I just loved how it talked in a largely visual language and through music, I admire it more as an ethereal audio visual experience which focuses on how it tells it's story through colour, framing, motifs, camera angles, symbolism, music and non verbal acting rather than the substance of the story itself. That honestly elevated the film and I think that is why it is admired so much, it's a truly cinematic experience by design with each frame packed with meaning, rather than simply a story being translated through the medium of cinema. You get lost in it instead of merely watching it, and it stays with you afterwards because of that. It's a great work of cinematic craftsmanship.

This film blew me away big time. It was nothing like what I was expecting it to be. At first I was like what is going on say something do something and I thought I knew what was coming a predictable doomed relationship an abusive ex-con husband....cue the drama. but then I started to tune into what was being done with the two main characters and the acting is magnificent. You don't need a lot of dialogue for great actors to do great acting. And I did not see the depth of his psychotic tendencies coming. The elevator scene was really beautiful.....very powerful. And the music at first I thought it was a bit off but then I got it....and the sound...the heightened sound of things happening, and in slow motion it put you right into his shoes and even though he is a total psycho you end up routing for him and caring about him. :O just thrilled by it......and totally surprised. That so very seldom happens anymore with trailers that give away the whole movie and leaves nothing for the audience to discover or be surprised/shocked by. But this film......:) :) :) :) :) :)

3)But his grandiose, though muted, self-stylings (yes, I’m referring to the scorpion jacket and the movie mask) eventually win out. He misses his chance at being both “a real human being and a real hero” (keyword “real”) when his solution to Irene’s husband’s problem is to go on a heist. And the scene in the elevator seals the deal, was his last blown shot. The thing is, though, I think he knew it, thus the goodbye kiss. From then on he just steps off into madness.

Actually, Drive was polarizing. There were a lot of lukewarm responses from critics and moviegoers. As to its quality, I can only say what I liked. A) It was a sad story about a guy with a shot at happiness and normalcy who blows it because he'd rather be a hero and drive off into the sunset. I found it poignant adn heartbreaking, even as I reveled in driver's success at becoming the tragic, nameless hero he always wanted to be.

Drive is influenced clearly by at least six primary films that I could name, including The Driver and Thief, but I feel Refn made an excellent attempt to make Drive its own film, it stands on its own. It is lighter on plot than style or character, but, I think the main "characters" are really L.A. and "Driver." It's more about the latter than anything.
@terratrema
12 жыл бұрын
I must take exception to your assertion that "there is a sense of palusibility to the action". When the action comes in 'Drive', it is of the most OTT and typically Hollywoodish variety. Example: in one scene the mild mannered anti-hero transforms a shower curtain rod into an instrument of bloody death after a split second's thought. This kind of action can be great fun in the movies, but it only exists in the movies 'Drive' was heavily stylized in every department; surely this cannot be denied?

I'm a big fan of Mark's criticism and career, particularly his work on editions of The Exorcist and French Connection, but anyway, you cannot discuss DRIVE without at least mentioning its true prime earlier blueprint inspiration which is Walter Hill's THE DRIVER, as I've recently commented upon here on YTube. As much as, or more so, THIEF, The Driver is clearly one of the main influences on Refn's film, of which I am a huge fan. It should be obvious from the first 10 min. of The Driver (with Ryan O'Neal and Bruce Dern) how much Refn owes to that greatly underrated film, but never in a slavish fashion. I recommend watching both back to back, it'll all make sense once you do. One of the most obvious homages is both "heros" don't carry a gun (at least they initially claim not to!).

This movie was perfect, not a b movie. I will say that it reminded me of a tribute to Sam Peckinpah . The violence looked realistic, the acting was perfect. Drive, is not a fast and furious type of film, which I’m glad for, but more of a what drives a person to go beyond the limits of normality. The music was a perfect narrative to this film. It’s “visually innovating, and the explicit depiction of violence and action”, is what makes this a superhero movie without the spandex, and big budget cgi. The scorpion jacket says it all.

I couldn't agree more about the Quentin Tarantino comment. I think Refn takes inspiration from other films at a thematic level. He's far less focused on referencing other films deliberately. I liked Drive much more than any recent Tarantino film because Refn played the exploitation straight. He didn't draw attention to it with a directorial wink.

2) Because to me the central question is: will he set down his antihero fantasy and just do the right thing, however plain? My favorite shot shows him carrying Irene’s sleeping kid on his shoulder after an outing. Irene is watching from behind in admiration, obviously seeing him as a potential father. Obviously Driver relishes this new type of “hero” role for himself too. He later says it was the best time of his life and he turns down a heist job after meeting her.

@joncross26 It's a simple script and premise, how is that lazy? It's more pure. Yes, that scene with Shannon (Bryan Cranston) is exposition, BUT during that scene Irene and Shannon have nothing else to do while the driver is fixing the car. Plus, he knew the two had a thing going, so it was to serve as fodder for the budding romantic relationship. It needed that artistic direction because of having a minimalist story, and it's all the more memorable for it. It's neo-noir like Collateral.

B) You have to work to figure out what is going on in the character's heads. Gosling's performance works through subtle body language, especially his eyes. He is, I think, a daydreamer with maybe not a lot of emotional intelligence, but part of him wants to connect. I don't think this makes him unsympathetic. C) The visuals are beautiful. The color pallette is amazing. The two leads are gorgeous. The other characters have interesting faces. D) There is a sense of palusibility to the action.

Thanks for the interesting reply. A couple of thoughts: I'm almost certain you're wrong about the polarizing part. I'm sure the film received a few negative responses. But by and large, as far as I can tell, critics and audiences were very pleased. I don't know about "tragic", but "nameless hero" is certainly fitting, in a Clint Eastwood, spaghetti western kinda way. This is a personal opinion, but that kind of character (and movie) to me is supremely uninteresting and also rather reactionary.

I may have been in the wrong sort of mood when I saw Drive but besides the music, which I think was perfect for the film and "A Real Hero" is one of my favourite songs, and a few outstanding scenes where the cinematography, Gosling's mile-long stare, and the soundtrack gelled together for a moment, I found this infuriatingly boring. It reminded me of the moment in Manhunter, where William Petersen dreams of looking at his wife with an ice cream, and we stare into his serious, brooding face for a prolonged time, only it's Ryan Gosling's face and he's staring at us for 100 minutes, and it's made bearable at times by a vibrant soundtrack and iridescent cinematography. Maybe should have been screened in Tate Modern as part of a bigger show.
