After leaving a sloppy outflow boundary near Amarillo and driving south toward our initial target - the caprock near Lubbock, Texas - a storm initiated on a differential heating boundary with no competition to its south. This tail end storm moved slowly over open terrain, producing large hail and a couple of tornadoes, including one very photogenic elephant trunk that we documented from start to finish as it crept within a mile of our position without having to move. After the tornadoes, the storm took on crazy structure, revealing its full internal anatomy from our position to its west as it was lit by the sunset.
