Here's one from the "Fun with Fusion" folder.
In the mid 1980s I thought about producing a “Keyboard Colleagues” LP featuring great keyboardists I knew and/or had the pleasure of working with. This included T Lavitz, Chuck Leavell and Roger Powell.
I knew Roger from the early days of ARP. In the spring of 1985 he came over and recorded tracks on a few songs I was working on. “Droid” is a rough demo mix of one of the songs. I printed a SMPTE track and had planned to re-record the drums and bass tracks and to add some additional parts later, but that never happened. In this reference mix I’m playing the synth lines on the left, and Roger is doing the synth “splashes”and soloing on the right.
I was (and still am) very impressed not only by Roger's playing, but by the great sounds he got out of my DX7. He brought only one effects box with him (don’t recall what it was) and used it to produce the dirtiest, most organic, singing lead synth sound I’ve ever heard from a DX7.
There are a few minor flubs on my dummy tracks, but I thought diehard keyboard fusion fans might get a kick from this. If that’s you, enjoy!
Many thanks to Derek Muro for his help in restoring the mix.
