One of the best things parents can do for younguns is give em a speck of land to grow their own food in. I was three years old when I got my first speck of land, and it was all tomatoes!!! Didn't want anything else at three years old. But it's a great life lessons experience for them, it teaches patience, troubleshooting, and the value of a meal on the table. And I remember being so proud every time daddy told somebody I growed the tomatoes they were eating. Tomato sandwich anybody??? ;-)

My husband grew up on their family farm. When he was a kid he remembers setting mole traps with his great grandmother. No one lives out there anymore, but we still hunt there. She had those things eradicated, but in the last 10 years (she’s been gone 15) they have definitely come back. So, I guess you just have to learn to manage them so they don’t take over. It may be a good idea to just keep a few traps set. My boys LOVE to trap. I bet Jacob wouldn’t mind checking them 😉

Castor oil pellets work for voles or you can buy castor oil (make sure it hasn't had the smell and taste removed) and mix 1 tablespoon to one gallon water and a squirt of Dawn then spray everything really well. It won't kill them, it just runs them out of an area by changing the smell and taste of their food source (your plants). You will need to reapply after it rains.

I’m down here in South Alabama an hour from the coast. Had a vole problem for years. Mainly they will eat my seeds before they come up in spring. This year I planted a row of squash, went in to rest a bit. Came back out to do another row and vole had already dug 2 hills. I just plant enough for them too. They are aggravating for sure. Always eat on my taters. I pour a handful of fertilizer down their hole when i find them 😅 Also, I leave garlic in spots to come back every year. I divide and plant them in other spots. Like you say, bulbs don’t get as big though.

Great update! Thank you! Darn voles! Yup, using 1/2 inch hardware cloth works in the bottom of raised beds to keep the varments out. I heard that sticking juicy fruit gum in the holes attracts them and gums up their stomachs. There may be some grubs or something in the compost that is attracting them. I battled voles in Florida and never had any for years until the last couple of years. Always something new. Keep on keeping on. It's going to be a great growing season ahead.

I'm convinced you all have green thumbs!!😘 Everything you've planted looks to be thriving. Once your fruit orchard gets a little more established, you will have apples, pears, peaches, and cherries galore plus berries!!!! Hey, did you know there's a new fruit tree in nurseries called a "fruit cocktail tree"?! They have grafted peaches, plums, cherries, and nectarines onto one tree trunk somehow. I'm curious how it will really grow and produce. If you google "fruit cocktail tree", you will find nurseries that sell them. Was watching a KZitem weather channel and it sounds like starting next Sunday or Monday there will be a severe cold front all across the eastern US. According to that, TN and NC will have lows in the 30s. Sure do pray none of the crops people have planted gets frostbite. Boy, your azalea bushes are gorgeous in full bloom!!!❤ I enjoyed the walk around to see all your different flower and veg beds!!! Iris are one of my favorite flowers too. Marigolds and cosmos are my most favorite as they last all summer and into frost.

Such a pleasure to watch you share your garden (or permaculture zones 1-2 😉) after a recent video about your story popped up in my feed yesterday. Beautiful farm you have this side of ‘that’ mountain. 💚 I’m in the UK. We have what’s called “the June drop” when a tree naturally shed the fruits it doesn’t want to allow to swell. If still overloaded after the drop, I go through and thin out. I’m sure you have the June, or maybe earlier, drop too. It’s the time mothers learn not to place a baby under the shade of a fruit tree during picnics or afternoon naps. 😅 Anyway, it always intrigued me how trees were designed to choose which and how many fruits it wanted to drop. God Bless you, your family and 🇺🇸.

Get some castor bean seed or if you can find the plants at a nursery plant one at each end of your beds or garden spot. Just make sure you put a little fence or something around it so your animals don’t eat it. And tell the kids not to touch it because it’s toxic. But I promise it works for moles and voles.
