Few antiquities sites on Earth are better known than the ancient Egyptian pyramids at Giza, along with the adjacent Sphinx, about a dozen miles southwest of Cairo.
For anyone visiting Egypt it’s a rite of passage to make the trek to Giza to see the pyramidal burial chambers (whether or not you choose to go inside) of three pharaohs dating to 2,500 BC. Most people arrive as part of a tour (buses and minivans mostly) and, indeed, it’s one of those places where going on your own is almost always the lesser option.
My visit from my downtown Cairo guesthouse was booked through a tour company and I expected to be part of a small group. Somehow (and to my delight) it turned out to be a private tour with a driver and my guide, the latter a scholarly gentleman and veteran of more than four decades showing people around Giza who made my experience even more special, as I think you can tell from the video.
