First and second-grade students at Earle Brown Elementary have a good reason to get excited about recess. That's because two Brooklyn Center police officers took time out of their shift and joined them on the playground.
Officers Steve Holt and Cody Turner don't have any children of their own, but on this day you might say they've got a couple hundred.
"It makes me feel really good that they're secure enough to come up and talk and want to interact with us and kind of get to know us," said Holt.
Every Tuesday, several Brooklyn Center officers take a break from crime fighting to be out on the playground. The effort started this school year as a way for Brooklyn Center police to expand their community outreach. It worked out because Earle Brown Elementary was also in need of extra supervision during recess.
"It's really fun to play with them," said first-grader Adela Law. "They have fun games that we can play."
School administrators say the unique bonding experience is working.
"It's been very positive, students are excited about being able to play with adults and just hang out with them," said Earle Brown Principal Callie Lalugba.
The children show their appreciation by drawing pictures for the police. Officers say they are also grateful for the opportunity.
"It's to let them know that we are invested in the community that we ultimately serve and protect," said Holt.
