Little Roy is a great guy to talk with . Totally approachable and very friendly . His guitar style with the thumb and finger picks needs to be seriously studied . His back-up playing is the fastest most effective guitar strumming I have ever heard . He is a machine and the volume and precision he gets is stunning . His banjo picking is legendary as well , He has been friends with Earl Scruggs since the early seventies . If you get a chance to see Little Roy and Lizzy don't miss it you won't be disappointed .

Earl played guitar with a thumb pick and and two fingers actually his banjo picks and Lester Flatt played with a thumb pick and a banjo pick on his index finger. Sonny Osborne once got Lester to back him up on rhythm and sonny said Earl Scruggs must be the luckiest banjo player in the world to have somebody backing him up like Lester because Lester was so precise. That’s not to take anything away from Leroy he is a musician’s musician in his own right. If you don’t have them already buy you the 10 volume DVD’s of the Flatt and Scruggs Martha White show and it shows more of what a I’m talking about.

Man Earl could still pick that Banjo it’s amazing. The girl on the fiddle was great. It sure was nice to see Earl still picking even as he aged. I am from Sw Michigan but I always liked all kinds of Music. The thing I like about Earl Scruggs is he was not afraid to stray from Mountain Music, Bluegrass ,Country and folk. He would experiment putting the sound of the banjo into all types of music. It was unique and sounded amazing. The man was a musical genius.

This is one of the great things about bluegrass, they get the youngins' up there with a living legend. It's about getting the next gen ready to take over.

he's always wore his pants that way due to a car wreck they had back in the day, ended up with a broken hip that changed his stature and posture somewhat, plus he's not a large tall fellow anyway, but he is my banjo hero, there is no other. i can tell his picking in any crowd of banjo pickers.

earl scruggs is 2 years younger than my mom. She turned 88 this year, 2010. He looks a lot more active than her, and plays the banjo better too LOL. Of course, my mom likes the six fat dutchmen for dancing, but she don't do that anymore either.
