@@captainh3831 Of course! If a dentist wants to cause a lot of pain he doesn't have to stop at the dentin, he has to go into the pulp chamber and then cut the pulp with the affiliated bur, cutting the pulp is the most painful thing the dentist can do

@Theomite I've seen still photos of the actual 'drilling' scene posted online. I know that in the final cut they only zoom into the light, but I wonder if the original scenes are in the deleted scenes sections of the DVD

I have a suspicion that Dustin Hoffman wasn't acting in this scene. That he was truly terrified and his sweating was real.

Laurence Olivier's character was inspired nazi doctor Josef Mengele (The Angel of Death) and the character was nicknamed the White Angel. It is ironic that he would go on to play a nazi-hunter in Boys from Brazil where he was hunting Dr. Josef Mengele played by Gregory Peck.

At 2:52 you can just see the absolute terror in his face as he's forced to keep his mouth open because Karl is blocking his nasal air passage and holding the mouth restraint firm. He just knows he's fucked as that drill gets closer. This scene is brilliant!

I read the book version of this scene and it's too bad the movie leaves out all the grisly details of the torture. They don't show Babe crying or Szell showing Erhart the red nerve of the tooth. It also mentions Szell using a hardware drill instead of a dentist drill, not that it matters if you're not on novocaine!
@Rdhdkid

@VicenteMosin Actually they did shoot footage from a wider angle but the preview audience members started passing out. So they shortened the scenes and zoomed in on the footage they had. That's why the last shot has that weird zoom: they cut in late and optically zoomed in to shorten it for the release.

Wait. How did they force his mouth open? Couldn't he have just spit that thing out? I also like the look of terror he has around 2:49 in this clip. It just shows how fucked he knows he is. What did he really hope to accomplish by jerking forward to avoid Karl? His arms and legs were both strapped down.

I never read the book, but I did see an "infinitely" more cringeworthy version of this scene (on network TV of all places), where the drill is revealed to be underpowered and frequently bogs down in Babe's tooth. You can also tell how hard he is drilling by simply listening to the cadence of the drill's whine...
