Growing up in the New York City area, we were lucky to have Bill Mazer. He did a daily Sunday show called Sports Extra which appeared on WNEW Channel 5, now a Fox owned station. If I am not wrong, it was one of the first late Sunday night sports show at the time.

yeah but it's only through the passage of time that Duran was able to fight Barkley; til he got to 160. The point I was making with Hearns was: he was also a welter at that certain point & time in which Duran ventured into that division to fight Leonard. Roberto had no chance vs Tommy beyond 147, too much of a disadvantage with height & reach. But I do agree the Duran of 29 @ 147 was a formidable challenge to even the greatest welters of history.

Totally agree, and I'll go even farther and say the Duran Barkley fought would've done the same.

Mostly agree, but Tommy couldn't have beten Roberto on the night he beat Barkley, for the first time in years Duran looked like Duran. He even stated that he wanted to fight either Leonard or Hearns after that. Barkley was basically the same size as Tommy, the difference is Tommy couldn't have taken the shots Iran did from Duran.

And Lee Leonard was a good friend of mine and my senior head couldn't pull his name together. Last I knew he had a cable show in New Jersey that was very popular. Thanks John.

people forget that the Duran of 135 was the real deal! if he had never moved up in weight? he'd of ruled his division for a tremendously long time. On the other hand I'm incredibly happy he moved up because it further cemented his greatness. To the non-discerning viewer & so called analyst, if he had never moved up to beat the likes of Leonard, Palomino, Barkley, Cuevas & Moore? he'd of been just another good little man who was never really challenged? But not Roberto!

Duran was big 4 a lightweight and probably would of beaten Hearns at that weight' maybe even would of knocked him out' but at 154 lbs' Tommy was just to big and fast 4 him.

Duran is definitely not at his best in this fight. Even though, he still controls it with ease.Sounds like Dr. Ferdie Pacheco doing the commentating.

Duran lost almost 100 lbs. just prior to the Hearns fight. Tommy never lost a fight at 154, it was his best weight. Duran had just fought Hagler at 160, then ballooned up and then dropped to 154 for a big payday with Hearns. Bad timing, Duran would've give Tommy hell at 147. Plus Roberto went 15 with Hagler, beat a prime Ray Leonard and beat Barkley, Tommy was great but can't say any of that.

good point but Tommy had all the advantages beyond 147; from age to larger wing-span & frame to carry the extra weight. But your right his feat at age 37 was nothing short of incredible!

Floyd would never have the class and skills of Duran. It's an insult to even put these two fighters in the same category.
