This man hits the bulls eye! I have been vegan since 2011 and was never able to get my optimal weight. Until I found the starch based diet, I realized I was drenching my food by sautéing, frying or putting on the salad, not to mention the loads of seeds and nuts ( they are healthy but high in calorie density). I completed changed my diet with delicious recipes. Believe me, there is no other diet to look further. This is the one, a starch based one, no salt, no oil, no sugar! 👏

I was 6 foot tall 215 pounds (I was 140 pounds in high school). Asthma, Arthritis, hay fever, diverticulitis, hemorrhoids, internal and external. I was exhausted all the time, everything hurt and I just didn't feel good. I lost 50 pounds (at 166 pounds my weight stabilized) All those Illnesses went away, I have energy all day long, and I feel 10 years younger. God bless John and Mary McDougall!! You saved my life.

Thank you so much, doctor! It's a blessing to be thought by you. I would have a question, if I may: if starch is our natural food, if we are STARCHARIANS... :) why aren't we able to digest it raw, as horses and caws (roots) or like birds (grains)? Is boiling natural? I mean, did the evolution allow us to thrive on starch under the condition of the termic treatment? That would be an unique case...

We've had fire long enough to develop adaptation to cooked starch. But also, true sweet potatoes (NOT YAMS) can be eaten raw.

Maybe someone can help me here. I have noticed that there are very smart people advocating a low carb way of eating and also very smart people who support a high carb way of eating. Also, both camps can provide testimonials that demonstrate improved health markers for those who eat either way. This has caused me to ask whether there are things both have in common. I believe there are things in common and maybe those things are the real reason that positive results occur under both regimens. What I think both have in common is elimination or reduction in sugar intake in both camps and a change in the type of fat people eat. In the low carb camp, people usually will change from the new seed based oils to using saturated fats from animal sources. In the high carb camp, people will usually change from seed based oils to saturated fats from plant sources such as coconut oil, palm oil , etc. So reducing or eliminating sugar intake can have a dramatic impact on insulin production. Also, changing from the seed oils means a reduction of linolineic acid ( aka omega 6 fats) , I wonder if these two changes in diet can be the bigger reason health improves in both groups?

The only diet that has actually proven reversal in many chronic diseases is a whole food plant based diet- meaning, the elimination of processed foods including oils, sugar (with all of it's different names) and flour. Eating plant based foods only shows a reduction in inflammation markers, reduction in cholesterol, BP, Fasting Glucose etc. Oils (a processed food and an extraction of pure fat from a whole food source) just like sugar is a concentration stripped of the fiber, water and other nutrients found in the whole food. Eliminate both animal products (high in fat- no fiber-promotes inflammation) and sugar (elevates glucose-no fiber- promotes inflammation) and fill your plate instead with a variety of whole plant foods and you will experience health like never before!

For me, the no oil, no sugar, no salt, unprocessed vegan whole foods plant based diet is the ONLY diet that ended my food cravings and lets me lose weight effortlessly. I was 299 at the start of March and now 263. A miracle for me. Also, my cancer doctor said McDougal is my best chance at keeping the uterine cancer gone. Thank God I found McDougal's free diet! I make Mexican, Indian foods, etc. So much variety. Good for my budget too. On a low carb diet, I got sick and the cravings were insanely terrible. I lost control of poop because of lack of fiber. A most humiliating new experience. Lost 15 pounds on low carb diet and then lost control and ate back 25! Plus low carb was very expensive. So for me it is McDougal for the win. Effortless weight loss of 2 pounds per week now. In a year that will be 104 pounds that will melt off. I don't feel as if I'm on a diet either.

Yes, but what we are discovering is that initially avoiding those foods which cause a reaction while eating other whole plant, minimally process foods for a period of time, often leads to a re-introduction of the initially problematic foods which become no longer problematic! Often the sensitivities are created as a result of many factors (bad food choices, highly refined/processed foods, medications, environmental factors etc) and once the gut biome is reset through a whole food plant based approach- these sensitivities are resolved.

Diagnosed with Stage 4 MBC, I’ve been doing this diet but not changes in my blood work yet and fro 130 down to 110.... the oncologist is not so much for a nutritional diet to lose weight. Can I use this diet but keep my weight up?

Hello Jacki, We're sorry to hear of your diagnosis- but great job working with whole plant foods to compliment your treatment. Ensure you're getting sufficient calories (which can be a challenge on a WFPB diet as the portions can be relatively huge!) For you, getting more whole plant fats like avocado, raw nuts/seeds and olives can help sustain your needs. You may want to find a WFPB nutritionist to help guide specific caloric requirements for your BMI and treatment plan- but would also consider (if you are an appropriate candidate and are interested) a WFPB fasting mimicking plan around your chemo treatments- Dr. Valter Longo at USC - valterlongo.com/cancer-for-doctors/
