The best way to process dry gravel is with a dry washer, also known as an air jig or dry blower. The dry washer allows for the processing of gravels at a much faster rate than possible by winnowing or dry panning, and is far more efficient at collecting the gold. The dry washer is basically designed to be a short, water less sluice, where pulsations of air coming up through a porous cloth medium take the place of flowing water. The vibrations and flow of air replace the function of water in the normal sluice, allowing the gold to settle downward and be caught. They are small enough to be moved around by a lone prospector, inexpensive, and easy to use, but as with all dry placer methods, a large percentage of very fine gold is lost. The dry washer does not recover gold quite as well as a wet process like the trommel or power sluice, but in many locations there is simply no water available to run a trommel, and in those areas a dry washer can be an excellent choice.
