@@goldenhivemead It's also unnecessary for most homebrewers. Unless you're maintaining a yeast bank, or something like that, you don't need to sterilize anything. Sanitizing is fine, after proper cleaning (and most use the non-caustic PBW) for that. But you can sterilize certain equipment. You need an autoclave, which can cost thousands of $$$. That, or buy what I call a PMA, or poor mans autoclave, also known as a pressure cooker with a 15 lb stone on top (so water boils at two atmospheres absolute, for 121° C). Be careful, though, not all plastics and glass can tolerate that. I've forgotten the type(s?) of plastic, but for glass (beakers, Erlenmeyer flasks, slant tubes, vials, etc, look for borosilicate glass. If you seriously want to maintain a yeast bank, check out Cynmar Scientific. I got all of my stuff from them, back about 15--20 years ago when I had about 150 strains of brewing yeasts, with a master slant and at least one working slant for each. You'll be creating slants using a nichrome loop to take a few cells off to either make a new slant for a 10ml starter (next in a 25ml Erlenmeyer flask, then 100ml, then 250ml and if your batch size calls for it, 450ml in a 500ml flask). This obviously means you'll start stepping up your yeast about five days to a week (oxygenating with pure O2 and an oxygenization stone).

Your basic mead recipe calls for 2.5 oz of yeast but in all your videos it looks like your pouring the whole packet in, I'm 36 hours in and I'm not seeing a ton of bubbles yet and I'm worried I don't have enough yeast. Any advice?

Hello :) There are a couple factors that I have found impact yeast build up. Luck (sometimes you get a bad pack), Nutrient (yeast need to grow in a healthy environment), time (this is one of those hobbies that it might take 2 days before getting results). Patience was my biggest thing. I don't know the kit but if he gave a pack of yeast and you used it all I think you should be good.

This feels like more of a "very general overview" anyways, it would be a great idea to invest 10 or 15 minutes in watching a thorough guide, and always read the label on your sanitizer of choice.

Either just use what soaps they had available and give things the best rinse they could, or, simply not sanitize. Sanitizing is of course ideal, but under the right circumstances, or with the right practices, it seems the yeast can outcompete with the bacteria during fermentation, particularly in a sealed off environment. It risks a chance of failure should the yeast be beat, but when done right the alcohol _can_ sanitize itself.
