I know Bill is not with us anymore, but i have just now stumbled upon this video and i love the idea of the hooklengh extenders! In his honor im going to use it and name it the Bill Allen rig on the box. May he rest in peace, a big inspiration

A lot of modern end tackle is a solution looking for a problem. Yes, there are situations like feeder fishing over deep weed, which require booms, suspended arms, helicopter rigs and whatnot, but I'm of the opinion if you can simplify, do it. So long as your rig doesn't tangle in mid-cast, and it registers bites, you're good.

another great video bill, i did alright this summer on method feeders but apart from that i mainly float fish and lure fish, i am going to have to learn the art of ledgering better.

thanks bill but i like to float fish for grayling, its the pinnacle of fishing for me small stick float on a beautiful natural stream and as a general rule i dont like to ledger for fish likely to be under a lb. iv found that by feeding and fishing maggots then switching to a worm will pick off the bigger grayling. i am hoping to get better at ledgering for bigger fish like carp, larger chub and barbel.

BUSHCRAPPING . Lucky man no grayling in my area but i do love trotting the stick for roach dace and chub but the major rivers in my area don’t respond to this so I practice on the small streams and tributaries

I see so those two rubber beads that are about 4 inches up from where you have your twizzled loop prevent the line from twisting further up when you twist the line to make it. I do have these rubber beads but i dont like using them as they cant be reused once you've taken them off the line so i'd use shots or stotz and see how that goes. When you mention that you dont use the bulkier plastic connectors (like the Drennan method connectors) what do you mean by them being clumsy?
@easyfishing1936

cns180784 Hi those beads are not for preventing twists moving up the line. The bead above the sliding link is to stop some floating debris from fouling the hook when on the river. It also means you can semi fix the link when fish are picking up the bait and bolting. The two beads below the sliding link make the twisted loop kick of at an angle when you pull them down to the knot at the top of the twisted boom and act as a shock absorber. The reason I don’t use the bigger Drennan method connector or tulip beads at the end of the boom is that they can cause the line to flip back on itself on the cast causing tangles. I think that either using a loop to loop connection or a micro or mini snap link(Drennan or crallusso) is much better Tight Lines

I see i did wonder what effect these Drennan method connectors would have on my hook link, i thought that they could prevent tangles rather than cause them on top of being quick and easy to connect mainline and hook length but i think i'll avoid them now and just use them for fishing the method/banjo/pellet feeder. So how do you prevent the line from twisting further up the line when making this twizzled loop? or is it unavoidable and theres' a way to straighten the line out?

Another great instructional Bill - well done fella. I am not much more than a beginner, but one question I always have is that whilst I get that your rigs here are flexible and versatile (which is great), can you say *when* or *why* you would change hooklengths/feeder sizes, i.e. in what circumstances? So I understand that with your rigs here you *can* change feeders for, say, a smaller one, but *why* would you? When would you decide to extend your hooklength from a few inches to a few feet? I'm not trying to catch you out, it's a genuine question and I find it hard to get an answer from the vids I watch on here. You may say it's all down to experience, and I get that, but I'd be grateful if you could give maybe a few pointers in a masterclass-type thing that doesn't need anything more than the tackle and rigs that you explain in all your videos, but says more about how to use them and when to change from one thing to another, and for what reason. Anyway, keep well mate, I'm enjoying your work.

Andy Smitj . Hi Andy, look to use a bigger feeder to introduce more bait,alternatively cast more often. Change to a heavier feeder if the wind increases and you can’t reach your original distance. Use a cage feeder if you want the bait to leave the feeder quicker. A solid plastic feeder if you want your feeder to empty when it reaches the bottom ie in deeper water say over 9ft deep. Change the length either shorter if your getting damaged baits without seeing the bite. Longer if the fish don’t want to go nearer the feeder or for a slower fall of the bait if you are using a dry mix a good tip is to try floating maggots on the hook. This is a huge subject to answer!!

Andy Smitj .Hi try a smaller feeder to put in less bait or as in my video when the fish were spooked by the feeder going in. A lead will be useful sometimes as in a link ledger but you can attach a bomb instead if you want. It’s all down to the day and experimenting to see how the fish want it!
