It may sound like a stretch to call Aswan Egypt’s best-kept secret, but while easily recognized because of the eponymous dam, the city itself has largely been undersold in the lineup of destinations pitched to foreign visitors.
My stay here has been phenomenal, at a guesthouse (the Nuba Dool) on Elephantine Island, smack in the middle of the Nile just a short (and cheap) ferry ride across from Aswan’s center. My innkeepers, like most everyone else on the island, are among the large contingent of ethnic Nubians to be found in Aswan and Egypt’s southernmost region, which historically was Nubia prior to its conquest.
Aswan is a stepping off place for those cruising the Nile between here and Luxor, and its airport welcomes tourists from Cairo to visit the nearby ruins of Philae and the temples at Abu Simbel 3 ½ hours to the south by vehicle. But as this video illustrates, Aswan itself is a relaxing, colorful city well worth the time spent to get here and stay put for a while.
