are quite solid otherwise. Fortunately i only have to take care of four of them, swapped out two compressors last year. I know of another installation which has eight dual compressor water/water aquacraps. Last time i checked in with them six were out of service.

Cooling water used to keep the machinery inside cool. It can cool either welders, punch presses I forget what this one was hooked up to, I was technically they're back in December so it's been almost seven flipping months

There was oil in there it just wasn't high enough to come out. Yeah I believe it was in the system it wouldn't have gone anywhere else cuz I didn't see anything on the ground.

I actually picked up a cutter that can do from quarter inch up a 2 and 3/8 called the wheeler-rex model number 4992. Made in the USA and should get into some of these tight spots one of the few hours mentioned it. Very expensive but I needed to spend my tool Money anyway

I'm gonna guess the reason the push pull method didn't work is because you're not getting liquid off of that discharge line you're just pushing vapor and sucking vapor if you were able to get tapped on to an actual liquid line it might have worked I've never done it myself but that's my guess

Danfoss Manurope Performa scroll probably 15 to 20 HP scrolls found them to be not that reliable compared to Copeland scroll compressors and they are very expensive to buy even back in the day !!! There's a part in them that breaks easy apparently and thats probably the reason???

The scroll compressor was perfected by Copeland. It’s a closely guarded secret on how they make it even though the other ones are making it the same style. Obviously, there’s a difference.

Please look for the conditions for using the "push and pull" recovery method and how to do it. Unfortunately your stetting can´t work. You "Recover" from the condenser to the evaporator if you push liquid into the suction line. The Method just works with liquid refrigerant in the system and left vapor in the system, so you have to change the setting for full recovery. Liquid from the System pushed into the recovery cylinder. The vapor over the liquid is pushed to the recovery unit an is compressed to hot gas vapor. This vapor with higher pressure is used to to increase the pressure above the liquid in the system and push the liquid into the recovery cylinder. The compressor of the recovery unit ensures a lower pressure in the recovery cylinder compared to the system. If your compressor is not working, the refrigerant is liquid at the coldest point of the system (sometimes in the evaporator), unless it is pumped out into the receiver beforehand.

7:10 Get yourself an oscillating cutting tool, with a carbide blade for metal. Cut the pipe FLUSH with the compressor as close to the blue paint as you can. Then you can then REMOVE the compressor and UNSWEAT the fitting and keep the pipe in tact. Ive done this three times with YORK tandem compressors, same thing.The shavings should be minimal and can be wiped out with a rag or your finger. They dont make it easy to do, unfortunately but those Olscillating Multi tools are a life saver on many jobs and well worth keeping on your truck. HOWEVER I think your method is best by ordering the pipes from the OEM and making those connectings with couplings and clean copper... Cant make those bends easily in the field.

I purchased a special close quarters cutter that was recommended by a viewer in the comments. It cuts up to 2.5" if I remember correctly. But what your saying makes sense.

I think you still did a good job, because it might not be your fault on the leak, because like you said the factory charge was low, so it could be leaking in the line set or evaporator or valves, you might have to put some refrigerant in the system to find the leak, Is that Clayton sporting the beard? He looks like an old man country boy now.

Well. Looks like they did have pretty good starting/protection components, so undervoltage or single phasing shouldn’t be happening. Too high of a compressor superheat, or refrigerant migration causing inter winding shorts/low insulation resistance. Low evap. superheat, especially for chillers, is usual suspect. Like I said in my other comment - these are little more forgiving on liquid slugging, but too much of liquid refrigerant in the winding is detrimental.

I believe that was oil from bleeding the hose

Should have come off the liquid line for your push pull, not discharge. There HAS to be liquid at the gauge port where you attach your hose from the system to the tank. Discharge line almost never has liquid sitting in it. Best thing is to set it up to “push” through the evap, into suction and out of liquid line. If you have LLSV’s, after that you can “push” into the discharge and come off your liquid line into the tank. Once all the liquid is out, you have to switch to regular recovery. I recovered 100lbs of liquid in 15 and a half minutes, and the last 18 pounds of vapor took another hour.

That would make more sense. That's why I kept checking the diagram but with that being 40 lb low on refrigerant I don't know how much liquid would have been left

Before replace the new compressor must be flush the system and replace the new magnetic contactor

How much chiller work do you do? You're not going to flush this system. And 90% of the time that flushes is a bunch of garbage. And the contactors were replaced, I believe I mentioned that in the video but nobody listens or watches the whole video so that's probably why you didn't notice it.

Great work Rick! I have a question about the Inficon d-tek 3 leak detector. I bought one almost 3 years ago after I saw your video about it. It was the best leak detector I ever owned up until a couple months ago. Now when I turn it on and wait for it to warm up, it will run fine for about 60 seconds and then it starts going off in clean air. Only one of the green lights on top will flash but it will make its way from the first or second light all the way to the last light on the right. I’ve replaced the filter and just today I bought a new sensor and installed it but it’s still doing the same thing. Battery is fully charged and the pump is working. Any idea what it could be? I tried calling Inficon but I haven’t been able to talk to anyone. I bought it through Tru Tech Tools so I’m not sure if I can send it in to be calibrated or what. Just figured I’d try asking you first since I know you have a lot of experience with Inficon. I absolutely loved the leak detector until it started acting up and I just want it to start working like it did before. I’m hoping I don’t have to drop over $500 for a new one!

I actually was having problems with my Stratus yesterday with the pump motor, luckily I have my dtech 3 as a backup. I wonder if the pump is acting up on yours ? I think it's replaceable. Call tru tech tools, they're supposed to give us good support and find out what they can do for you. I'm trying to get a hold of my guy at inficon I haven't heard back from him yet.

Thanks for getting back with me so quick! I actually called Tru Tech this morning on the way to my first call. I was on hold for almost 30 minutes and then the call got disconnected, very frustrating. I called back and left a message so hopefully I’ll get a response sometime today.

My guy at inficon said check the probe make sure it's not something plugging it up. Otherwise let me know if true tech doesn't come through for you

I checked it’s not plugged. I was hoping it would be something simple like that. I did put a new filter in the tip, gave the battery a full charge and changed the sensor but it’s still messing up. It actually still detects refrigerant I cracked a tank this morning and it did start going off faster. The problem is, once it warms up and runs for about a minute it starts going off in clean air with no refrigerant present. I’ve tried it inside my house, my van and several other places but every time it does the same thing. It warms up and then just starts going off. I got a hold of Tru Tech today and they said there’s nothing they can do because it’s out of warranty. He gave me Inficon’s number and I spoke to a woman from there today. She said I may have gotten water down the tip and messed up the circuit board. She said I can take it to United Refrigeration and they’ll ship it off to get fixed. I’m not sure how much it’s going to cost but that might be my only option since it’s almost 3 years old and the warranty is only for 2 unfortunately

I didn’t bring it to United today but I did call them and they said if I pay shipping both ways and the cost of the repair, they will get it fixed for me. I may not have a choice. I’m back to using an older Fieldpiece heated diode detector and that thing sucks. It gives so many false hits that I just can’t trust it. I always try to verify with Big Blu but sometimes it’s in a spot where you can’t.

Do you use the red Loctite for refrigerant? That’s also a Sealant when you put your brass threaded refrigerant ports in the top of the aluminum plate of the filter shell housing?

I've never had to use loctite on them. If I had issues with vibration having them come undone sure.

Those supposed to be more resilient against slugging. But track record doesn’t support that about those Euro Danfoss wonders.

They are quite solid. But for some reason not when installed in carrier units. Before getting to take care of a bunch of aquacraps i only ever had one fail in my 17 years of hvac.
