Cns180784. Hi as long as the line is wet that is one of the things you should aim for. However when line is spooled it comes of a big drum and so should be wound on your spool in the same way. In the video my spooling device has 2 bits of pipe insulation so the spool doesn’t overrun which can be a problem. To attach to my spool I tie a loop in the end and then make a half hitch or lasso around the spool making sure the knot is at the bottom of the spool. An arbour knot is fine but make sure it is at the bottom and and leave a tag end so that you can lay the line over it . One of the reasons I like Drennan reels is that they have a small depression in the spool for your knot to sit in. It’s all about getting an even line lay on the spool. I hope this has helped. I will be doing a video on how to load deeper/larger spools correctly as this is an area people seem to struggle to get right. Tight Lines.

Thanks for your reply. I too have always loaded new line with spools orientated per your instructions ( I --- ) Rather than ( I I ) when told I'd been doing it wrong for all them years! So if it's good enough for you, it is me. Thanks

Tony Napoli Hi Tony the kitchen sink works if you support the spool upright and turning otherwise line twist occurs. Try it you will be suprised. Tight Lines

A very clever idea Bill, and unlike my Wife, it doesn't keep complaining that putting pressure on the Spool hurts her fingers!

Great Bill, Ideal timing as I’ve just got a new Daiwa reel that needs loading. Off to the DIY shop for the bolt, nut and washer to build the contraption.I only hope they’ve got the insulation for the line holder sandwich !!

From the video it shows the line coming up from the bottom up rather than over the top . Does it matter which way the line runs off the spool?

BUSHCRAPPING . Hi mono should be wet when you load it on the reel.1 wet mono lays much better on the spool 2 prevents burning 3 because mono absorbs water if you are loading from a bulk Spool you can fill the reel to exactly the right level, usually 2-3mm from the lip 4 mono is more supple when wet. It just works better than loading it dry, try it for your self. Some manufactures recommend soaking the line for up 24hrs before loading .

Can it work soaking the line 24 hours before loading and then not having to load it on the spool whilst it still being submerged in water? when i loaded my reel a few months ago i have had problems with the line looping off and have come close to tangles so looks like this is the remedy, really good video. I plan to use something like a bucket for spooling my line on my reel and i'm looking at buying a new reel on Friday with three spools of line to spool that as well as another reel that i have which has very old line on which i shouldnt use now. Cheers for this great informative video, all i will add is that i couldnt see what you did when tying the line on your spool but thats not a problem for me because i know how to anyway with an Arbor knot. Do you have the drag set to max or just so high like a few clicks from max? also i'm curious about how you tied the line on your spool because as i said i couldnt see all of what you did. The second loop you made was is just line you doubled over, for which you didnt actually tie a loop knot for, with that loop then going over your spool? sorry if i'm asking a lot but i really need to nail this. Its just i see myself struggling when tying on these spools over the weekend and i do sometimes struggle with the Arbor knot i think how you did it looks simpler.

Love your videos and great little device. Two questions though. In other advisories they say to wet and wind the new line onto your spool with the new spool of line facing your reel spool (face to face) ensuring the unloading spool is peeling off in the same direction as you are loading to avoid twisting. And that is logical. Q.1 Is that the optimal way to load new line and reduce twist? Q.2 You did say..."comes off a big drum and so should be wound on your spool in the same way". Unless that is what you were referring to in my above example?

quackchung. Hi well I used to do it with the spool facing my reel but no matter what way the spool faced I got some line twist. Then when working in a plastics factory years ago I watched the extruded pipe being wound on a big drum and started winding line the same way end of problem. Later on a major manufacture stated this was the right way to wind line on as well so I have carried on doing it this way. Mono also absorbs water and most makers/ distributors will tell you to load the line wet . My simple spooling device just makes it easier. Incidentally braid should be treated the same way and wetted before the first cast to avoid tangles. Tight Lines

quackchung the articles advising to spool line that way are wrong. We want our line untwisted when off the spool, twisted when on (by the rotation of the rotor). We must take our line of the manufactures reel untwisted...that is straight of. Taking it off one end would result in line twist, which could, it taken from the correct end counteract any reel twist and so leave the line untwisted on the reels spool (so in that respect the articles are correct) , but then it would be twisted when we cast out!

DepakoteMeister . Hi all I can say is that this way of line loading is now recommended by major manufactures. I have been doing this for several years and it works perfectly. The only thing I would add is that it is better to soak the line overnight, but most of us don’t . Monofilament absorbs water, which a lot of people don’t realise. Try my way for yourself and you WILL be pleased. Tight Lines

Easy Fishing I'm agreeing with you! It's the only way I've ever wound spools, because that is how a fixed spool reel works. No idea who started this 'line off one end of the spool' nonsense that has been widely repeated.

Hello Bill, hope your well mate, couple of questions,is that a cut down 2 litre milk bottle and is the pipe insulation 15 mm or 22 mm or doesn't it matter? Nothing to do with fishing but just had to tell you that your wooden table and chairs leaning up against the fence is exactly the same as mine,(bought from B&Q),had it for years and still looks good, anyway take care Bill.

Richard Aldridge hi thanks for asking not well and not fishing! First time I’ve missed the start of the season! Yes it was a cut down 2 ltr milk container. The insulation was a small bore piping type I don’t know the bore diameter. Hope this helps Tight Lines
