On the 28th of September 2018, Palu was hit by a strong, 7.5 magnitude, earthquake. The earthquake itself caused extensive destruction in many parts of Palu and Donggala cities and smaller nearby villages. As a result of the earthquake shaking liquefaction occurred on parts of the coastline of Palu bay as well as in some large areas inland. Two minutes after the earthquake the coastline, already lowered in many places by coseismic subsidence, was also hit by a large tsunami reaching more than 6 meters in places. Nearly two months on, large parts of Palu city are back to functioning. But the extensive damage will take years to clear up and tens of thousands of people still don't have homes.
