Soak your strawberries in 3 cups water and 1cup white vinegar for 10 minutes, then rinse. This will make your strawberries last longer and they do not taste vinegary at all.

Oh yes! Mainly produce. I donated quite a bit to our community fridge. Found a box of organic eggs with only one badly cracked egg. 2 bags of organic apples. Bags of mandarins (1 or 2 in each bag went bad). I composted the bad items, as we have a composting service's pickup container in our building's alley. A few canned goods were also salvaged.

Oh, I don't consider produce perishables. I was mainly talking about the dressings and cheeses in the salads and then the meats of course. I just don't take all the produce because I either don't like it/won't use it right now, or am already stocked up at home

@@DumpsterCamMost people can eat cheese until it gets moldy. Cheese can get rubbery and the oils can come to the surface long before it turns moldy. Many of the cold cuts are good even if they get a little warm if eaten quickly. In terms of getting a little warm, old school the recommended refrigerator temperature was 50, then 45, and now 40 degrees. Some hard sausages are shipped and sold at room temperature. Others, especially slices are often refrigerated hpbut im not sure they have to. - Imagine what happens to food when it is taken out of a case and until it gets back to temp in the home fridge. Likewise, think of all those meat and cheese trays which sit out on buffet tables with no refrigeration. At the same time, some of these products may sit in your warm car for upto some time before getting into a fridge. The tray pack type meats - In general they have a different smell and with chicken look as they turn rancid; paynsoecial attention to the fat. Any fluids on the meat gets sticky too. Consider bringing some of this meat home when you've got time to watch and smell it. Take it out of the package and put it on the counter in some sort of sealed container; you've got cats. Then look, smell,,amd feel it every couple of hours as it turns bad. Once it is bad enought it can't be denied, you will know what smells and feels you are looking for. These are the smells, color changes, and fluids feel you are looking for at a lesser degree.

Maybe they all look the same maybe not, but "Home" dumpster looks like my city. If yours starts with M, and ends with a crap load of potholes. 😆 I get so nervous about coming to get food, especially when truck comes. Any tips on that, I'm new here. Typed in " Michigan 2023 Dumpster Diving" You're the lucky gold star. Pretty laid back, soothing voice. Thank you for doing this. So many viewers such as myself, am fairly new at desperate mode. And I don't want people to question me, or try to stop me from getting "food"
@DumpsterCam
Жыл бұрын
Potholes yes! But the city doesn't start with M. I'm in the metro Detroit area though, are you near there? Welcome to my channel! 😁 I've been diving for over 6 years and I still get nervous. Out of all those years, there have only been a handful of times that I've been approached by someone, but trust me, it's the last thing I want lol. I go as fast as I can, typically when the stores are closed, especially when I first started. I never dive when the delivery trucks are there. I definitely get anxious, and you will never see me doing a long dive, especially not jumping in and digging around when the store is open, not sure how other divers do it 😆 It's the initial fear that you really have to overcome, even if you don't have the guts to take anything yet, just do a quick walk up and peak in, build up from there. My parents don't like to dumpster dive anymore, but when I first started, they would be with me just as support and to drive the "getaway car" haha, it definitely helped ease some nerves if you have anyone to go with you. Now I go alone and try to work quickly. Goodluck!

@@DumpsterCam I imagine that has to be scary, yeah I'm over by Pier Marquette area. Hello, I subbed you I could use the inspiration again. I dove for the first time a few months ago, and there was a homeless person that really gave me bad Vibes. Kinda ruined it for a while, because they were going to jump me. 😕 Thankfully when I go, I bring my husband, he finds a deeper love for free stuff, "rebel bandits" what we call each other when we went out. There was 1 time he went when truck was there, we didn't know what to do. But my closing case was to say if we got caught. "I'm beyond poor, I have proof to show it. There's no trespassing signs,and I won't be making a mess. Simply getting dinner, i dont steal in stores this is trash from a dumpster and I'll be on my way! So cool you responded so fast to, I hope you have a Blessed day!

@@GracefulGrattitudes Oh no! That would definitely scare and deter me too. I have never ran into any sketchy people that I remember. I don't actually live in Detroit, just in the Metro area, about 30 minutes away, so nothing scary :). As for truck drivers, I don't think they would care at all because I don't think they work for the actual store location, I just don't like running into people. But if an employee tells me to leave I definitely will (but have no problem coming back later lol). I'm sorry you had a bad experience, but hope you can get your mojo back! Thank you, same to you 😁

I am watching and wondering if you are diving to save good food from going to the landfill and sharing with those who don't have enough to eat or are you only diving for your household? because you left good bread in that dumpster that someone else would probably be happy to get. you didn't take the tomatoes because you said you don't like tomatoes.

Correct, I currently dive for myself, and if there are surplus non perishables that can be donated. Items that are past their sell by date cannot be donated, neither can perishable items. Unfortunately this bread and other items wouldn't be accepted by food banks. If food banks knew food came from the dumpster, regardless of if it is past date or not, they also wouldn't accept it. I'm comfortable with eating dumpster food, but many people, regardless or economic status aren't. Unfortunately I do not have any friends or family willing to eat food from the dumpster, however my area has many many other dumpster divers who also take what they can use.

I just can't take everything unfortunately, I dive nearly every day and live alone, so there's no way I'd be able to utilize it all before it goes bad. I take what I know I will be able to use and leave the rest for potential other divers
