The DFPlayer Mini is a great addition to your model railroad for inexpensive sound fx. In this video I show you how I connected this unit to an Arduino Uno and an IR sensor to actuate the sound fx and then turn them off in my sketch. The instructions provided in the DFROBOT Wiki page for this device may seem overwhelming, but actually it's a pretty simple process to get the module to work to your satisfaction.
The DFPlayer Mini can be purchased for under $3 US. The Micro SD Card needed to hold the MP3 files will cost you more than the unit itself. I searched for some small SD cards, 2 GB or less and was surprised these cards are more expensive than the 8 or 16 GB Micro SD Cards. For sound fx on your model railroad, even 2 GB's would be overkill for space!
In a previous Q&A I gave an answer to Will Kling that I need to update at this time since I found some additional information on the issue. The DFPlayer Mini is a great board for creating sound fx on your model railroad at a very inexpensive cost. The need for an additional amplifier as on other SD Card readers is not required for this module. It produces great sound as is!
