I saw one of the touring Batmobiles at an auto show back then too, and one of the touring Bat Boats. As a kid, I thought they were the "real" ones at the time, then I found out that the touring Batmobile(s) and Bat Boat(s) were non functioning, fiberglass and plywood bodied copies made in '66 - '67 just for the touring circuit and other publicity purposes. They weren't the metal-bodied, so-called #1 "star car" that was used for filming the TV show, and even to a kid, that made sense . Why send the real "star car" and boat out on a tour of stupid podunk state fairs and car shows when they were needed at the studio for filming the show, not to mention the risk of accident, vandalism, damage, theft, or whatever to the original(s), when you could just send more easily replaceable, lighter weight copies, and almost no one would know the difference? It was a bit of a bummer when I learned the truth, but as a kid it was still kind of cool to see even the fake ones.

Hubie Kearns, Adam West's stunt double, said he never saw any of the other cars. Only "the piece of sh!t that looked good." He hated driving the car; it was a pig to steer and the steering linkage was prone to snapping at inappropriate moments. The engine was the original that was old, tired, and overheated so much, extra fans were installed in the engine compartment to cool it, which drew more amps than the alternator could handle so the crew was always going to auto parts stores to buy extra car batteries. The engine was replaced during the short time between the 1st season finale and the start of production of the feature film.

The high resale price on vehicles like this is based on the laws of supply and demand. When the baby boomers who loved the original show start to die off, then so will the resale price. Not saying you can eventually buy the car for a dollar, because the fact that it's the original (and created by a legend) will help it retain something over the years, but the crazy numbers will die down as the demand falls off.

The original Futura was a full conopy and it had the Lincoln trunk located AC unit where the ram air intake ducts were aft the doors ( 01:18 in the video ) on the fin as was done on the many lincolns and even a cadillac. That odd rear deck arial with an 8" ring and funny disc in the center of it was a microphone to hear anyone behind you when backing up . The cyclops speedo was the same as in the Edsel's where a horizontal window displayed the speed as a ring rotated with numbers to match the speed . No more searching for that needle to look down when the cyclops was dead center in view . I remember how batman products pushed out the Beatles items while the back to school topics in 1967 were Batman running shoes, towels , haloween costumes and the works. The Monkees became hot too and Beatlemania began to wane as their hair grew and the drug era took over for them . What a cool time with the 65 Mustang , cheaper color TV's , space race, transistor pocket radios , portable 45 rpm Record Players , Phones in a cars , cheap gas and then the 68 big block muscle car Roadrunners, Shelby Mustang , Mercury cyclone and Corvettes .
