Thanks for the great info! I use my aquarium water to water them. When I do my water changes, the water that I remove from the aquarium is very rich in the minerals that they love and has none of the minerals that harm them, like ammonia, fluoride etc. Just nitrate rich fish poop water. They thrive with that water! In fact, I share that water with a couple neighbours that also use it for their plants. Hope you find that tip helpful😎

Rahim Khakee, Thanks for sharing that tip. Great idea! I have done the same with my aquarium water. That would also make a great video. The water is rich in minerals and the fish do a great job of converting things like fluoride, etc., into nutrients for your plants. Sharing with your neighbors is also a really great idea! Thanks for watching. Here's the video on watering with aquarium water: kzitem.info/news/bejne/zKuasK5jcYiAeHY

Hi, the species of my Dracaena has deep maroon/purple color to its leaves. I've had it for about 2 yrs and re-planted it about a year ago to a larger pot. I've been noticing alot of its leaves, (just the tips) are browning? Is this due to over-watering, not enough in-direct/direct sunlight? Help!
@HealthyHouseplants

Thomas G, the browning tips could be from minerals in the water. It can also occur from salts inthe soil. I have videos on both of these topics. kzitem.info/news/bejne/paipz4KuimmQg2k and kzitem.info/news/bejne/mKlm4KWJf2OTo4I

Do you have a recommended soil mixture for dracaenas?
@HealthyHouseplants
4 жыл бұрын
Irene Angela, Thanks for watching. For dracaena, I would recommend a soil mixture that retains water and nutrients, yet is well-draining. One of my favorite mixes is ProMix BX. This soil is water retentive. However, for dracaenas, I would recommend adding additional pumice or perlite for extra drainage. One thing you want to avoid with most houseplants is a barky soil. Many soil mixes look like ground up bark, and they should be avoided. If you go to shop for a mix in the store, you can feel the bag to see how it feels. If it feels like pieces of sticks, etc., it's not a good mix. If it is a fine mix, you will need to add additional drainage agents such as perlite or pumice. Let me know if you have any more questions!

Will moonlight dracaena grow from just the stem if the leaves are pulled off?
@HealthyHouseplants
2 жыл бұрын
Gean Velveteen, you generally need leaves to photosynthesize for growth, although it sometimes is possible to root a stem in water or a rooting mix and spur new growth.

Butler, yes, spraying with isopropyl alcohol (70 or 91%) is a good prevention technique--especially for mealybugs.

Can anyone tell me what that one in the back is called, please! The one in the lime-ish green pot, back left, the one she mentioned that has the swirl, and also picked up and showed while talking about the mealybugs. I think I have that one. I bought it about 3 years ago, as a super beginner, it was just a small cheap plant at the grocery store, that fit my guest bathroom shelf. I planned on it dying, but it just took off, even after really just forgetting about it. I moved a few months ago, and put it in a bright window, and I think I'm burning it, or maybe over watering it... I never got any info about it, because I was new to plants, and expected it to die, but I kind of like it, it's dealt with me even when I didn't want to deal with it, and it's become part of the family. I'm now trying to find out what it is, and it looks just like that one, so I wanted to look it up, and read a little about it, and see if I can figure out what I'm now doing wrong. Can anyone tell me what it's called?

Angela Crouch, All of the plants in the video are dracaenas. The variety you have is Dracaena fragrans 'Lemon Lime.' The care for all dracaenas is the same. They are very easy to grow, as you're seeing, and make great houseplants and members of the family. They don't like very bright light, however. Provide medium light. I would pull it away two to three feet away from the bright window. They also don't like to be overwatered. Have you started watering more since you moved?

My Dracaena (I think it's a dragon plant), is turning white on the leaves by the trunk and then falling off. Is it over watered?? Can I fix it?
@HealthyHouseplants

Cinder, Do you mean white or brown? If they are browning and falling off, it could very well be overwatering. Let the soil dry out to nearly 3 onthe moisture meter before watering. How is the plant doing now?

Peggy Powell, How many brown spots and where is the spotting located? In the middle of the leaf? This could be a leaf spotting disease, or it could be a pest, or it could be that the plant is getting sunburn from a bright window. Where do you have plant placed? And what size is the spotting? Let me know.

@@HealthyHouseplants Thanks for your help. It has 4 brown/rust colored spots (about the size of an eraser on a pencil) in the middle of 4 leaves. Numerous tiny rust colored specks on numerous leaves. One leaf has two lines that formed at the edge and come together in the middles of leaf, and the line is a tan color. Two leaves have split right down the middle of their leaf about an inch long. I had it about two feet from my west facing patio door. I have since moved it to a window that will get bright light but no sun.

I have had a set of Dracena for over a year, decent indoor light, water every two weeks or so, decently large pot. But they just don’t grow.. it’s like a plastic plant, it doesn’t die or loose leaves but it also doesn’t grow or get any bigger.. any thoughts? Thanks!

There are growong seasons, and maybe you should give it some fertilizer every 3 months! I use banana peels for fertilizer.
@HealthyHouseplants
3 жыл бұрын
62amw, Often when this happens it means you have the plant in too large of a pot. You want the plant to be 2/3 of the plant-pot combo. So 2/3 plant to 1/3 pot. If you have the plant in too large of a pot, it will just sit there and not really grow, or worse, eventually succumb to root rot.

Is it ok to trim off damaged foliage? My cats attacked mine....im elevating it now...
@HealthyHouseplants
4 жыл бұрын
Banana Fana, You can prune some, but you don't want to prune off more than 1/3 of the foliage at one time, or the plant can go into shock. If there are leaves that are only partially damaged, you can trim off the damaged parts and leave the rest of the leaves. The plants need leaves to photosynthesize, as photosynthesizing is what gives plants their energy and makes them grow. Here's a video on how much to prune that may also help: kzitem.info/news/bejne/znesuHx6fGSVgXY
