There's something satisfyingly... Human... about people who feed their passions and devote their lives to nutrition. If Patrick was Queen of the World, she would become beloved for making the world believe she cares about them. Imagine her traveling the world and teaching the populations how to become healthier. it's a gift that might as well mean to say "You're worth it. You're worth taking better care of yourself." I swear there's a latent potential in her to be a great figure in history. If I'm biased for not saying the same thing of Harris, and many others like him, yeah you're right I'm being politically correct. The world is ready to listen to a voice like Patrick's. At one time I was eating three cans of sardines a week. My omega three index was right around 8 but my mercury levels were high. I stopped eating fish altogether and started eating walnuts and flaxseed thinking those will help but my omega o3 index dropped to like 5.32 and epa level was barely above the lower reference limit. Then I started taking fish oil capsules (800mg epa and 600mg dha), o3 index went up to 11.37 after taking the fish oil for about 6 weeks. Now I’m taking 900mg EPA and 300mg DHA. Will test again after 6 months. Apparently I need more EPA. Also since EPA can be converted to DHA as needed, I think the higher epa is needed in my case.

Great interview! Omega-3 is good for lowering TG's but higher doses can increase LDL (due to DHA) but the EPA does not do this. Walnuts and other nuts contain another form ALA (that gets converted mainly to EPA & tiny amt to DHA) and reduces total LDL particles by 4.3% and also decreases TGs by a small amount. In March 2022, researchers found that consuming ALA in walnuts and flaxseeds etc was associated with a 10% lower risk of cardiovascular disease and a 20% reduced risk of fatal coronary heart disease. 1 regular fish oil capsule/day is ok but I would not overdo it. You can decrease CVS issues with just nuts and certain seeds. For weight loss I would stick with fish and some nuts

Although some Alaskan people are ok with the term, we Canadians still prefer other terms, at least in my town(former)and my family. The most widely used is term to replace it is Inuit. I’m not trying to correct the individual using the term Eskimo, only saying that it’s offensive to many and distracts from the excellent info contained within this episode. I hesitated to mention this only because I’m fairly sure Dr. Harris is aware of the controversy around the term Eskimo and chooses to use it anyway, perhaps because when he was conducting his studies the term was still widely used. 1:01:10 Is the information shown at the bottom of the screen about Lp-PLA2 really correct? I thought Lp-PLA2 plays a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis and as predictive biomarker for future cardiovascular events. Lp-PLA2 is a vascular-specific marker of inflammation. The correlation of Lp-PLA2 with atherogenic risk is even greater considering that it is secreted by the macrophages of the atherosclerotic plaques and may well represent the transition to plaque instability. During inflammation of the arterial wall, Lp-PLA2 protein is localized within the plaque in high concentrations.

If we're going to genetically modify plants to create EPA or DHA, why not SDA (stearidonic acid). There are already plants like Hemp that naturally contain SDA, and it is easier to convert to EPA than ALA. It's conversion is better than ALA because it doesn't need to be converted by delta-6-desaturase, which is the rate limiting factor in the enzyme cascade which yields EPA. SDA would be more stable than EPA or DHA. A plant genetically modified with EPA or especially DHA may not have the sufficient antioxidant capacity to limit fat oxidation.

Very interesting talk. Just curious how much fish it takes to make a typical fish oil capsule, and it might be better environmentally and more cost efficient just to eat the right fatty fish a few to several times a week. Of course, there are possible issues perhaps with mercury, etc, though the benefits may outweigh the possible downside. If any knows of a good algae supplement for Omega-3s, please let me know. Want to do my bit for the environment (currently ovo-pescatarian, though seldom eat eggs).

I have ApoE4 so I cannot eat much saturated fat. Can I get most of my calories from eating nuts and seeds instead of olive oil and avocados. I like eating my vegetables with nuts rather than olive oil and I cannot eat more than one avocado a day. Would this be okay or do nuts contain too much omega-6s? Do I just supplement with fish oil and eat oily fish to offset the omega-6s or do I have to restrict the intake of omega-6s as well?
@joantendler6518
2 жыл бұрын
As I understand it, the problem with ApoE4 is that myelin is compromised, which is the connection to Alzheimer's. So, it would make a lot of sense to eat the foods that are used to make myelin. Arachidonic acid is very important for myelin, but omega 3's lower arachidonic acid, so fish oil wouldn't be a good idea. Eat liver, dark chicken meat, egg yolks, goat cheese, and pork. Nuts and seeds are high in linoleic acid, which is a huge problem because that lowers arachidonic acid too, as it displaces it. Other myelin nutrients are choline, B12, cholesterol, lysine (dairy and fish), fat-soluble vit. A, E, K2, and vit. C, B1, B5, B6, zinc, and copper, serine (basic myelin building block), glycine, betaine, folate, and B6. My Mom had Alzheimer's but ate these foods and did amazingly well!

17:40 "The plant based omega-3s are not nearly as potent as the marine omega-3s". But ALA gets converted into EPA and DHA in the human body? Also, couldn't the conversion rate be determined by lifestyle and not merely genetics?
@ongengwai
2 жыл бұрын
Most studies show ALA conversion rate into EPA is less than 20%. Healthy vegans however may have a much lower need of EPA / DHA because their bodies are so much less inflamed to begin with due to powerful anti-inflammatory plants.
@minifix
2 жыл бұрын
@@ongengwai Yes, and further delta-6-saturase will convert ALA more efficiently when you're not eating LA (which competes for the same enzyme). People on a whole plant diet who avoid oils and other fatty foods like animal products will be ingesting high amounts of ALA and far lower levels of LA. Not saying that LA is bad - both are essential - it's just that the ratio is more or less perfect on a whole plant, low fat, high carb diet. Finally, in order to check for healthy levels in the individual it is necessary to test the fatty acid levels in the cell membranes, not merely a regular omega-3 blood test (which will only show whether the food you've eaten in the past few days contained a lot of omega-3). When people on a whole plant low fat diet are tested in this manner, they tend to have exceptionally high omega-3 levels - upwards of 7-8% (the population average tends to be low at around 3,5-4%).
@ongengwai

I think LA has been vilified. Research has shown that high level of serum LA correlates with reduced mortality, whereas high level of AA correlates with increased mortality. One can argue whether LA is a marker of high plants intake. But I never worry about my LA intake. I still would like to work on increasing my omega 3 intake as I have other health condition that causes significant inflammation. And by all accounts omega 3 is a great anti inflammatory (I've pretty much maximised fiber and polyphenol intakes)
@angeloselarja
2 жыл бұрын
Just as with ALA only a small amount of LA gets further converted to the equivalent longer chain fatty acids (Arachidonic acid in this instance). No need to monitor LA intake. The problem with omega 6 oils is that they are often fried (therefore oxidized) and they also contain a small amount of trans fats too in them as they are produced through the manufacturing process of those oils. Whole food sources of omega 6 are not a problem, on the contrary they are amongst the healthiest foods one can eat.

Why don't people like Rhonda advocate for "blue house" farmed salmon/seafood... there is zero contaminants, zero parasites/becteria, zero heavy metals.... They raise the fish in massive tanks that filter the water constantly. The Canadian government has passed legislation for 2025, to make all federally funded aqua culture "blue house" which is a revolutionary land-based option opposed to ocean based. The omega index from these fish aren't the best.. meaning it's got omega 6 possibly based on diet. But it's better than any all other options and most people have omega 6 in their diet already. Even if your getting the omega 6... your getting unoxidized fresh omega 3 without risk of contamination. You can eat this fish RAW like the Japanese do in sushi. America is leading the "blue house" initiative.. I just wish people would recognize it so it's acceptance would grow. This is the food of future times. Everyone please get on board with this!
