I love keto. I am 52, my health was going downhill, and my wife suggested it. I now fast for at least 18 hr every day and do one 48 hr fast per week. My keto regime makes intermittent fasting (IF) effortless. The results from keto + IF are way beyond anything I could have ever imagined: blood, body fat, lean mass. I'm doing body building again (my energy levels are insane). I once again have the physique that I last had as a teenager, and the weight loads I use in my training (resistance, arms, shoulders, chest) keep increasing. It has been the singular most life changing thing that's happened to me, and while it may not appeal to everyone, once you get the results (or similar good results), I can't imagine a different lifestyle. No sugar, no simple carbs, no alcohol and moderate fasting radically changed me, and this (or similar) regime will probably help many, maybe most. Thank you, Dr Westman sir, for your excellent work. The 30% lower risk in diabetes fact was so misleading when we know the risk of diabetes on 0-20g of carbs is extremely low to 0%. I also wonder how many people can actually stick to a plant-based diet - probably a lot less than keto if I have to be honest. Studies are already showing increased depression in those who abstain from red meat, and then you have the B12 requirement that is really annoying to meet - you have to go to your doctor once a month for a shot. This is not easily sustainable for many people.

Stairs could be a big problem too, among many other things. I think Dr. Garth Davis is in a fairly privileged situation where he can just ask a nurse or another doctor at his clinic to give him the B12 shot whereas many people would have to spend 1-2 hours out of their day taking the bus or car to uber to/from the clinic once a month to do this. It's very annoying.

@@Katie-hb8iq Most people following a vegetarian or vegan diet get their B-12 from a cheap supplement (pill or liquid) available at most grocery stores. A select few have a genetic methylation disorder that may require a special form of B-12 delivered by injection. This is not common, however. Consider that Rip Esselstyn, a former professional Ironman competitor, fireman, and winner of several of the arduous Alcatraz Island swims, currently the world record holder in his age category (50s) for the back stroke, has followed a whole food plant-based diet for several decades. There is no fatigue or energy shortage if one is eating enough calories and variety of foods on this lifestyle. It is very nutritious and filling. A number of professional, elite athletes are also switching to this way of eating because it results in high energy and faster recovery of muscles after extreme exertion.

If you don't change what's wrong between the ears that surgery below the neck is not going to do a d*** thing good for you. Years ago my mother had bariatric surgery and ended up becoming diabetic anyway When you have not addressed your sugar addiction and they reduce your stomach down to just a couple ounces you will figure out how to use those couple of ounces for something sweet and convince yourself that it's OK because you're eating less of it. That's what happens To so many people. They slowly begin to gain weight again and They become diabetic anyway because the actual percentage of sugar they're eating In comparison to other healthy foods goes way up. I've seen this in so many people... It's heartbreaking. I probably don't make many friends this way but I always ask " Are you going to mutilate yourself and end up diabetic anyway ? Do yourself a favor and Go deal with the addiction first because a glucose/sugar in a smaller stomach is still way too much sugar." They Do send people to a dietitian pre opre op who gives them a little lecture and a handout About eating healthy which just says Make sure you have a small amount of carbs every time you eat because you're not gonna eat very much. Well that means you have to eat carbs all day long... I wouldn't trust the advice of a dietician or bariatric surgeon for anything.

A big reason keto can fail is indeed severe carb addiction...abstinence is a far better option to become successful and they could succeed on the Carnivore or Lion diets. We don't tell alcoholics or drug addicts to restrict or moderate their habit, but cease it, totally. I am lucky that limiting my net carbs to 20 grams a day is enough for me to stop my carb, sugar addiction, but am becoming very interested in Carnivore
@alicee2952

Carnivore is the way to go imo. Example, yesterday I had Chuck roast and eggs for breakfast around 10:30 AM. I didn’t eat again until 630, a hamburger patty and homemade meatballs. I have energy consistently. I wake up early, I go to bed early. I get so much done throughout the day. I used to eat a lot of carbs years ago and had to eat every couple of hours because I would feel shaky. Highly recommend carnivore diet if you want to feel good. I started keto first in 2017. In 2019 I started going towards ketovore. Last January I did straight up carnivore for six months. I got down to a week that I was in ninth grade. Over the summer, I started my garden and still have a ton of tomato sauce (high in oxalates), zucchini, jalapeños, and pumpkin. Next year, I’m scaling it back. I do have to contend with a husband who loves having a plentiful garden.

A ketogenic diet is a diet of delicious, single ingredient foods that contain little or no carbs. It's easy to stick to... once you're over your carb/sugar addiction! Dr Garth didn't explain why he and some of his patients couldn't stick to keto. Did he really not know? Was he in denial about sugar/carb addiction? Addicts first need to break their addiction. A ketogenic diet helps that, but for many people the support of others is also essential. Living with someone who is still eating sugars and carbs is incredibly difficult for a carb addict. It's like an alcoholic trying to give up while living with people who are drinking on a daily basis. Also, was this plant-based doctor trying to do keto using only plants?? Did he really believe that the quality and amount of protein gained from plants was sufficient to nourish a human body? If plant-based keto was the kind of keto diet he was recommending, it's no wonder people couldn't stick to it.

It's easy for a surgeon to say something doesn't work when he ONLY treats people who have failed every weight loss attempt. He didn't have a legitimate answer that will work for food or sugar addicts. He tried to be blunt like his plan is the clear answer, but if it were 100% correct, his patients wouldn't be needing those surgeries... Like Dr. Westman said, there's more than one way to be healthy, and there aren't studies showing the perfect diet scientifically.

I was excited because my sister was vegetarian, and the doctor was based where we live, so she could have a face-to-face consult if she wanted. Well, I was looking for her recently again to help my sister, and turns out she died of cancer. My sister also died of complications of cancer surgery, so, no, a vegan (or even vegetarian) keto diet is a joke.

Alcoholism can be caused by nutrient deficiencies (I think some of the B vitamins?) as well as by mineral imbalances in the body. Bariatric surgery causes both issues. Also there's the simple matter that the person's food addiction was never addressed in any meaningful way. So they just move their addictive behavior to something else. Not always alcohol. Bariatric surgery patients can go on to be addicted to drugs, gambling, shopping, anything.

I am increasingly annoyed by doctors who speak very negatively about a diet without taking a moment to look into the science. For example, there are countless studies that show that a well-practiced keto diet and vegan diet always have good results. It's actually a shame that this man makes statements like this. This week it was in the dutch news that a vegan had died because she had misapplied her diet. That doesn't mean that a vegan diet should be banned, does it? This woman just needed guidance. Dr. Westman is absolutely right. If the patient has not applied the diet properly, the patient simply needs professional help.

There are MANY people who did a vegan diet “right,” and ended up with all sorts of problems. Many, many carnivores are ex-vegans who ended switching die to illness. So, while I’m not saying it should be banned, it shouldn’t be held in such high regard either. It is not healthy for many who try it.

A well-formulated ketogenic diet isn't a weight-loss diet - it's a weight optimisation diet. It will move your body to its optimal weight. If you feel you are losing too much weight on a ketogenic diet, try increasing the fats in your meals and make sure what you eat is sufficient to fill you up. You definitely shouldn't increase carbs. It's carbs and insulin spikes that damage your kidneys and give you an a1C of 6.9, which is diabetic. To optimise your health and weight, eat lots of fatty meat and if you like veggies, add in some low-carb veggies. No desserts, no fruit, no sweets of any kind. Your a1c will go down and your kidney disease will improve. Your shape will become optimal.

The trouble with 'Blue Zone' diets is that we can't go back in time and reverse the damage done by a diet high in processed carbs.
@CynCopeland-TheAnswerIsMeat
Жыл бұрын
I'm close to rewriting the Blue Zones book - the logic is so very flawed, along with the method. Okinawa, for example, experienced a HUGE shift in their diet during and immediately after the war. The people that are 100 today were born many years before, and had a completely different diet. They also STILL consume good portions of fish and meat. Portion control, whether voluntary or involuntary (wars, famine/lean harvests of meat/food) plays a strong role in overall health. As a first change, getting off all UPF is likely to make a huge impact on people's health.

Yeah. To have a long and healthy life, I think the first few years after birth and even the 9 month before birth play a huge role. So you would want to know what the mother of the 100 year old ate during her pregnancy and make your your future children's mother eats that way. :-)

My doctor has me compensating but I am looking for the why? I have been reading about K1 and K2 and the bioavailability of K2 versus K1. Do you cover this in any of your talks? If you are taking warfarin, you should have had some education about the vitamin K containing foods, and be monitored carefully. If you have changed the vitamin K in the diet, then the medication will need to be adjusted. In some circumstances, like a heart pump, people check their INR every DAY (they have home machines). In your case, with an artificial heart valve, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT to have good INR control, and your doctor may or may not know how often to check it. You might even need to be put in the hospital to get it controlled urgently.

You mention that 800 to 900 calories per day is a super low calorie diet, UNLESS you are a sedentary, post-menopausal woman. Yikes!! I'm in that category. I'm not entirely sedentary because I workout regularly, but I work at home at a desk job, so I sit a lot. Do I need to keep my calories to 900 per day to lose weight? I'm keeping my calories to 1,400 per Myfitnesspal and total carbs to less than 50 per day, which is maybe not prescription strength, but still low carb and allows me nutritious foods like blueberries and no sugar Greek yogurt. Do I need to drop calories even further? I'd rather replace beef with fish, than contemplate a life without blueberries, yes, my fruuuuuut. At a certain point, which is more important, carbs or calories? Thanks in advance.
