Voxels in games did not start with Minecraft, that's so obviously not correct. Worms 3D and Mayhem were already using smoothed voxels and I don't doubt there were probably games much earlier than that trying it out.

Dev diaries are something I think every game studio really should do, it's helpful and doesn't leave the player uncertain of development progress and really builds up hype.

Don't get your hopes up for this, these devs will probably also overpromise. Also they seem money hungry as they're planning a monthly subscription for this game.

+RCmies Though it's possible you'd be right in the end, I fail to see where you're getting that impression. It's good to be cautious and skeptical, especially in this age of scummy money-grabbing behavior. But I think it's unfair to hold such a cynical view, it's good to have a little faith, too.

I gotta feel bad for these guys making this game in a post no mans sky world. Everyone is gonna be super skeptical and not even wanna go near this until after it launches and only if they deliver on what they're promising.

There have been many games released that have done parts of what No Man's Sky promised. The issue seemed to be that the indie company spent all of their budget on marketing instead of working on the actual game. Soooo many games have given us post-minecraft Voxel tech. MachineCraft... Trove... etc. It was entirely the customer's fault for falling for the No Man Sky hype. Be skeptic, but don't be stupid.

Toa Onua I would agree with you but No Mans Sky used some very tricky tactics with it's marketing. I find it hard to blame a consumer for buying a game based off of gameplay they showed. A lot of what they showed in their demo's wasn't in the final product. That's not even mentioning all the shit they they said was in the game that didn't make it in. I know for a fact it's possible to make a what No Man's Sky promised. Elite Dangerous( A game thats been out for over a year) Has a lot of what NMS promised in it. Virtually limitless space to explore, dynamic npcs and systems that run the the galaxy, the ability to side with and fight for different factions, different ways to play other than mining, Planets actually orbiting stars that you can travel to, etc. Given more time in development I'm sure NMS could have delivered what was promised but it was clearly rushed out.

It's a shame that people is talking about voxels in 2016 when Novalogic made the best FPS game of all the time in 1998 using voxels.
@drunkzealot

I'm not sure you understand what voxels are. Novalogic was using sprites not actual geometry.

Comanche from Novalogic indeed used voxel graphics to render the landscape and it looked phenomenal back then in actually 1992. Sprites where used for objects.

What dual contouring algoritm are you using to extract the iso surface? Dual Contouring of Hermite Data by ju et al. ? And is that why the game is called dual universe?

Both are games that take place in the vastness of space, both use voxels, one is crafting and building based, the other is combat and resource gathering based. Compared.

It became every ones convo the moment you wrote in a public forum. And yes it does use voxels, you can look it up yourself " Planets are rendered using voxels with procedurally-generated textures while flora, fauna, and other surface features use polygon-based rendering...." from the wiki article on its development process.

These are voxels actually. Go read up on what voxels are before you try to correct him, voxels are just 3d volume measuring elements, not cubes like in Minecraft.

Animation Space yes but actual voxel graphics aren't made by polygons! This voxels here and minecraft are made of polygons
