Yes, it's safe. It's very safe, it's so safe you wouldn't believe it. The funniest line in the scene.

One of the best exemplars of true acting there is. Olivier is brilliant - reading the same line 7 time sin a row - and each reading conveys a different meaning and level of menace.

A story circulated for a long time that Dustin Hoffman (being a "method actor") stayed up all night to play a character who has stayed up all night. Arriving on the set, Laurence Olivier asked Hoffman why he looked the way he did. Hoffman told him, to which Olivier replied in jest, "Why not try acting? It's much easier." Hoffman repeatedly denied the story, and finally cleared up the matter in 2004. The torture scene was filmed early in the morning, Hoffman was going through a divorce......part1

OK,so it's a little complicated, but basically Szell is a Nazi war criminal,in exile in Paraguay. The old guy who's killed in the car accident at the beginning of the film was Szell's brother,so Szell is forced to come out of hiding to claim his diamonds which he stored in a depositery at a NY bank. He was known as the "Weiss Angel" (White Angel) because of his thick head of white hair, so in a effort to disguise himself, he shaves his head before arriving in New York, but some of his (contd)

When you find out what 'IT' refers to, it does seem like Schell was just being a sadist, since it's unlikely anyone would know enough about what he was up to to know how to respond to the question, or to know how to interpret exactly what context he used the question in even if they knew precisely what his plans were. He should simply have substituted one word in the question and his meaning would have been clearer.
