Downpayment assistance is available everywhere in East Chicago. The criteria is merely that you are buying or building a house, and you attend a HUD class as part of the program. You are then eligible for between $10,000 and $30,000 downpayment assistance as a forgivable loan. And home prices run from about $35,000 up to maybe $200,000. Expect to pay $75,000 for a decent existing 3br brick home. Also the South Shore Train take you right to Michigan Ave in downtown Chicago.

I'm from EC. My family was well-known back in the day, but so many have passed away and moved, it's not many actually living there anymore. It's gotten better looking than when I was visiting every summer in the 80s and 90s. The neighborhood I grew up in was demolished in 1995. The Brickyard was amazing to me lol. I still talk to my childhood bff that I have known all my life from The Brickyard. This was a nice tour of the city. You actually drove by a few of my relatives houses lol.

@@wardaledillard8553 it really was! My grandparents house was decorated with the most updated appliances and cabinets in the kitchen, the bathroom was remodeled (although I missed that deep claw footed bathtub lol) and we had AC throughout the house. Everyone always said they had the best house in the neighborhood, and I'd have to agree. Gran made sure her house was spotless and well decorated. We painted outside yearly. It was a part of the summer chores. Inside was every other year. It was because of living surrounded by different chemical plants/plants in general that the house was always dusty. To me even now there's almost like a film that gets on you and your clothes from whatever's in the air in EC from the mills and plants there. But we said she "chased dust" and before it settled on the furniture, she was wiping it off...or had us wiping it off! 🤣🤣🤣 But everyone knew that you could come to The Robinson's house at any time and it was gonna be spotless. Even when all the grandkids were there, you could literally eat off her kitchen floors because they were mopped at least 2x every day. More than that during holidays when more people were there. I loved playing in the alley. We rode bikes around Ganister Court and the alley, racing to see who was the fastest. Or who could beat Gayle's dog Bruno who was never chained up and would chase you away from riding in front of their house. I almost had to run him over to keep him from biting me several times. Mrs. Norwood had the most beautiful yard with the prettiest flowers you could imagine. I can see all the colors in my head now. And of course you can't forget Yolanda and Jimmy getting drunk and arguing about the stupidest things on the weekends while they BBQ 'd late at night. They lived in the 1st house coming down Kennedy Ave from New Addition going towards Chicago Ave. Since my grandparents was the 3rd house from the same corner, we had a front row seat to all the shenanigans LMMFAO!!! And it was a show indeed!🤣🤣🤣 The Brickyard was our personal playground as kids. I miss the people who made the neighborhood like a big family. I keep in touch with many of them. We need to have a Brickyard reunion like they do New Addition or Calumet Day every year. I'd love to see those who are still here again. ♥️♥️♥️

East Chicago, Indiana, the greatest city on earth.

East Chicago is known as the TWIN CITY, and it is called this, because the city consists of not just the Harbor north side (seen in this film clip), but the south side at the four corners, Chicago & Indianapolis streets. And then there is Roxanne section further down Indianapolis. This film only shots 1.2 of the city. Yes, there are a lot of Hispanics in the city, but there is an African American as its mayor! Do a Part 2 on this, would be nice and truthful.

Nice to see EC trying to improve. Seems really quite on the streets. Love the old brick homes that has withstood the test of time. Came there in 2006 to care for my mom but I didn't see any major improvements at the time considering the casinos, which had been there for decades, were suppose help bring in jobs and improve the city overall condition. I was there for 3.5 years and was glad to leave. Yeah, I drove into Chicago frequently while there but I now live in the South. In my city alone there's two entertainment districts, Six Flaggs, Wet n Wild, professional baseball stadium, multiple well designed parks for children and adults; even dogs parks, library with planned activities for children and adults, senior recreational centers etc. THIS is what those casinos should have done to revive the area...no where close to what should have done. Sorry but my heart still breaks as I watch this. The improvements are like putting a bandaid on gushing wound when corruption remains. Wishing you all the best. What happened to this region reminds me of the movie Lion King when Scar destroyed the pride which eventually destroys the entire region.

I grew up in EC. I have walked all of those streets many times. I have great love in my heart for my hometown. That being said, the world has changed. The area has been in decline for many years. Crime is a problem. Economic opportunity is limited. If you are a young person, get out! I did.

Grew up in EC all my childhood. The best thing I ever did was leave there. If you like getting robbed, cars broken into, your kids getting harrassed and threatened by thugs and gangbangers in school, by all means buy a home there or rent like the majority of people there.

Some of your information is wrong . Those apt buildings on Guthrie are being tore down all of them . No one living in them . Their are more than two parks. East Chicago is a community of peoples . Those aren't condos just regular apt . Yes l did live their for many years and grew up their. You miss a whole lot.
