I agree. Yoyoka is like that. It's amazing and unusual. I've seen her play in person. It is even MORE OBVIOUS when you see it for yourself, 1st hand. It is something that struck me about her, how effortless her playing is. It's like the hand of God came down and touched her with his drumsticks, the same way God came down & gave Stravinsky "Le Sacre du Printemps." Stravinsky was so puzzled by his authorship of the work that he claimed he didn't write it, that the hand of God came down and wrote Le Sacre THROUGH Stravinsky. He was merely the mechanism that put the piece down on paper. I am NOT belittling Yoyoka's continued efforts in any way. I know a lot of hard work has gone into her incredible accomplishments. I am only commenting to whole-heartedly AGREE with you, and that this ability is even MORE obvious if you watch her in person and can see in detail how she moves, to the point that it is one of the things I find MOST striking about. Sure, she's a great drummer. The world has many. She's even better at 14. Not so many 14 year olds can play what she does (any? dunno). That she can play what she plays AND the way she plays it is so unusual that I'm sure her fame is inevitable. As near as I can tell, and I do not know EVERY drummer on the planet, she has NO peer. I've looked at a lot of others people have claimed were just "as good" as she is. So far what they've lacked is that effortlessness that defines true greatness.
@chrisegbertky

@salvadormonella8953 there are other drummers, much older and much more skilled, than Yoyoka. And when I watch them I can clearly see what she may become. Just watched an incredible solo by Chris Coleman. Astounding! Much better than anything Yoyoka has so far done. BUT I have every expectation she can get there. She is destined for greatness. And as you say not sure she has a peer at her same age. Excellent musician! BTW Chris Coleman is her favorite drummer.
@salvadormonella8953

@@chrisegbertky Drummers are magic. I haven't watched Chris Coleman specifically, that I know of (I might have, I'll have to pay more attention), but I agree there are drummers that make excellent drummers look like amateurs. Other level drummers. While Yoyoka may not be that next level above the next level drummer now, I've seen her play live, and the effortlessness she displays while playing is remarkable. I've played in bands with drummers. I ran a recording studio with pro drummers cutting tracks there. I've seen drummers, many of them, all of them professionals. NONE of them had the je ne sais quoi this young, diminutive teen has. She makes experienced professional drummers earning lots of money look sloppy, lazy, and robotic. I've seen super good drummers. She is super good. The best in the world? Not today. Tomorrow, or perhaps this weekend. She'll get there, just so long as she doesn't let Hollywood media vampires get to her, or go so boy crazy that the crazy part of that descriptive phrase doesn't overwhelm her talent. I'm crossing my fingers. She's too nice a girl to experience excessive adult-sized pain. The same goes for her family. They're too nice to have their little girl be consumed by the fire of fame. I think everyone around her owes it to her to try and keep her head on her shoulders and her hands on her sticks and her feet on her pedals FIRMLY. With any luck.....we'll see her development for years to come. All drummers are magic and better than most musicians. She's a special kind of magic.

I've definitely enjoyed her foray into fusion / jazz - because it is expanding her vocabulary. In her excellent work with Ken Okada, her fills were expectedly mostly rock style. I detected alot of the same influences in her drums solos... But as she is rehearsing / playing / performing new (to her) styles, she's adding new vocabulary to the muscle memory... Fantastic... Watching Yoyoka continue to impress even more is just an amazing thing. Great stuff. As for this track, it is difficult not to get lost in Billy Sheehan's bass playing (who has collabed with Yoyoka when she was 10). I mean - getting to play with the dude who absolutely crushed it on Elephant Gun in '86... whoa... :)

Fantastic reaction, Andy! As mentioned below, this was shot in a rented space in LA. Her dad Aki was not totally happy with the mix as they couldn't bring all the recording gear; however, as you said, it is still amazing. Another fun note on this cover: if you look carefully in the foot cam you can see someone sitting on the floor grooving along (I suspect her brother Shido). It seems every she puts out now is next-level, and as others have mentioned, her gigs at Whiskey A GoGo are no rehearsal, no sound check, and in most cases, playing with others for the first time. Nothing phases her! From her recent gig on Tuesday Sept 26 2023: "Tuesday was @ultimatejamnight at @thewhiskyagogo ! I jammed "You Cloud Be Mine" by @gunsnroses and "Forty Six &2 " by @toolmusic . These were the first songs I had ever tried. Of course, no rehearsal, no sound check. It was very tense, but fun! Personally, I had a lot to reflect on, but I am proud to have been able to play with this great group of musicians. I was especially honored to finally play with @chuckwrightbass , who I have always wanted to play with! He was still a cool bass player. We will definitely play together again! Thanks also to @marikawaguchi7 for always supporting me! I would love to play at the next @ultimatejamnight again. Thank you to the staff, co-stars, and audience! And happy birthday to @halsparks ! Hope to be able to JAM with you next time!"

Like some said... Pat Torpey was the original drummer. Died from Parkinson Desease in 2018. Before Mr. Big, he played for Impelliteri and for Robert Plant's solo band. He was probably the best "pocket/groove" drummer of all the Hard Rock drummers from the late 80s - early 90s era. But he could also be extremely technical when needed to be. But he never overplayed on a song. On top of that, he was a really good singer too. That song is the opening track from Mr. Big's 3rd album "Bump Ahead". Released in 1993. Mr. Big became worldwide famous for their acoustic ballad "To Be With You", but every single one of their albums have these technical demanding songs in them. They have the perfect balance between technical proficiency and melodic accesibility on their records.

This is a Mr. Big cover. Yoyoka did some remote jams with Billy Sheehan, the bass player for this band, back when she was 10. Billy Sheehan and the guitarist Paul Gilbert are kind of high-profile old-school shredders, but cooler. Why do I keep watching reaction videos? I'm not addicted, or anything like that, at least I don't think I am. THAT SAID, Andrew's capacity to be blissfully unaware of massive swaths of musical content & genre's is truly impressive. I mean, I don't live in Europe, but I know who Beethoven is. Andrew hears some random tune by some ginormous U.S.-based rock band and suddenly it's like "the U.S. what?" Is that a nearby island? I never heard of this obscure music. Who is this "Rage Against The Machine? Is it a skin infection? Does soothing ointment help? No, probably not." "Rush? I've never heard of this 'Canada" of which you speak. Is it near Auckland?" "Rush is just one more four-letter word. Best to not say it in public or polite society, or the kids'll add it to their ever-expending profanity vocabulary." "Of course I can drum in 9/5 time signature, but these new-fangled "radio" contraptions can only be figured out by kids, & I'm an ADULT!" P.S. Yes, she's based in "The States" these days, if by "The States" you mean "The United States of America." I've met your twice now. She's quite an oustanding young woman! Watching her play in person is surreal because whatever she is playing appears to be effortless for her, regardless of how complex the piece is, regardless of the venue, other musicians, etc. She acts, and drums, like a consummate professional, comfortable with herself and her abilities.

@@wayne7725 Thanks for the note. My comment was meant as gentle, good-natured "ribbing," as we call it here in the U.S. (also known as "heckling" in other parts of the world. I'm not sure if they speak English in NZ, so I'm not sure what I should say here.) I didn't have any ready bands to tease Andrew about, so I just pulled RATM out of my, how do you foreigners call it, "arse?" I like Andrew a lot, and trust he's more than man enough to "take the joke." He's a drummer, so he's way more man than most, and certainly more than pitiful me, writing comments instead of making videos. Most of the videos of Andrew's I've seen where he didn't know the source material were for bands out of England I think, which makes Andrew's behavior even more puzzling, because I thought NZ was a former British penal colony and sheep penitentiary. Despite his huge list of character flaws, I still love the guy. I have a soft spot in my heart for those lesser capable people. Cheers.

Yesterday i watched her do What Is Hip by Tower of Power. So apparently she can play jazz as well which is pretty complicated. She made it look easy. Super impressive if you have a chance to watch it.

Our drumming sensation continues to shine and I can gladly say that her and her family now reside in our United States! And Andrew DO NOT feel bad about not knowing the band or the cover. I probably have a few years on you age wise and quite proud to say that I am a long time 'rocker' myself all starting with my childhood in Detroit, Michigan and living just down the street from the original Motown Records. I, too, have never heard of this group and sure as h*** have never heard this song! WOW! What a cover! Yoyoka? Keep 'em coming my dear! The warmest of greetings to you Andrew from balmy Las Vegas, Nevada...WOW!

I learned about limb independence from El Estapario and you, Andrew. I believe Yoyoka is a great example of this.

Just saw Yoyoka and 3 other kids cover The Ocean by Led Zep on IG (great!), came over to YT and there's this! Wow she's incredible! Speaking of female drummers Rooney...Pau from The Warning won Modern Drummer's 2023 Reader's Poll for Up and Coming Drummer! Pretty cool. Now please pass me some of those non-sponsoring Doritos Brand Tortilla Chips from the fine folks at Frito-Lay, a wholly-owned subsidiary of PepsiCo Inc. 🔼🔺️⚠️🥤😁

Pat Torpey was an amazing drummer. You have to be, if you're gonna play with Billy Sheehan and Paul Gilbert. Theres a pretty good video of MR. Big live at Budokan in like 08/09 they do this song with a lot of footage taken from behind the kit if I remember right of Pat playing this

Hello Andrew. I have 2 suggestions of new Yoyoka drum covers you may react to. Fall out Boy- We didnt start the fire. And Steely Dan- Home at last. I am a big fan of Yoyoka, and your reactions.
