I volunteered at the finish line and my buddy and I helped Salazar into the medical area. RIP coach Squires from my hometown.

Hasn't been a comment here since 2014....I just found it and brings back memories for me. I ran the race of my life that day finishing 19th in 2:18. Have wanted to write a book about where the top 20 are now 35 years after!

I ran in this race unofficially-as my first marathon while in college. I had run in the snow in the weeks before the race, and then in the heat in the week before. It was so hot that day. I had overtrained. And I dropped out at mile 21. A bus took me to the finish-stopping to let runners off for medical treatment on the way. I saw Alberto Salazar at the end being iced and taken care of. It was an amazing day!

This Boston Marathon was my finest Boston in the 20 Boston's I have run. 2:38:02 for 414th place. (PR 2:33:16) It was an honor to run this Boston in what became the "Duel in the Sun". What an outstanding race.

Dick Beardsley said that the motorcycles didn't have anything to do with the fact that he came in second. He is really a great guy who is not searching for excuses.

I go to Wayzata in Minnesota where Dick went to school. He talked to us before a race and told us how there was only 18 guys on his Xc team, now there is hundreds. That man is so inspiring, everything he went through, and where he is today. He is the most inspiring person i have ever gotten to meet.

I love watching this and I've read the book "Duel In The Sun", this is as good as sports gets. The determination that both Beardsley and Salazar gives here is absolutely inspiring. After this race, Beardsley would succumb to prescription drug abuse, and Salazar who didn't drink water enough during the race would have his body paying for it for the rest of his life.

I ran this race as unofficial "bandit" runner, starting at the very back. Greatest 3 1/2 hours of my life! It's taken me 32 years to say it -- "Congrats Alberto!." I encourage everyone to stay in shape and, if you like, running, keep going. I was in an accident that rendered me crippled. Wonderful memories, though!

Just heard Beardsley interviewed on a runner's academy podcast. The first marathon he ran was the Paavo Nurmi Marathon in Hurley Wisconsin in 1977. That marathon goes past my house, and I was probably on the street cheering when he ran by. Means so much more to me now that after 45 years, I have discovered running and hope to complete the Paavo myself this summer.

Whether they affected the race or not it was definitely overkill. I counted 7 motorcycles with them on Hereford St. World leaders have less of an escort in a motorcade. I suppose they are there to keep spectators from interfering but may have actually interfered themselves.

what a race. always heard about this race, that was dramatic to watch. Beardsley did give everything he had, Salazar was just too strong. The motorcycles really were annoying, it almost seemed like they blocked Beardsley on one turn. Why were that many necessary anyways? Didn't they have barriers setup to keep the crowd out?
@seebyseebs

I dont know about that haha Alberto is the one getting carried around while Dick is walking around unassisted. Dick also went for a run the next day and because Alberto didn't drink nearly enough water during the race he had to recieve special treatment after the race. I'm not tryin to be a ass... just providing some background info. which i learned from the book "Duel in the Sun"

Salazar had just run 27:29 a week before Ina great race in Eugene against Henry Rono. Never was the same runner again. Over racing has ruined many a career. Needed to drink more water durning race. Then refused to run through misters in L.A. In 1984 Oly. Wasn't the smartest racer just ran with such guts.
